Cute 21-year-old student lives with the urge to tear out her own hair: "I was almost bald by the age of 16"

(*RTFA*) Oh. Never mind.

But does the carpet match the drapes?

Said by anyone visiting the Politics page.

I deal with that problem 5 days a week

When I was a substitute we had a kid at the school who had this condition.  Unfortunately either she had horrible taste in wigs or her parents had no money for good ones.  Either way, it was just scary.

Man, the Mail LOVES stories of women with strange compulsions, don't they?

2013-09-25 09:34:30 PM
Damn, she's hot. I'd fark her until she could wring my man chowder outta that wig.

About 9 months

She looks like a right plucky gal.

2013-09-25 09:40:13 PM
I used to know one of these weirdos in school. Only she ate her hair after pulling it out. She never tried to hide it and usually it was because of her test scores.

I was friends with a guy who used to pull out his eyelashes. Strange compulsion, but as a guy it's not as noticeable.

Did she ever offer to bake you a

hair pie? hehhehe

Easy fix. Turn off the Glenn Beck.

2013-09-25 09:48:20 PM
I worked with a girl who had that.  She pulled out all the hair from her scalp AND eyebrows, as well as her eyelashes.  Her arms were also bald.

In case you're wondering: she was raised Mormon, was repeatedly sexually abused by her dad growing up. Oh, and now's she a mathematician.

2013-09-25 09:49:10 PM
I had a girlfriend in college who was roommates with a girl who did this. One day I asked her why she is always wearing a bandanna on her head... Awkward

2013-09-25 09:49:14 PM
Heh, I dated a gal with a mild version of this.

2013-09-25 09:49:52 PM
I did this in high school for maybe a week. Mom saw the now two-inch-wide bald spot on my head and freaked, made me go look at it in a mirror and told me never to do it again. So I didn't.

Just shave your head.  Bald chicks are hot.

Hermione_Granger: Trichotillomania is a biatch.

No kidding. Had it since about 10 myself, often in a fairly major way, but it waxes and wanes. Got special permission to wear hats in school for a long time, so for ages I was the hat guy. I still wear a fair number of hats, especially since I accumulated nice ones that I like, trich or no trich, but I've gotten much better at managing it, and so I don't wear them every day any more. Mostly through buzz cuts that make my hair too short to pull with my bare hands. I still get the urge, and use tweezers (or pull in less visible places), but the impacts aren't as large when you're pulling out two hairs at a time rather than a clump with 20 or so. Most people now would never know, but it's still there, it's just something I manage.

As an aside, I don't think I've ever shared that on the internet before.

Especially if you have ever seen pics of the hairballs that get cut out of people's stomachs because they can't digest it.

That is a busted 21.

I'm 29 now.. and have had trich since I was 13. I've gotten better at it, but it's still too much to grow a beard out. Too many spots, have to shave it after 2 weeks before it even reaches a half inch. Head is secondary spot but it goes on. When I was 13-19 I had to keep my head shaved, I'd have quarter sized spots within hours.

Trich sucks. Anti-depressants helped a little, but I don't want to take that shiat. My wife still gets on me once in a while after I pull out hair but she's understanding. I have three girls.. I try not to do it in front of them, in case it is also a learned habit.

I used to do something like this when I was a small child but it was different I think. When zoning out while reading or watching TV I would twist my hair around my finger as a habit and sometimes it would get wrapped too tight and I would have to pull it out. Never looked like the chick in the picture though.

From the article: "When India Barnes was 16 she had just half an inch of hair left at her hairline, but now is undergoing CBT, and at 21wears a hair piece..."

Apparently CBT has an additional meaning to what I'd thought...

2013-09-25 10:19:44 PM
Couple things. Her hair doesn't look like that because of obsessive hair pulling.
It's a skinhead girl hair cut:

Second, CBT will not help you regrow your hair.

Solution: buzz your hair, or outright shave your head.

Problem solved, two-page internet article in a tabloid unnecessary.

//That was easy.  Next silly problem?

I remember being 3-4 and getting caught putting glue in my hair and pulling it out as it got tacky. The night that I remember, I fell asleep without any progress-- parents were PISSED when I woke up and 1/4th of my head is covered in dry glue.

As a dad now, I'd have to be like... what. the. fark.

When I got older it turned into liking to pick salt out of my hair/off my scalp. Around 13 it just turned into trich. Sounds like you dodged a bullet. ;)

No kidding.  I'm grateful that mine is relatively mild and mainly manifests as picking at my eyebrows. Though with the combination of better anti-anxiety meds and a ponytail I can mess with instead has helped quite a bit. Which is good, because I've ended up with only 1/4 of my eyebrows before.

I'm told spinner rings help, so I've also considered one of them.

I'm a guy and do the same with facial hair. Sometimes I don't even realize I am doing it. The problem is solved by shaving everyday.

I went to high school with a girl who had this condition. I always felt really bad for her. She would pull her hair out one strand at a time and then put it in her mouth. She would sit on her hands during class to try keep from doing it, but she couldn't help herself. She was mostly bald all through HS.

//Not so CSB

Yikes!  I think I'd rather just pull my hair out.
