After years of intense efforts while outmaneuvering other suitors and spending tens upon tens of millions of dollars, Oracle finally completes the acquisition of the Americas Cup.

Team Oracle won? Man, nobody predicted that.

doesn't seem real to me.  i think they should test these boats for steroids.

Wow, I was watching like on Saturday and they said it was 8-1 and USA had to sweep the remaining races and I was like "no way".  Impressive.

And they say cheaters never win.

Yet, right-wingers will probably blame blah people for having to come back from a deficit.

Or creating it...pick your poison.

Tremendous race for these huge boats. It was a great boost for the city of San Francisco.

New Zealand has gallant sailors and were very humble and sportsman like in defeat.

Hooray for all.

I know some Kiwis who are not very happy right now.  Keep whining about how the crew aren't all Americans and such.

2013-09-25 10:18:00 PM
Jesus, I'm old. I thought the America's Cup was still 12 metre class.

2013-09-25 10:24:02 PM
I really did not like seeing Dean Barker all emotional like that. That basically ruined the moment for me. I don't like seeing classy people lose after years of effort, no matter how much I support the winner.

Here's hoping that Oracle maintains the same class of the boat and lets the Kiwis have another shot at Oracle with the same boats, but another couple years of refinement under their belt.

2013-09-25 10:24:03 PM
Yeah, I think they pretty much won this in a New York courtroom a few years back, but w/e, yay us.

2013-09-25 10:28:28 PM
The races are all on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/user/AmericasCup?feature=watch

Even if Larry is douchetastic, the boats are very cool.

2013-09-25 10:28:56 PM
I was just mere feet away from them when they won, and I can honestly say I can't possibly give less of a shiat.  My feelings are shared by just about everybody I know.  America's cup spent over a year jacking up rents in the city, and SF is something like $30 million in the red from hosting and setting up.  They also tore down an athletic field to make way for some of the grandstands that served a purpose for about three weeks, but are now obsolete.

But Larry Ellison cheated and spent his way to another boating trophy that nobody cares about, so there's that.

When Team Oracle was down 8-1, their own Kiwis from Core Builders Composites (based in Warkworth, just north of Auckland) arrived from NZ, and went over the boat and made adjustments.

Both boats were built in NZ, and both relied heavily on Kiwi experience. But the emergency call to CBC, and the modifications they made were the crucial difference I think.

I went up there today to watch, it was the first time i'd watched a race. I could not believe how fast those boats were (or how tall).

3 minutes before the 1:15 start time, the Kiwi boat seemed to be on the other side of the bay from the start. I told my wife (who is from NZ) "I wonder if they forget to set their clocks.. someone better tell them the race is about to start" and then they just turned, and sailed across the bay (with the tailwind) and I could not believe how quickly they traversed the whole bay in a matter of seconds.

I checked the race stats after the completion, and team NZ actually had the highest top speed in the race at 54+MPH (converted from knots) compared to 51+MPH from the Oracle boat... Oracle managed to complete the course in .3 fewer miles though (11.9 miles to 12.2) so they won. But 50+ MPH in short boats with 130'+ masts, cruising several faster than anything else on the bay (there were hundreds of smaller boats) looked unreal.

Seeing the Oracle boat hydrofoil upwind - that was amazing.

It must irk Ellison that Gates and Jobs got all of the attention while most of the public has no idea who he is. He's like the third tenor. Everybody has heard of Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti but hardly anyone knows the name José Carreras.

/Bet he cries about and then ten milliseconds later gets over it when he realizes he owns an island, a fleet of aircraft, and probably at least a couple of humans

Heh, I recall a Canadian comedy sketch where they introduced the Three Tenors as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and The Other Guy.

So Larry desperately needed Americans to start showing some interest in this event.

Then, strangely enough, a narrative occurred in which the heroic American boat somehow went down 8-1, then miraculously staged a heroic comeback at the end to pull out the razor-thin victory?

What a coincidence!  Couldn't have been scripted any better!

/no coincidence

Yes, what we need is more handouts and sleep/lie space for bums, more people who pay less for anything in the City, and fewer tourists. That'll make Frisco just great.

That's some solid booking. Even threw in a Dusty Finish in the end there. Creating some fake excitement to salvage a race that was a disaster for San Francisco was best for the business.

Let's see here... a team funded by the New Zealand government and sponsored by an airline owned by filthy rich sheiks in the Middle East intentionally folded against a team owned by a rich software guy. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

/I get why some would think that, but think about it a bit before running with it.

Why is this city so full of whiners? It's an epidemic. We get it, you don't care about yacht racing (yet you were there), you have a chip on our shoulder about the wealthy, you fear change, and you're hideously, horribly sour. But Christ Almighty your WHINING is so predictable and obnoxious. Heaven forbid we host events that cultivate varying interests in this city (Fleet Week Air Show anybody?).
