Walmart is a fascinating psychological experiment. How much misery will people put up with to save $0.09.

Oh look, the Christmas crap has finally showed up so early NO ONE can stand it. Before Thanksgiving was bad enough, but before Halloween? that's just stupid - and gets in the way of the Halloween stuff. About damn time stores started to feel the pain pre-pre-pre-pre-Christmas causes the rest of us.

Jesus Christ, your birthday isn't for another three months!

/and the stuff's already been out at least a week around here

If only there were some way for a multi-billion dollar company to attract and retain quality workers that are reliable and like their jobs.

/Off to Costco this afternoon

Twenty-two checkout lanes and three clerks working.
That is all.

I bet that they've also got hundreds, if not  thousands, of trailers packed with merchandise and are shuttling them back and forth from one distribution center to another. That way they can show it on paper as "in transit" and not inventory "on hand."

I used to hit Wal Mart for three things:  paper towels, toilet paper, and water.

They can't manage to keep those on the shelves, so I quit going.  I just get it from Safeway.  It might be more expensive, but no more than making a wasted trip to another store just to find they don't have the shiat you want.

buzzcut73: I hope that one day in my lifetime Wal-Mart will be one more addition to the list of once mighty retailers like Woolworths, TG&Y, K-Mart, Sears...all were the big boy for a while, all went down a similar path that Wal-Mart seems to be trying to follow now.

You'd think the MBA's would learn at some point.

They do, but the keep being replaced with cheaper newer ones that know everything fresh out of school.

THIS.  Fark, it's not that much less expensive.  I get the bonus of not feeling like I need to take a shower after shopping at my local stores too.

when I was a teen they built a wal-mart a couple of miles down the street from us. it was close enough to bike there which we did. I remember when it opened, people were happy, the stores were clean and well stocked, and surprisingly a lot of the merchandise was made in America (or at least claimed to be). I still have a couple of kitchen and household items that I bought there that have lasted 20+ years.

that said, I stopped going there about oh I dunno 8 years ago when I realized that the quality of their merchandise was crap and was getting worse. sorry, but replacing an item every 6 months to a year that should last 5 times longer than that (or longer) is crap. fark you wal-mart and your shiatty Chinese crap.

/finding out later on how poorly they treated their employees was just another reason to never shop there.
//went back to the one that was by my old house a few years ago out of curiosity and was shocked by the condition of the store - filthy store, empty shelves, and employees who were on the verge of killing themselves.
///worst company in america.

Basically "ordered" my wife not to shop at WalMart anymore - basically told her I didnt care for their business practices and she should go to the Target which is both closer and 100x less disgusting.  Wally world was just a habit for her - one that was easily broken.

Muta: FTA: the company has forfeited some sales because it doesn't have enough workers in stores to keep shelves adequately stocked.

So why not let the workers they have work an additional 5 hours a week to stock the shelves?  Nope, can't do that!  Can't have anyone working more than 29.5 hours a week.  Walmart management decided that it is better to cut off their nose to spite their face.

Their response will be to fire current employees when profits dip.

"Merchandise has been piling up because consumers have been spending less freely than Wal-Mart projected, and the company has forfeited some sales because it doesn't have enough workers in stores to keep shelves adequately stocked."

If only there was a solution to this problem.... I know, let's order less stuff!  BRILLIANT!

/one or two more minions per store might solve the bare shelves thing, and or one or two more distribution trucks and drivers per region but no, let's not just not hire any one, let's force our suppliers to scale back their staffing too...
