OG fanboy here -- Apple II in high school, Mac partisan even during the Amelio years and all that.

I get the strange feeling that a lot of this is not organic demand.
Just judging by the anecdotal "evidence" of reports of scammers employing homeless proxies to wait on line to buy for them, I think a higher-than-usual percentage of those 9 million phones are now being hawked on the secondary markets.

We seem to be in an iPhone bubble.

But I could be absolutely wrong.

It is now official. Business Insider has confirmed: Apple is dying.

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Apple community when IDC confirmed that iPhone market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all smartphone handsets. Coming on the heels of a recent Engadget survey which plainly states that iPhone has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Apple is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Smartphone Security Showdown survey.

You don't need to be the Amazing Kreskin to predict Apple's future. The handwriting is on the wall: Apple faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Apple because Apple is dying. Things are looking very bad for Apple. As many of us are already aware, Apple continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

The MacBook platform is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time iOS developers Rovio and Paul Hegarty only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: iOS is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

MacRumors leader Arnold Kim states that there are 7000 users of Mac Mini. How many users of OS X Server are there? Let's see. The number of Mac Mini versus OS X Server posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 OS X Server users. AppleTV posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of OS X Server posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of AppleTV. A recent article put MacBook at about 80 percent of the Apple PC market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 MacBook users. This is consistent with the number of MacBook-related Usenet posts.

Due to the loss of icon Steve Jobs, abysmal sales and so on, Pixar went out of business and was taken over by Disney who refuse to support the creative concepts of Pixar. Now Disney is also unable to neatly swallow Pixar, its corpse forced to create films like Planes against their wishes.

All major surveys show that Apple has steadily declined in market share. Apple is very sick and its long term survival prospects, like the prospects of its founder, are very dim. If Apple is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. Apple continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Apple is dead.

Working at a cell store, I can only hope they tighten things up a little.  That i07 update bricked every phone (except new ones) I saw for the first two days and apple said to just replace them.  Seems to have gone smoother after that, though. except the processor melting from trying to use that fingerprint junk

Generic Lightning adapters no longer work with 5S's on iOS 7.

They still work with 5's on iOS 7, though with a warning.

...and 5's on iOS6 are just dandy.

The fact that this is all done in software and has nothing at all to do with anything physical (apart from the $mall chip in the plug) is surely grounds for anti-competitive complaint?

I ordered a new 5s today at work. I have been eligible for an upgrade for a while. It is replacing my current Blackberry which our IT will no longer support. My personal phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3.

So why the iPhone 5s?

1) Able to use one handed
2) Notification center
3) Better push mail battery life
4) Better touch screen keyboard

I am pretty OS agnostic.

The numbers are skewed, because apple sold the iphone in 2 new markets, China being one of them, so when you have more than double the cell phone users in the US in China, where the Iphone has always been a grey market commodity then you are going to yield higher numbers, which oddly enough apple is not reporting sales by country.

I have tried a handful of 5S's on a variety of mains adapter plugs including Apple plugs but with the same generic leads, and none of the 5S's will work with this particular lead.

I've seen many 5's work with iOS6 perfectly well, but I have only seen a couple of updated 5's on iOS7 and they complain but charge anyway.

I have a feeling that Jobs would have thrown his entire effort behind the 5s, seeing as it is a beefy enough improvement to essentially tell the rest of the market to catch up once more. The 5C isn't cheap enough to be a bargain phone, which is sort of the point of its existence.

Does this include the numbers from the Chinese release?  If so, that 9 million sold is a bit deceptive since this is the first year that they have received shipments of the iPhone on the same day as the rest of the world and not been delayed for several months.

That iMac wasn't just about the color - it brought back the idea of a completely integrated computer - monitor and cpu combined into one unit, like the original Macintosh.  It had a handle.  It came with everything you needed to connect to the internet out of the box, which was a novel concept at the time.  And most importantly, it was under the $2,000 price point.

Also remember Jobs signed off on that goddamn hockey puck mouse, which was a mistake they stuck with for far longer than they should have.

But what really made that computer a success is something that Microsoft will long regret - Office 98.  While there were previous versions of Office for the Mac, that was the first version that included IE for the Mac and Outlook Express.  In addition, Office 97 could open Word documents from Office 98.  Cross-compatibility made it far easier for users to make the leap from Windows to Mac OS 9.

If Microsoft had kept their biggest product incompatible with the Mac at that point, the success of the iMac would have been in question.  Apple at the time didn't have enough money to provide their own suite of products for business users, and it was the success of the iMac that let them bankroll the development of the iPod, which got the whole Apple machine going again.  Microsoft could have killed the baby in the crib, but they foolishly considered Apple a non-threat.

The "Apple approved" cables (Griffin, etc.) don't give the warning. I have a Griffin and a couple random brand cables, and I only get the warning with the random brands. Phone (a 5) charges anyway.

That's not true. Microsoft was under serious anti-trust scrutiny, and their commitment to the Mac was crucial to easing the potential downside of the investigations. Second, MS invested $150 million in return for stock. Microsoft could have made a fortune on the stock purchase (which they sold early).

All that doesn't change my notion that they regret the Office support.  And Microsoft's anti-trust problems were related solely to IE and its integration with the OS.  They could have given Apple IE for the Mac without Office.  Barring that, they still could have easily made Office for the Mac incompatible with Windows versions.  Instead, they made everything work cross-platform, giving Apple a leg up in their argument to "think different."
