(Kansas.com)   It's easy to fence stolen scuba gear, right? Maybe try somewhere other than Dive Capital of the World: Wichita, Kansas   (kansas.com) divider line 38

Stealing is bad and all that, but keeping $10,000 worth of scuba gear and a civil war revolver (WTF why is that stored with his Scuba Gear?) in a trailer that can't be locked, in a hotel parking lot is pretty stupid.

Thousands of miles of amber waves as far as the eye can see....

I'd just describe Wichita as a big dive.  The rest of that was unnecessary.

A quick GIS revealed what I already suspected.  There is no SCUBA divinge in Kansas.

Scuba gear is expensive. Its why i have to rent my regulator and dive computer. :(

Not subby, but I disagree. The term is not that obscure. It's been a part of thieves' cant since at least the 1700s, and like many of the terms in that jargon, it's made its way into the popular lexicon via mass entertainment since the 30's.

I just don't think that (as a rule)  subby's  all that literate, and definitely not that dangerous. :)

There's actually a dive shop in far West Texas, in the middle of no where desert. It's for the divers who swim Balmorhea Springs.

Stealing from hotel parking lots in shiatholes must be rampant.

Friend of mine has his entire bands gear stolen from a locked trailer in a hotel parking lot.

He, smartly brought his guitars in every night.

It is, a trailer in a hotel parking lot screams, STEAL SOMETHING HERE!  Plus it is pretty much a given that the person is not a local so the stuff should be easy to sell.

My dad had his work backpack and laptop stolen out of his trunk in a hotel parking lot.  He filed a police report, but he was pissed because he had a bunch of proprietary stuff for some designs he was doing on there.  I don't know if his corporation lit a fire under the police's butt or something, but they took prints from his car and caught the thief in the same day, along with a bunch of other stolen gear.  It was weird, he found the break-in at around 8 or 9am and had his stuff back before dinner.

This is way I always completely unpack my car every night when I'm on a roadtrip.  Yes it's a damn pain in the ass, but I sleep far better knowing my stuff is in the room with me.

So many theft apologists.

I'm betting that trailer was just asking for it, looking so sexy and it was obvious it wanted it, hanging around a hotel parking lot like that.

It's mostly a shoe store.

/apparently reservoir diving is popular around here

"If stupidity was a crime, this guy would get the death penalty," Adventure Sports general manager Mark German said Tuesday.

The thief or the guy who left $10K worth of stuff under a tarp?

Most folks out in Wichita go dive Table Rock Lake, Beaver Lake (both about 4 to 5 hours driving) or can head out to Lake Travis if you want a bit more of a hike. I hear that diving down to see the old underwater oak forest and the remnants of the now underwater town of Oasis is really quite cool.

My fiance and I actually JUST got our open water diver cert from Mark at adventure sports not but a few weeks ago. Our check dive was out at Table Rock on Labor Day Weekend.

And two weeks from now we'll be diving in the Caribbean :-)

It was lame dig at subby, that's all. Also a reason to talk about Elder Scrolls games, which are consistently awesome.

If you're traveling cross-country with scuba gear and a "Civil War-era revolver", there had better be a treasure map involved. :P

OK if somewhat boring and shallow just like the diving locations Kansas.

Ironically, Amber Waves Diving Co. is right down the road from Adventure Sports.
I got my Open Water cert & Nitrox cert from Adventure Sports but Amber Waves is a good shop too.
