You should never use any machine at the gym. Free weights ftw

2013-09-26 01:26:38 PM
Pfft.  Machines!?  I only lift free weights, my own body weight, or the bodies of taut, preteen Swedish boys.

I love how I actually started reading that article.  Like I might have some use for that info one day.

This is such old news. Stick to the big three for main lifts, do variations of these three for primary assistance, dumbells and/or bodyweight for secondary, then use machines as tertiary auxiliary exercises for your high rep sets at the end of a workout.

A title for a guy who is trying to get his workout plans advertised.

"Loaded Standing Calf Raise"

If I have to stand the whole time that I'm raising a calf, you can bet I'll be loaded.

2013-09-26 01:32:52 PM
Yup. You can get a lot done with dumbells and 60-80lbs of plates.
Isolate pretty much any muscle group.
And the pushups thing. Try that every third day for 6 weeks.
Granted, you'll be "that guy" with the big upper body and chicken legs, but hey! Skinny jeans are in!

Free weights are useless. I just crank up local gravity to 3 or 4 times normal for an hour, and I can feel the burn all over.

Plus, now I can jump like a grasshopper.

This.  Goblet squats are great for teaching proper form, make it way easier to go ATG than barbell squats, and don't require a spotter.

Also, list fails without Smith machine.

I am cool with that, but they shouldn;t be recommended before regular squats.

This guy is peddling light weight crap to women who think light weight, high reps will "sculpt" their body, which is BS.

MsStatement: This. Goblet squats are great for teaching proper form, make it way easier to go ATG than barbell squats, and don't require a spotter.

If you don' thave the form you should have somebody else there teaching you, so regardless of spotter requirement you still need another person.

If you have a cage you don't need a spotter.

Does it make it easier to go ATG "correctly"? I can get lower without heavy weight on my back, but that is because I have to round my back. I could probably keep it straight with goblets because the weight is forward of my shoulders, but that doesn't adress the lack of hip flexibility that limits me during real squats. Going to the depth where your flexibility limits with heavy weight is better imho.

Try This Instead: Single-Leg Squat.

i'm sorry, but if you are using the hip abductor at the gym, there is zero chance you can do a single-leg squat.  I am talking full range of motion for a good rep - meeting all the required points of performance.  This is an advanced exercise.

You can "go heavy" with goblet squats, just use a 100+lb barbell.  Most chicks can't do more than 135lbs on regular squats anyhow.

Regular squats are good too but whatever.

Since groups of Farkers are regularly confused for Fireman Calendar Photo Shoots, maybe one of you can help me.

A couple years ago I slipped on the ice and overextended my elbow (worst pain of my life btw), 6 months later I was in a low speed motorcycle crash and went down on the same elbow. So my elbow is farked, it hurts a little bit every day and makes gross popping and tendony noises when I extend it.

I need a couple good chest exercises. I'm terrified that one day I'll be doing bench and my elbow will explode and I'll drop the bar on my neck.

Maaaaaaybe a split squat.  But probably very doubtful, even if they "can do like 600 on leg press bro"

Goblet squats are good for group training if you have a bunch of dumbells and not many barbells. That's about it. The mechanics are too different from back squats for them to be used to teach back squats, and the loading is severely limited. You could use a "heavy" dumbell but barbell front squats, ssb squats, or backswiats are all much better options for strength.

First, bench in the power rack with the pins set just below your chest height.  If you drop the bar you can escape with just a slightly sore chest or nothing bad at all.  Second, if you can use a swiss bar (neutral grip) which might take some stress off the elbow for bench.  You could also try reverse grip but I doubt this will help the elbow and definitely don't try this without the safety bars in a rack.  Weighted pushups, dumbbell press varieties might also be better.  Also play with your grip.  A wider grip is gonna hit your chest more and your triceps less and probably stress the elbow less.  You should use less weight.

Use linament and try those little trigger rollers.  Stretch lots.  Try elbow sleeves.  I have knee sleeves and my lifting buddy swears by both.

Good grief.  Plain ol' squats are good too, like I said I guess the author just wanted to mix it up a bit, seeing as how most people who exercise don't do anything even resembling a squat getting them to do some goblet squats is far better for them than doing some lame arm bends.

I wasn't advocating in favor of the Smith machine, I think it's an injury waiting to happen.  Only thing it should be used for is as the bar in an inverted row.

I don't disagree that barbell back squats are valuable, but the increased range of motion in a goblet (front or zercher squat too) can increase hip flexibility and improve a back squat, and they won't wreck your back.

Big Merl: Whatever, who uses the dry side of the gym? Us cool kids are in the pool.

Because I'm tired of having to deal with all the farktards doing fly and breast while sharing a lane. And getting directly into the lane and scaring the shiat out of me when I almost run into them, instead of dangling their legs in the water first. And hogging up a whole lane by just sitting there and clucking at each other without doing any work. And the 450lb waterwalkers who take up a whole lane just by being tremendously fat. And how three lane lap swim is interrupted constantly for the manatee class, kid swim lessons, and whatever other stupid class. AND the pool being closed constantly for no particular reason for the past month. If some farkhead drowned, I can just move their bloated corpse out of my lane with a noodle, it's all good.

Seriously though, I'll probably be in the pool in four hours and 26 minutes. Assuming it isn't closed AGAIN.
