I've always wondered about this. It seems like it's such a universal and natural way to play with our children, pretending to eat their feet, etc. They laugh and want you to keep doing it. I thought that type of play was a survival thing, like a way to teach our young about predator/prey relationships. But looking at it literally or without context, it always just seemed creepy and weird.

I ask my two-year-old if I can eat her toes almost every day.  She quite insistently says "NO!" each time, even if I ask to eat just one.

/Lame story, bro.

But, I'm a dingo

And, I ate your baby.

no urge to eat a baby. no sir. S.O. though yes, and I mean eat as in take a bite, not what you're thinking. I guess the smell of them can release dopamine as well?

2013-09-24 10:25:43 AM
No, that's not what the study said, genius. New moms smelling that new-baby smell get a dopamine rush. That's what the study said. Dopamine is the brain's all-purpose reward signal. Yummy food triggers it, but so does every other reward stimulus, including gambling, sex, and music.

[grumble grumble]

Stupid journalists. Whatever. Baby-eating jokes are funny. Carry on.

Yeah but the way the article and Subby present it is not at all what the experiment tells us only that the smell of babies is activates the reward center in women's brains. Similar to that of food to a starving person, not that there is literally a craving to eat babies.

2013-09-24 10:38:46 AM
These days reading about "reward centers in the brain" (or any other "center" there) makes me think of small, cheap, mass-produced brain implants. That can be programmed before or at insertion and/or controlled remotely. At first they'll focus the ad campaign on pedophiles or something, some socially yucky element that you'll forget are comprised of human beings: we'll be told that requiring its implantation is a blessing for us and for them, that it protects them from the dreadful consequences of their deviance, then it'll be marketed to the public as a mental health product. You know, "I used to be afraid of flying on planes and going to parties but thanks to my Phobia Controller they're loads of fun now!" and "Grandpa's Alzheimer's was making our lives miserable but since we got him this Brain Relief implant he's stopped flinging poo and ranting about Obamacare. It really is a relief!" And then...

Love it, here we go.  Ok so their connecting points are the release of Dopamine and neural responses blah blah.  Funny, it is a the same with hugging and a 1,000 other things where Dopamine is  released and could be just as easily misconstrued...but if they said hugging is the same feeling as wanting to eat your child up because the amount of joy overfills your heart and is literally an overload of emotion that is inexplicable wouldn't sell nor inspire people to read the article.  The connection they are making is a false one and presumptuous.  This is a pseudo science at it's finest.  I am done and moving on, sorry if your degree is in this field, don't worry people will always buy into this and you will still be a wealthy person, have a great day.

Journalists reaching for a stupid conclusion.

Anyway, as far as the "I want to eat you up" impulse is concerned--I have a new baby, and yeah, I just want to kiss him all over. I think it's because our lips are sensitive and babies are soft. It feels good.
