Well I supporter the Iraq war, but not for the lies given.

Also, why is it bad when Techcrunch does something but not as bad when -I don't know- Hooters does it?

If you think that sexism is rampant and needs to be snuffed out at all costs then you are a hypocrite for using the term 'brogramming' and you can go fark yourself.

"Brogramming" is not a thing. Being bad at your job while you dress like a douche and talk out your ass is neither a "culture" nor is it novel. It's just being shiatty at your job while dressed like a douche and talking out your ass.

Stop giving names to things that aren't things.

It's an app that puts boobies on your phone's screen, then snaps a picture of you looking at said boobies. That's about all I know, except that by one school of thought, only truly horrible people would ever conceive of such an app, much less actually pay money for it.

In any event, the people who made this thing got a big speaking gig at a TechCrunch conference, ran a presentation on it, and hilarity ensued.

Douchebags of this stripe have been around since some guy decided to draw his girl's tits on a cave wall. Why did we suddenly decide we have to have a new, retarded name for a particularly uninteresting subset of douchebag?

Amazingly, it seems like some people haven't learned a particularly obvious thing about the internet yet: THE INTERNET IS SHALLOW. shiatty music, cute cat videos, and upvote-whoring comments rule over all. It's not just boobs that get the shallow treatment. Outrage over it is a waste of energy.

If Hot Or Not had presented at a hackathon would they have been lauded or excoriated?

Probably excoriated, but on the Internet, those guys made millions and spawned an industry of hot or not ripoffs including ones for women to rank guys which clearly led to this well regarded app

i.imgur.com

And Hollaback as a new app too

i.imgur.com

So imagine four tech crunch presentations:

1) Hot Or Not
2) Lulu
3) TitStare
4) hollaback!

How would the press have handled these? The same?

To be honest there aren't enough brogrammers at my work and like only 3 women here to harass. If I'm not even going to be her worst harassment of the day then why even try... I also enjoyed how if you support these crazy people then you support the terrorists. It's true though, without titstare the terrorist win.

Nothing posted on Jezebel has ever been interesting to the general public. It's just another crappy Gawker blog where intolerably dull people imagine they have something to say worthy of print.

In fact, I'm starting to wonder if anything that could be deemed interesting has ever been posted to ANY Gawker site that wasn't picked up by more relevant media elsewhere at the same time or earlier...

I think what we are missing here is the reaction to the reaction to titstare. the fact that someone is defending a group of people attempting baudy comedy at a conference designed to share ideas for free tickets, just goes to show that these people do not give a shiat about technology.  Sure there is something in there about women being objectified and people better at speaking then me have ranted about it, but my big beef here is how the fraud was allowed.

Think about it, these people made an app they knew was shiat so they could keep the free tickets when their first idea blew up in their face. If we take the sexism out of it, these people still fit under what is meant by brogrammer, especially by not taking this seriously enough, and doing a half ass job.

The tickets were for Disrupt, not for the hackathon. The hackathon took place on the weekend, Disrupt took place the next week. Tickets were about $3K per person (based on the NY pricing)

i.imgur.com

I don't know if these guys flew from Australia just to attend Disrupt, but it is considered a huge conference when looking for jobs, co-founders, investors, or just to make connections to the press.

And yes, admission dropped from $3K per person to ZERO if you presented an app at the two day Hackathon. (Note: 2 day hackathons are not normally noted for lack of half assed ideas half assed implemented)

I am not sure how that makes them brogrammers, or fraud artists. They sound more like unemployed graduates of an Australian school hoping to get into a conference where they might find a job.

The idea is they are still being defended. everyone else with a drek idea was told to improve their ideas if they even got that much feed back. I am sorry for being unclear, but I am saying the people defending them are the problem, more so then the people presenting the idea.

As well, for any other profession, using pictures of breasts and some half assed project would be the worst way to find a job.

I apologize if this is repeating myself, for them they wanted to gain access to a conference they had tried their hardest to attend, but now found themselves short of the $6K required.

The judges of the hackathon in the article says, the joke they are being roasted over made fun of men.

You will notice it's a presentation intending to take the piss out of guys who stare at women's breasts, a fact people seem to misinterpret as myopic due to the fact they guys made fun of the viral internet article we've seen for years that staring at women's breasts is good for your health and some cheesy play on words.

But as I've pointed out the horrible joke they are being lambasted for is well pretty much equivalent to apps and websites that have made millions in legal and non pornographic means on the net. And when that same app is devoted to the anonymous calling out of men, the app is lauded and funded  both in form as Lulu as well as in iHollaback.

So would I have created that app? No. I think it was in poor taste.

However, is it the massive offense to women and responsible for keeping women down and indicative of the misogyny in tech as is claimed? No, absolutely not.

It was a harmless joke intended to gain these two guys entrance to disrupt. If it points anything out, it points out the double standards in tech that encourages the same sort of app when it is about the shaming of men and excoriates the creators of any similar app if the target seems to be women.

I like how he tries to make it sound as though what they did was groundbreaking, but they really just come off as an annoying younger sibling going for the low-hanging fruit because all they want is a response. It's sad.
