I wonder if they found actual remains that they can do something with

The WTC was 1300 feet and people turned into spaghetti when they hit the ground on 9/11. This guy fell 28000 feet, so yeah.

People were pulverized by the buildings falling on top of them, and they were landing on concrete.  You still remain mostly intact hitting dirt at terminal velocity.  Like a wet bag of sakrete, wherever a hole first appears relieves the pressure upon impact.

Also, it sounds like this guy's chute partially deployed, so he might not have hid at 120+ mph.

I've done a jump from a smaller height (4 km), but I always thought that dying like that would be an awful way to go. From his height, you'd have some time to think about things before the end. I'm guessing you'd just be full of regret.

You'd think that if there were a possibility of passing out the opener would be mandatory. Hypoxia messes up your thinking longer than getting into higher oxygen pressures would take so I could see him looking at the ground rushing up thinking, "There was something I was supposed to do, what was it?"

Sucks for him. If it were only 28,005 feet he would have been fine.

I'm pretty sure most of the jumpers liquified. I saw nothing but red puddles after they hit the pavement.

On the one hand, a person probably wouldn't hit terminal velocity from 1300 feet, especially in a flopping about free fall. On the other, the skydiver may have had some drag from a partially opened chute.

Depending on how showboaty he was being, he wouldn't have opened his primary until 2500 to 4000 feet. I've had friends that waited until longer and used a skyhook to make sure they had a split second to cutaway and still have a reserve. So figure about 6 seconds per 1000 feet if he's getting some drag from the failed canopy.

The problems come in if he was unconscious (head bang or o2 problem), or dazed (spinning), or his cutaway didn't work for reasons unknown, or he froze. If you deploy your main at 4000' you ought to have time to cut away. But it's a horrific bung puckering thing the first time you have to do it. People bite it every year in the military screwing with the chute too long or just freeze and plop in.

i jumped only once. 35 years ago at 3000 and i had a static line. i didn't fall/slip off the foot rung on the side of the plane like i was supposed too. i pushed off and started to do a sommersault. the chute bag hit hit me in the head/neck right below my helmet. it hurt like hell and i was dazed the entire time and went off course landing in a corn field. i walk back and the skydive club is yelling at me for bringing back a chute filled with corn stalks. then the farmer shows up. once was enough.

At least he died doing what he loved, screaming.

Ha! Did you guys ever see the video of the guy that got the new camera setup, was so worried about getting the camera just right that he jumped without a chute? Recorded all the way in, although you could tell he was getting pretty agitated when he realized his chute hadn't opened...

I have to believe it was faked, but it was a GOOD fake.

How many Instagram selfies did he post on the way down?

According to the sheriff's department, the skydiver was jumping from West Tennessee Skydiving facility when he may have run into some trouble with the parachute.

That's some fine police work there, Lou.

From what I understand, it's actually High Altitude Low Oxygen. Not Opening as the article says.

I'm just impressed that he managed to search for nearly six hours after hitting the ground.  I wonder what he was searching for.

I once read a bumper sticker saying: 'Minds are like parachutes, they only work if open'.

I'm guessing his mind is wide open now.
