Will they be shooting the show in Battle Creek?

Of course not. It'll be filed in Toronto for cost. Michigan is basically Southern Canada anyway.

I really don't understand what goes on in these creative meetings when showrunners or whoever say, "You know what would be awesome? You know what TV viewers really need right now? Another cop show! Yeah! Brilliant!" And even worse, the fact that someone else greenlights it.

Then again, if anyone can make a cop show in this day and age still have meaning and excitement, it would be VG.

Well it's either cops, doctors or lawyers and Gilligan already has a lawyer show in the works. Except that lawyer show I might actually watch.

This will be the true test of whether Gilligan's a genius or just got lucky.  If he can make the barren hellhole that is Battle Creek interesting, it's clearly the former.

Stupid to make another cop drama. What we need now is a courtroom drama, with a lawyer that doesn't play by the rules, but he's the best at what he does. And the DA is his ex wife, they could have great biting banter that's slightly out of order but there is still something flirty there even though she's now engaged to a promising young politician.

Then there is a wise old judge that formerly worked with his father who is now deceased. The judge could give him advice each episode and let him know when he's not living up to his father, but in the end he thinks his dad would be proud if he could only see him now.

I've lived in Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, Kansas City, Lansing MI and now Grand Rapids. Battle Creek is the only city I lived in where I was held up at gun point, suffered break ins, and actually feared for my safety. Seems like a solid choice of setting. Talk about a cesspool

What's funny is that this show was pitched to CBS back in 2002 and they passed on it. After Breaking Bad though, all Vince has to do is walk into a room ramble off a few sentences and every executive is going shutupandtakemymoney

I'm hoping they could actually film in Battle Creek as well. It's a farking hell hole and could use the boost in the economy.

....and I wouldn't mind going to see a shoot or two as well since I live pretty damn close and the last entertainment shoot I got to see was Dark Knight in Chicago.

Am I close?

I'm just not quite sure how that will work long term. I could see maybe a season without Batman, but I'm not sure how you sustain seasons of it just being a cop show with non-super powered criminals. Take away the fantastical elements and Gotham is just another big city with crime problems.

Actually most of the cop shows now are about cop consultants, not cops. Castle, Psych, Hannibal, The Mentalist, Elementary, they're all cop consultants that are smarter than the cops. I guess everyone hates cops and the TV people are reacting to that.

I read another article that said Gotham will also focus on the villains that made Gotham famous. Even then, you have police corruption, a good detective against it, crime, the mob. Decent dramas have been made with less. The potential is there...as long as they don't drag it out like Smallville.

Cop shows are easy cause they are an easy way to write your characters into very dramatic situations every week, which also works for doctors and lawyers.

Not so easy to do when your lead character works as a bartender or innkeeper or something.

I was thinking along the same lines, but instead of a courtroom drama, it needs to be a comedy about a family... just a normal, everyday, American family where the dad's some blue-collar schlub and the kids are sarcastic and disrespectful.  Oh, and the mom needs to be attractive and maybe a little bit witty, but always supportive of the husband and his failed dreams despite the fact that she's obviously too good for him. Because, you see, she fell in love with him when he was a quarterback on the high school football team, and really somebody... not like the pathetic, flabby, middle-aged guy he is today.

And they have a goofy relative or neighbor who drops by all the time to liven things up. And maybe a sassy best friend for the mom.

I don't think that Vince Gilligan is capable of producing crap, thus I will make time to watch anything that he's involved in.

I'd prefer that he was taking over the Star Trek franchise, but more Vince Gilligan is still a win.

Not very far. According to Wikipedia, Dexter, MI is less than 2' of latitude north of Battle Creek. For some reason I'm now curious about how many lumberjacks live there.

I hope they use Arcadia Brewing as a location. If they actually film there I would gladly work as an extra for free beer

The second half of "Hancock" and the entirety of "Homefries" with Drew Barrymore says otherwise.
