It saddens me though to see so many people making fun of someone who was obviously very sick.

Remember charlie sheen's hypomania and the cruel shiat said?

THAT is EXACTLY the kind of stigma and shaming that makes people too ashamed to seek the help that they need.

What this guy did was terrible. Perhaps it would never have happened if we stop treating mental illness and the people who suffer from it with such ridicule.

doyner: Releasing the video is still tasteless. What purpose does it serve?

And yes, I'm a little biased, BTW. This guy switched out SIPR machines in my office (a SCIF) Friday, September 13.

It serves no purpose and should be the sole property of the investigators. I agree with you. Releasing it serves absolutely no public service.

doyner: I guess it never is "too soon."

This week we all started to filter back to work and start finding our new normal.  Nothing like the release of this video to bring us all back to last week.

But I guess it's ok.  We all expected no less.

There is a lot of stuff that needs to be looked at on this. After what he did here in Newport, and was reported to the NETC Newport, they should have forwarded that information to higher for review. They sat on it.

He was having psychotic episodes. NPD reported those episodes. Someone should have gotten involved after that report.

Researcher: President Merkin Muffley: syrynxx: That's unbelievable.

OH REALLY?

You think the military would develop a technology to do EXACTLY THIS and not actually USE it?

Oh for pete's sake. The guy was mentally ill, the system failed him, he acted on his madness and tragedy ensued. It's sad, but he had a long, weird history of weirdness.

If he'd thought the Russians were monitoring him by satellite, the existence of Russia and satellites doesn't make that MORE credible. It just makes him the same kind of crazy in a different flavor.

/or if he had Morgellons, vapor trails, Truman show delusions, or a million other ways schizos go according to taste and timing.

More importantly, the original comment made by syrynxx was actually a joke.  A one-hit wonder band from the early 90s/late 80's called "EMF" whose hit song was "unbelieveable".  The earworm for the song basically goes "ooooooooohhhh.......you're unbelieveable"

/Thats the joke

I have learned on fark that shaming people is not only acceptable but admired, and something about bootstraps.

Oh...and i also own several firearms. Im a lifelong hunter. Strangely to some of you, ive never gone on a shooting rampage.

As you aptly pointed out, bipolar disorder isn't really insanity. It's fully manageable if the person, like you, has a modicum of responsibility and discipline, and access to the right chemicals to restore balance. I have people in my life with paranoid schizophrenia; there is no real treatment for that, aside from antipsychotics which only blunt the symptoms. Based on his behavior and the nature and manifestation of his delusions, the guy that shot up the Navy Yard also was paranoid schizophrenic. My mother has the exact same delusion that he had about being microwaved and mind-controlled.

The more you eat the more you fart: raerae1980: You know, I complain about having allergies but DAAAAMMN, mental illness is a biatch.

Yeah...it is.

But its not always like the murderous people you see in the news.

It doesnt have to mean you spend your life in an institution or a zombie. Many people with "mental illnesses" take vigilant responsibility for themselves and ensuring they stay well.

I am an advanced-practice nurse. I specialize in trauma. My whole career is focused on saving the lives of people who would otherwise die.

I also have bipolar disorder. (Okay, its technically not a true mental illness, but close enough to make my point). Ive learned how to actually use some of the symptoms to my advantage (being able to think ungodly fast, a near-photographic memory, my ability to connect, etc). I am also one of only TWO APN's in my state classified as "Magnet Status" nurses...in the top 0.5% of nurses in my field.

I stay on the meds..i am constantly acutely aware of my status, and take responsibility for doing everything I can to stay stable.

Mental illness does not make one less-than.

Amen.

Although a friend's brother is a Type I diabetic and an anesthesiologist. I've always wondered about his insurance rates. Among other things.
