Former President George H.W. Bush was an official witness at the same-sex wedding of two longtime friends

So, no surprise. Don't let this fool anyone for a second. Wealthy right wingers aren't necessarily socially conservative at heart. If their rich buddies are gay or whatever that's fine, but if its politically convenient to mobilize the marching morons against vulnerable minorities, they'll still do so. This is still the rich, ruthless old man who ran the CIA, helped Reagan spread murder and rape through Central America for a decade or so, and appointed Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.

fusillade762: his wife, Laura Bush, and their daughter Barbara Bush support gay marriage, as does his former vice president, Dick Cheney, whose daughter Mary Cheney is openly gay.

So... not 100% evil, then?

Keep in mind, none of them were interested in doing anything about it when they were in the White House for eight years.

You have a very loose acquaintance with history. GHWB was actually a very good president. And he's been a great former prez. I wish there were more of his ilk in today's GOP.

No, he was NOT a good president. He got us into the stupid Iraq mess, which was a major event that helped cause 9/11. Kuwait was NOT our problem, we should have left it the fark alone.

He was also a huge part of the cause of the current surveillance state, or are you forgetting that he's a former CIA director?

I'll give you that he's a decent former president. But his presidency was worse than Reagan's, and Reagan was the worst president in our country's history until W came along.

Pure self-interest. He's playing the slippery slope so he can marry his man-sized safe.

A Dick that shoots old men in the face shouldn't be entirely unexpected at a gay wedding.

Not the Bushes I expected, but not a total surprise.

To be fair, the Bushes are surprisingly good friends with the Clintons, and Bush Sr. was always more of a fiscal conservative than a social conservative. I expect that on this issue he is more liberal than Obama and possibly his children.

Even back in the Nixon days, there were some conservatives, like the Mitchells, who had gay friends. This is normal in the upper and governing classes.

No doubt, as America and belatedly, the GOP, adjusts to the new normal, people like the Bushes will come to the fore and official homophobia will be relegated to Tea Partyists and Christian Jihadis.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, as John Kerry would say.

Washington may get pretty vicious when it breaks down into the old game of skins versus shirts, but after the game is over, people have to shake hands and to have dinner with each other.

From The Garden Party

The rich arrived in pairs
And also in Rolls Royces
They talked of their affairs
In loud and strident voices.

The husbands and the wives
Of this select society
Enjoy independent lives
Of Infinite variety.

Hilaire Belloc

Belloc was a Roman Catholic and with C.K. Chesterton formed the romantic conservative counter-weight to people like H.G. Wells and George B. Shaw. As his children's voice shows, he had a sense of humour and a touch of cynicism or realism despite being profoundly religious and like many Roman Catholics, hopelessly idealizing the Middle Ages and the Medieval Church. (As opposed to the medievalist Umberto Eco, who more sensibly points out that the Middle Ages have never ended, so everything conservatives hate about modern society was already prominent in the 1300s or earlier. See The Name of the Rose for a masterful analysis of how medieval theology translates into modern politics and vice versa. Being Italian and a medievalist, Eco is sort of a J.R. Tolkien when it comes to understanding how the fantasy fits into the reality and vice versa.)

I love the Biblical and apocalyptic ending of this poem:

They married and gave in marriage
(And some of them kept a carriage)
And the Flood destroyed them all!

Recommended reading: All the children's poetry of Hilaire Belloc. Optional: everything else.

Hilaire Belloc fondly thinks
Nobody minds
His work being all
Of different kinds.

nah it's simple really. their political lives are over. no need to spout party lines for votes anymore.

And they always seem to come to their senses AFTER they're out of office and don't have to worry about the consequences. Same issue with politicians who, after they leave office, say they're in favor of decriminalizing drug use and scaling back the War on Drugs. Would be farking nice if you all would say something when you might actually affect policy, assholes!

proving once again that politcians sacrifice their own values and tread on people's rights just to get into office. If these former "leaders" had any moral compass, they would start a campaign aimed at changing the conservative base's position on gay marriage.

CheatCommando: ginandbacon: I have a lot of respect for him.

Possibly the last true statesman to hold the office. I didn't agree with a lot of his policies, and yes he probably did some really nasty shiat while running the CIA, but man since then it has been a bunch of five year olds screaming at each other.

Then again the reason he lost reelection was that very same group of five year olds refused to come out and vote for him and then were shocked when Slick Willie won.

I completely agree with you. The GOP has really gone batshiat since him. I would say though that part of why he wasn't reelected is that he didn't know how to handle the media and and got burned at the stake by them. It's a shame. Not that I regret Clinton's years in office (but fark him for caving to the "welfare reform" crowd) it's just that he has a decent man and did a decent job and I miss his kind.

Now his wife??? Oh lordee I could write buckets about how awful she is. I hold her responsible for her son. She is just toxic. And those pearl necklaces? Uh uh girl. No.

He was good at foreign policy, being on first name basis with most heads of state from his previous jobs of VP and CIA Head. Didn't put ideology over economics entirely. But he didn't do much for anyone with a job, like most in his party.

I would not have thought this was possible 25 years ago (the Bushes witnessing their friends gay marriage) when he was President. Also the Bushes are a stark contrast to the craziness of the Tea Party Republicans and their opposition to gay marriage, who claim to believe in freedom and limited government but want government to control who you may love and marry.
