From the good 'ol days

I hope they don't get shot down in the wildcard game, that would be sad.

I wish Lanny Frattare could have called that game....

AND THERE WAS NOOOOOOOOOO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!  (tm)

Oh Nationals why did you wait until August to figure out that you also need some Offense to go along with your pitching.

No, sad will be they win the wild card only to get chopped once again by the Braves.

Even if they only last the one playoff game, I don't care.  Just seeing baseball in the month of October is completely worth it.

Let's go Bucs!

I particularly enjoyed their last playoff appearance.

From a Phillies fan from the east side of the state, I'm hitching my bandwagon onto the Pirates for the playoffs.  Congrats guys

There's still time to repent and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, but, uh... you may wanna hurry up on that.

I will be at Wrigley tomorrow so I can congratulate them in person.

Me too. I have tickets for the first NLDS game in Pittsburgh.

Congrats Pitt, may your postseason run last longer than that 1 game. And may this be the beginning of many more postseason appearances, your fan base deserves it.

I personally don't know why Pirates fans haven't risen up, killed, and eaten the Pirates owners and their upper management. They would be delicious compared to the shiat Pirates fans have been fed for the last two decades.

Congratulations Pirates fans. Good luck. And you would do well to prepare to fail because your team's owners are such huge dicks.

2013-09-24 01:54:42 AM
Francisco Liriano, Gerrit Cole, and A.J. Burnett in a five game series. If they survive the wild card game, I could see the Pirates prevailing in the NLDS. I don't know if they can hang with the Dodgers in a seven game series, but it would be fun to see them get to the Series.

I'm not afraid to say it:  Big Red Machine all the way!

I don't dare go to sleep, for fear this is all a dream.

/The last time I saw a winning Pirates team, they were playing the Expos at Three Rivers
//Think about that for a moment

Awesome! Who knows what'll happen in a single game though

The Braves will be happy to end your most recent playoff berth as well...

Nationals shut down entire team in anticipation of inevitable 2014 playoff run.

What do they do is St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati all end up with the same record at the end of the year?

Because everyone was on the DL until June.

As long as they lock Melancon in a big metal chest and wrap chains around it for the next month, I think we'll be ok

I went to high school with Charlie Morton. It was a big deal when he got drafted by the Braves way back when, and I was so disappointed when I heard he was traded to the Pirates.

Looks like you finally get your chance in prime time Charlie, show em what you got

Dougie AXP: They'll lose to the Reds

You forgot about one crucial factor. The biggest factor in MLB today. It may even be more powerful than the force of the Pirates being bad the past 2 decades. That factor?

Because if there's one thing the Braves do, it's live up to post-season expectations.

It's been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.

You know what?  I don't give a damn if they make it to the Wild Card Game and get blown out by the Reds 15-3.  Since Win #81, Pirate fans like me are playing with house money.  While I'd love to see them go on a tear that sees them win the World Series, I'm realistic.

That said, the gap between Pirate World Series titles (1979 to 2013) is the second-longest in team history, the longest being their wins in 1925 and 1960.  They're due.

CSB -- I went to high school with his daughter (she was a total biatch, although 16-18 year old girls tend to be) and I met Lanny a few times. It's actually kind of disconcerting because he doesn't have a "radio voice" -- that's just his normal speaking voice.

The Chicago Cubs scoff at your notion of "due".  Mathematically speaking, Chicago should have  accidentallywon a WS by now.

They need to win the wild card game, or they aren't really inthe playoffs.

No argument.  Next time the Cubs are in the postseason, I'll pull for 'em.

The Muthaship: What do they do is St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati all end up with the same record at the end of the year?

This explains all the various scenarios.

If one team wins the division, the other two are seeded for wild card based on head to head record.
If two teams tie for the division, they play a tiebreaker game for the division win. Home field for the playoff game is based on H2H. The loser goes to the wild card play-in game.
A three way tie results in a completely screwed up mess, basically. Team A and Team B play one game at Team A. Loser of that game is a wild card team. Winner of that game hosts Team C for another game. Loser of that game is the other wild card team. Determination of A, B, and C is a combination of H2H and winning percentage.

Of course, none of this matters, since the Cards are going to win out against Washington and the lowly Cubbies, while Pitt and Cincy beat each other up to finish the year.

Have you seen the Nationals record as of late?  Some of those boys are playing for a job.

Actually, it seems that the reason the Pirates sucked for those two decades is because the owner was busy chasing huge dicks. His focus certainly wasn't on making the Pirates into the winning team he promised he would make them, but he certainly had time to make a big deal about his coming out, which not a single person who cared about the Pirates gave two shiats about.

I'm just glad that Nutting either did what McClatchy never did and paid out for a winning team or, more likely, stayed the hell out of the way and stopped making the Pirates MLB's farm team.

I never thought I would see this coming. For a while I was predicting them vs. the Athletics for the hell of it. Maybe it will come to reality after all.
