No self respecting Fake First Lady should have less.

Does this trigger an automatic Sarah Palin presidency? Can I get a ruling?

Nope, I call my keyboard Charles.

Damn.

Well I'm definitely not voting to reelect her then.

I was hoping this would change.

2013-09-24 01:23:22 PM
Is there some purpose for 'fake' twitter accounts? Is it a number padding game, or what's the deal?

2013-09-24 01:23:22 PM
It is possible that she is experiencing something Popehat also experienced.

A sort of spam-attack to try and get your twitter pulled (by signing up lots of fake followers, then going "LOOK! THEY HAVE LOTS OF FAKE FOLLOWERS.")

http://www.popehat.com/2013/09/17/spam-attack-immediately-follows-po st -on-brett-kimberlin/

I have no idea, though. I didn't even know that was a thing that could happen.

So, do we recount the Twitter votes that were cast during the 2012 election or will they just allow this travesty of justice to go unpunished like Bush's war crimes?

2013-09-24 01:25:26 PM
Gratuitous "gigantic ass" reference.

This just in: People create accounts on websites then never use them.

How on Earth do you tell which Twitter followers are fake? Even the real ones usually don't pass the Turing test.

Yeah, this sort of thing happens to high-profile Twitter accounts all the time.  Hell, occasionally I get notices from Twitter that I've picked up several new followers, and I hardly ever post anything there.

Of course, this being The Daily Caller, a site founded by the bow tie-wearing dick Tucker Carlson (to use Jon Stewart's phrase), I'm sure the tenor of the article was "LOLZ Fartbama's wife twitter account is fake".

Sounds like a bunch of Twitter lovers to me

Given that this lovely article comes courtesy of gap-toothed idiot's website, I'm sure it should be given the credibility it deserves. By which I mean no one needs to pay attention to it at all.

That and/or some people create twitter accounts just to receive tweets from celebrities/bands/politicians/etc.

2013-09-24 01:44:44 PM
...and that would compare to the entire user-base of Twitter how?

If those are the same proportion of fake/inactive accounts across all of Twitter; or at least across a representative sampling of other accounts with high-numbers of followers than this is a non-story or a purposely misleading story.

If those numbers are way outside the norm across all of Twitter, or across that same representative sample, then this is an incomplete story.

Either way...shiatty story.

ElLoco: Is there some purpose for 'fake' twitter accounts? Is it a number padding game, or what's the deal?

They're spam accounts trying to blend in by looking like they follow what everyone else follows. Bill Simmons (2.2 million followers) frequently mentions on his podcast that he felt that once he hit a certain amount of followers, the spam bots started piling on.

FTA:
According to the Twitter analytics application Status People, 37 percent of Michelle Obama's 5,290, 506 Twitter followers - or approximately 1,957,487 followers - are considered fake. Thirty-five percent of her followers are inactive, and 28 percent are considered "good," or real.
So how do they tell the fakes from the real?

2013-09-24 02:13:53 PM
I'm no Obama fan but making Michelle an honorary Kardashian?  That's too cruel.  Michelle doesn't deserve that.

Just don't twerk us anytime soon, that would be devastating!

There's that. Then there is Gingrich buying twitter followers

Something tells me Michelle Obama didn't fork over money to gain twitter followers.

Honestly, who cares?  I don't particularly care for her or her husband, but there are lots of reasons to criticize them that actually matter.

This is just stupid.

ElLoco: Is there some purpose for 'fake' twitter accounts? Is it a number padding game, or what's the deal?

Spam accounts, mostly. If you have a high profile account, your numbers go up so quickly that you really can't keep up with all of them, so you only really pay attention to the ones you want to follow back. And since you're not personally checking each and every single follower, you don't block each and every spam bot that follows you, so you accumulate more of those. Heck, my account has only 550+ followers at present, and I know I have more than a few following me, but I'm too lazy to clear them out. I'm sure there's an app somewhere that will take care of it.

It's pretty par for the course. I'm actually looking for something that will tell me how many fake Twitter followers Tucker Carlson has.

2013-09-24 03:10:42 PM
Looks like Tucker Carlson is sporting a 64% fake/inactive following, himself. That gives him just over 99,937 "fake" accounts out of his 156,153 followers.

Who the hell follows a Twitter account obviously run by someone else anyway? Or any Twitter account for that matter?

Was this a serious question?

This is a pleasant surprise.  Normally when someone on Fark mentions they don't care for the President (or his politics), they are called racist.

If I read that right, the definition of "fake" is "inactive". Seeing as I haven't posted anything to Twitter in like, forever, I must be a fake Twitter account. I would like the t-shirt please.

I AM A FAKE TWITTER ACCOUNT. I think I will befriend poor old Michelle and not post anything to her fake Twitter account until Election 2014.

Well, I could.

Sheesh! If this works, I could befriend Rush Limbaugh next. And then cancel my email notifications.

I wonder how many of my "Twits", as I call Twitter followers, are Fake? Seeing as I haven't looked at my Twitter account for so long, I have to assume they are all fake. Or else very, very patient.

Is that true? If you don't post, you show as inactive? I've post exactly 3 times ever from my Twitter account. I follow a few MMA accounts and a few comics. I thought logging in made me "active".

Well hell. I AM FAKE TOO!

free comedy. it's why i follow patton oswalt, louis c.k. and a few other funny folks.

in fact, patton oswalt's twitter troll a few weeks ago was a brilliant use of the genre's 140-character limitation.
