Lets see...

large numbers of mindless people not paying attention to anything but their own consumerism
countless dozens of mindless teenagers buried in their phones
fantastic lines of sight with minimal cover
potential for mass panic during and afterwards

Why hasn't this happened yet?  Beats me.  But it will happen.  They recently caught a lunatic in SLC who was going to do it.

I'm a bit surprised we haven't had an attack like this here in the US.  Plenty of places other than malls are wide open and vulnerable too.  I'm not sure how much of it is vigilant police work and how much is due to potential terrorists being mostly of the "hey lets set my own balls on fire" level of intelligence.

The damnedest thing is, in places like rural or overgrown big town America, even the gun-free zones are full of people who are packing.  They just keep their traps shut and go about their lives.  You might ask where places like that would be.  Let's just leave that up to the goblins to discover the hard way.

Small strip malls, maybe not.  But those multilayer, vaulted suckers with all manner of hidden maintenance passageways, dramatic overpasses, and glass, glass, concealment-preventing glass EVERYWHERE...

You're a genius! What we need to do is somehow convince that terrorists that what we fear the most is them setting their own balls on fire.

So you ponder why no one does something bad, you write an article about it, and you hope no one goes and does it. Brilliant.

As too why not, I suppose the people smart enough to wreck havoc on that scale are smart/sane enough to know they won't get away with it.

People still go to shopping malls?

I guess I could see it somewhere colder, but down here, they've mostly gone to seed in favor of outdoor shopping centers like this...

I suppose people could still attack those, but they don't offer the same sort of boxed in corral that indoor malls do.

Smackledorfer: Terrorists are few in number and low in intellect, given how ridiculously little damage they've caused since 9-11.

Probably the former.

It's really, really easy to kill yourself with bombs. Like REALLY easy. If there were dumb terrorists, we'd see wanna bes exploded in basements and sheds all over the place. At the very least in the hospital.

Also, caution takes intelligence. Dumb people just go balls out and don't worry about consequences. Get dumb terrorists, they just go attack the nearest target head on like The Monarch's hechmen, and meet the same bloody fate. So most people who are smart but hold anti-American designs just vote Tea Party.

No, the real problem is terrorists are over-represented in the media. There's so few of them Stateside you could look forever and never find one, let alone a group. They're the new communists.

Yes, I hate when that happens too. Perhaps it was less a function of WHAT was attacked (a mall) and more all about WHERE the attack happened (Nairobi). Lets face it, when you have neighbors like Somalia and Uganda, you're living in the low rent district with the gangbangers and Bad ThingsTM are bound to happen.

If I was an evil fundie desert-based 72-virgins-luving religious bastard, you complacent farkers would be all dead. That 911 thing would just be a sidenote in US history.

See, bombs and things that go boom! is old news. It's boring and really ineffective. What you want is a catastrophe of epic proportions. The film 12 Monkeys laid the blurprint.: Viruses, man.

I'd inject one sad bastard with the promise of afterlife sex with teen virgins un-burqaed and let him roam the US infecting everyone he meets with the highly contagious virus. In fact, I could send a whole army of holidaying Allah Akbars into your American towns and see the devastation in a matter of months, or years, if I wanted a slow-release kinda armegeddonado.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache: Pretty much have thought this since 9/11, so.....

I worked at a mall ON 9/11. Went into work despite what was on the news, and we were all pretty freaked out, but a couple hours into the shift they closed the mall anyway exactly because of concerns like this. And then we were open like normal the next day.

Ironically that was the day that I learned that despite the terrorists' goals, we evil westerners are just too wide-spread for them to affect large numbers of us at a given time... years later after joining the Reserves, I was talking to a professor at a rural University (where I now live) and he yammered about how afraid of terrorists he was. I said "Come on. We're in [SMALL TOWN]." Seriously, there are so many bigger/better targets, but the national fear-mongering has really done it's work on people. This guy was willing to give up (whatever) freedoms merely at the thought that this town fifty miles from any real city center *might* *possibly* be a target.

SURE it is, professor dude. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

After some more research it appears you're right. There were early reports that the mall was at least in part owned by Israelis but that appears to be incorrect.

Wouldn't those same features also make it difficult to defend? I mean if you're assaulting a shopping centre then sure, that's handy, but if you've got hostages and you're trying to defend the place, wouldn't those same things be working for the people you're defending against as well?
