To be fair, the priest didn't support abortion, he supported women in the clergy. Kind of a big difference between the two.

And obvious tag is appropriate.

The important thing is the Pope SAID some things that people saw as POSITIVE.

Now back to the daily floggings.

The nerve of this pope!

"Sorry Libs, this Pope is conservative."

Umm... no shiat?  He's just not a Nazi sympathizing, pedophile enabling (so far) caricature like the last guy.

The priest had resigned his ministry in 2011 and started his own church. The defrocking and excommunication were just a formality at this point.

I thought flogging the bishop is exactly the sort of behavior that gets one excommunicated in the first place.

Yeah, but he's got a really good PR campaign, so it's all good.

Yep. Now, excommunicating Ted Cruz would show the Pope is serious about Catholic teachings.

Well, of course. The Catholic Church is against anything that keeps priests from having access to more children to rape and molest.

Totally saying that at the earliest opportunity.

Ironically, you'd have a better case for Bergoglio sympathizing with a murderous dictatorship than you would for Ratzinger. Also, what exactly has the current Pope done to deal with the whole "institutionalized rape" thing?

To further show his support of Catholic values, Pope Francis has now defrocked and excommunicated a priest in Melbourne, Australia, because of his support of gay marriage and women in the clergy

So he supports gay marriage the same way Obama supports legalization of marijuana.

Not in the slightest.

I'm unaware of any documents indicating Frances participated in any enabling or covering up of sex crimes involving priests. The same can't be said of his predecessor. If I'm wrong, fark this guy too.

Also, I'm not Catholic, so I don't really care other than this guy doesn't seem to be Palpatine reincarnated.

Done. Let's check the score:
Pelosi (Catholic who supports abortion - apostate)
Reid (Mormon - heretic)
Cuban Canadian (Baptist - heretic)
McConnell (? - probably heretic)

I think it's unfair to label Cardinal Ratzinger a Nazi sympathizer. All German boys of a certain age at the time were required by law to join the Hitler Youth, under threat of retribution to the boy and the family if it was refused.

It is hardly fair to label him a Nazi for this reason. There are plenty of legitimate criticisms you can level without resorting to making stuff up.

Actually, I like this little game.... we should do this for real.... each side gets to kick out one representative, we do that for 50 rounds.... at the end, we should have a much more sane and moderate house with the 338 left.

No, it's plenty fair. It may not be accurate, but it is fair to associate one with the company they keep.

Also remember the core beliefs will not change, especially the Sanctity of Life. So no changes in the Church's position on contraception, abortion, the death penalty or euthanasia. Not going to happen, no matter who is Pope.

He excommunicated a guy who split from the Catholic Church and set up a competing religion.

This is like claiming that Martin Luther got excommunicated for not hating Jews enough.

So it's fair to call antebellum blacks stuck on Southern plantations racists because they "kept company" with a bunch of slaveholders?

No wait - the victims of Auschwitz were anti-semites because they "kept company" with Nazis!  That's what you were aiming at, right?

The guy gave communion to a dog.  If you haven't turned in your Catholic Card by that point, it's not surprising if the Church politely shows you the door.

As a pope, it was already damage control time, but he ran the  Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 1981, and would you care to guess one of the things that congregation is responsible for?  Yet there is mounting evidence he dropped the ball several times, going back even before that, when he was still Archibishop of Munich.

So yeah.  fark that guy.  Like a previous poster said, if you bag on him for being a "Nazi" then you have to rebuke everyone you know who has a German grandfather, because he was a pretty unenthusiastic Nazi (didn't go to meetings, and deserted the Luftwaffenhelfer to go back home when shiat started getting real), but you can absolutely hold his feet to the fire for his actions in a position of authority.

He might not want to have the Church shatter into 1000 pieces by doing that, though. He might want to change it less rapidly.
