ArcadianRefugee: Was that article written by, or for, an 8-year-old?
T.rex: I'm not really that scared of spiders, but i watched Arachnophobia for the first time last night as it was on cable, and it must've stuck with me because i had nightmares about spiders all night.

eyeq360: Since we're on a spider thread, here's some reading material. Do not read this if you are wince-prone to injuries involving the genital area, are not fond of graphic imagery, or do not want to suffer from horrible dreams due to spiders. Skip the following. If you do decide to read this, I warned you.Brazilian Wandering spider venom can cause certain people--namely males--to suffer from priapism, or a painful erection that lasts for many hours. Now, this may not sound like a bad thing, but its a possible sign that you might be on the verge of suffering from paralysis and eventual asphyxiation, as the venom contains a potent neurotoxin that blocks glutamate release/uptake in neural synapses, as well as calcium. While you are suffering from this raging erection, your entire body, but most intensely at the bite site, will suffer from excruciating pain and inflammation. Now, since there is anti-venom, and most people survive, death won't occur. However, remember that bit about the priapism. If you don't get the erection down, impotence is highly likely. Mainly due to penile gangrene caused by the spongy, erectile tissue in the penis not being able to release the blood stored inside. The blood cells, due to a lack of oxygen, will break down, causing the tissue to become gangrenous, and the only way to get rid of the tissue is by surgical removal. If you do get to a doctor in time, the most common way of solving the priapism issue is by the use of needles. Injection of drugs(saline and phenyleprhrine) into the penis through the corpora cavernosa with a 29 gauge needle along with compression to prevent hematoma is the first step. The next step is aspiration with a large bore intravenous catheter. Saline irrigation is used to flush out any blood that begins to clot. Local anesthetic or penile ring blocks are used as well. In an extreme case, additional phenylephrine is used, but in a diluted form, as an irrigation. Now, if that fails, surgical intervention is needed. So avoid being bit by Brazilian wandering spiders and if you do suffer from a bit and you get an erection that doesn't go down, go to the doctor immediately. Or you may become impotent and that is never a good thing.Oh, have a nice day and pleasant dreams...
