If the object was to build a library of obscure coder puns, you're definitely in a sane environment.

shanrick: Emerson, Lake and Falmer? I listened to them in the 70's.

I'm not proud of this, but when ELP released Works Vol. 1 when I was 17 years old, it was my favorite album for the whole summer.

HindiDiscoMonster: The more you eat the more you fart: It saddens me though to see so many people making fun of someone who was obviously very sick.

Remember charlie sheen's hypomania and the cruel shiat said?

THAT is EXACTLY the kind of stigma and shaming that makes people too ashamed to seek the help that they need.

What this guy did was terrible. Perhaps it would never have happened if we stop treating mental illness and the people who suffer from it with such ridicule.

I have learned on fark that shaming people is not only acceptable but admired, and something about bootstraps.

Yeah well...then it should be no surprise when things like this keep happening.

Why did TFA say he was using a sawed-off shotgun? The surveillance image shows a standard Remington pump. I'm assuming that the reporter suffers from the usual journalist's ignorance of firearms (insert appropriate image here).

The more you eat the more you fart: raerae1980: You know, I complain about having allergies but DAAAAMMN, mental illness is a biatch.

Yeah...it is.

But its not always like the murderous people you see in the news.

It doesnt have to mean you spend your life in an institution or a zombie. Many people with "mental illnesses" take vigilant responsibility for themselves and ensuring they stay well.

I am an advanced-practice nurse. I specialize in trauma. My whole career is focused on saving the lives of people who would otherwise die.

I also have bipolar disorder. (Okay, its technically not a true mental illness, but close enough to make my point). Ive learned how to actually use some of the symptoms to my advantage (being able to think ungodly fast, a near-photographic memory, my ability to connect, etc). I am also one of only TWO APN's in my state classified as "Magnet Status" nurses...in the top 0.5% of nurses in my field.

I stay on the meds..i am constantly acutely aware of my status, and take responsibility for doing everything I can to stay stable.

Mental illness does not make one less-than.

I don't think you grasp the hugeness of the typical Farker's need to see somebody - anybody else as "less-than".

Mental illness does not make one less-than.

Which is our responsibility. I also am bipolar, type I rapid cycler (and if there's anything less fun, it is only schizophrenia), and I push constantly for changes in the laws that would let people intervene more intensively in the lives of people like Alexis BEFORE it comes to this, without excessive infringement on his civil rights. We have reached, I think, a tipping point in society where that line needs to be redrawn. A closer scrutiny of this man's background would have prevented him ever having either access to firearms or access to the Navy Yard; and better mental health care would have gotten him treatment (possibly against his immediate will) before he was so far gone he was hearing voices commanding him to kill.

Society needs to acknowledge that treating those who have command hallucinations is simply NOT a violation of their "civil rights" because they are obeying orders that a reasonable, rational person would not want to obey. Does anyone truly think Alexis sane would have done what Alexis insane ultimately did? But because of the laws now in place, his therapist could only let him go after this troubled man told him he was hearing voices telling him to kill. Because those voices had not given him commands specific enough to warrant "a threat to others."

At some point, perhaps we will grow up enough as a society to balance the needs of everyone and admit that we can care for the mentally ill even if it means partially suspending their right to choose for a short period of time. And I say that as one who might have to have her rights partially suspended for a short period of time. If I were hearing voices commanding me to kill, I would hope someone would do that before it was necessary for a police sniper to take me down.

The ACLU would disagree with you. I wouldn't, a long as there real time controls in place.

We just can't let ourselves get back to having grandma committed to get to her money levels of hospitalization.

Researcher: President Merkin Muffley: syrynxx: That's unbelievable.

OH REALLY?

You think the military would develop a technology to do EXACTLY THIS and not actually USE it?

Oh for pete's sake. The guy was mentally ill, the system failed him, he acted on his madness and tragedy ensued. It's sad, but he had a long, weird history of weirdness.

If he'd thought the Russians were monitoring him by satellite, the existence of Russia and satellites doesn't make that MORE credible. It just makes him the same kind of crazy in a different flavor.

/or if he had Morgellons, vapor trails, Truman show delusions, or a million other ways schizos go according to taste and timing.

More importantly, the original comment made by syrynxx was actually a joke.  A one-hit wonder band from the early 90s/late 80's called "EMF" whose hit song was "unbelieveable".  The earworm for the song basically goes "ooooooooohhhh.......you're unbelieveable"

/Thats the joke
