senor frank: the grey matter connection would have been enough... the financial news and pr blitz with interviews would have been on all of the 24 hour news and daily talk shows.

if a co-founder of a major corporation like apple, microsoft, google, or facebook was an on the lam meth lord, i am pretty sure it would merit a little national exposure and at least one "pun" graphic to go along with a daily show piece.

One word: McAfee.

a high school teacher making drugs with a former student would probably set off a ton of "think of the children articles" as well... hell, just the high school teacher meth cook story would do that without the connection to a former student.

Radak: It's not meth, but William Pickard (briefly) made national news when he was busted.  But if the DEA figures of him supplying 90% of the world's LSD are accurate, it was a somewhat larger operation than Heisenberg.

Wow, that Pickard story is crazy. I wonder how close his operation really was to a 90% supply rate though? It's not like the DEA doesn't occasionally exaggerate their figures.

jaylectricity: tollbooth_willy: jaylectricity: I remember Albuquerque...there were alway meth labs blowing up in the cheap hotels on Central Ave.

The weird thing about that show COPS is they loved doing Albuquerque but they never ever ever showed the gang stuff in the south valley. It was all drugs, domestics, and hookers.

I always wondered if the ABQ police department made that decision because they didn't want to make the city look bad. But now I'm wondering if it was just too dangerous to bring a film crew into the barrio.

Why go to the South Valley when the  War Zone International District is so much closer?

500 Texas St. I almost died there. Another time we woke up to bring home my roommate's hookup home and there was a dead guy in the gutter. Cane in one hand, gun in the other.

Spent time as a gun carrying security guard at Circle K, including the ones at Central/Pennsylvania and Zuni/Utah.  I'm pretty sure 75% of the clientele were packing a piece that would have put my 9mm to shame.

That's a good angle; best argument yet I think.

Yeah, but I'm not sure how long Walt was actually with Grey Matter.  It may be he's to Gray Matter what Ronald Wayne was to Apple: yeah, a co-finder technically, but not really there long enough to be associated with the company.

Of course, he could also be the Woz to Elliot Schwartz's Jobs.  Who knows.

Shostie: At the very least, I could see it showing up on Fark. Perhaps a feature in Rolling Stone.

That's exactly what I'd expect, once the connection (via marriage) between Walt and Hank came out.  Jane's death and the plane crash would only come up tangentially to the story (like Billy's death and Operation Genoa).

I see it as more of a movie, like American Gangster.   The title could be Blue Magic.

Typed this out for another forum the other day, guess I'll repost it here. It's topical because it happened in Albuquerque:

Has anybody ever had a gun pointed at them? I did. I was walking to McDonalds with $1.85 in change to buy two Big Macs. They were on sale for 88 cents each. I was a real loser at the time, donating plasma and shiat.
Anyway, I walk out into the street, a ghetto street, and a guy asks me if I want anything. He means crack. I say no, he says, "just sell these rocks for me." He was a big guy, wearing overalls with no shirt. I tried to say I can't and he says, "Just walk over here to my car with me."

I'm afraid. He pulls a gun out of his car and casually points it at me and asking, "Do you want me to have to use this?" I was petrified. Suddenly he looks towards his house as his pregnant girlfriend had come out. He yells, "Angela! Angela get back in the farking house!"

He is totally consumed with her I slowly walked away from him and went back to my apartment to ask my roommate to borrow her car. He must have been on the crack himself because he seemed to forget all about me as I drove by.

It would be local, maybe picked up as an oddball news story here and there. It's not like Walt is Pablo Escobar. He ran a semi-successful regional drug market and pocketed like $100 million. In the grand drug trade, he's nothing. He's like successful McDonald's franchisee. That's what always struck me as weird about his empire talk. He sold good meth in like a three-state area, and then eventually in Eastern Europe. Your average citizen would have no idea of the importance of blue meth in any case. We only knew it because Hank made Heisenberg out to be some mad scientist who makes the most super duper drugs on the planet.

If everyone and their mother was strung out on blue meth, then yeah, finding out some putz of a chemistry teacher orchestrated the whole thing would be national news, but there's not enough crossover between hardcore meth addicts and the general population as to make Walt's story anything more than a side blurb. His position in society would need to be higher - governor of New Mexico is ran the biggest drug trade in his state - or Walt's empire would've needed to be bigger: chemistry teacher's cartel controls entire southwest.

But that's exactly why national news outlets would love it: some white middle-aged schlub with an innocuous job suddenly becomes a millionaire drug kingpin? Dateline and primetime news shows live for that shiat.

To this point in the plot?

- Let's be honest with ourselves. Fox News would have busted all the nuts over the "hola DEA" incident. A bunch of dead and mangled DEA agents due to an IED planted by a Mexican drug cartel along the border? You'd  still be hearing about that from the Palin-Americans a year and a half after the fact.

- The Wayfarer crash would have eaten up a news cycle or two. It's too salacious a story -- airline collision caused by depressed air traffic controller whose hot junkie daughter took the Hendrix way out. The usual suspects on cable news would have gone haywire over mental health for air traffic controllers, blah blah blah.

- Busting Fring's operation would have gone nationally in "oddball" news. Definitely would have eaten up some snark. Fox and the Palin-Americans, again, would have lined up around the block to shoot a wad on that cracker.

- Chemistry teacher gone suspected meth kingpin, associated with Fring due to the blue meth connection, responsible for the deaths of  more DEA agents? Darrell Issa's office would be buried in a mountain of bloodied feathers. Meanwhile, every other cable news network would be lining up to run "what caused a mild-mannered middle-class teacher to do this?" bleeding heart stories. More talking head circle jerking over health care reform.

2013-09-23 11:37:31 PM
It would be a small story, until some cable news network desperate for ratings -- OK, OK, it's obvious I'm talking about CNN -- interviews Saul Goodman.

I'm starting to enjoy B.L.Z. Bub freaking out on every BB thread.

And to answer the question, hell the balloon boy was national news.  You never know.  Which reminds me, there's also the Drew Sharp angle, which was at least a big local story.  And Heisenberg is still missing too, so the story's likely to linger much longer than if he was in custody already.  It probably started local and became big news as all the info came out.  HS teacher, BIL in the DEA (and now DOA), the Grey Matter connection, the train robbery, etc.  He's probably up to legendary status by the time he shows up again in ABQ.

In the story, of course. In the real world I think Walt's story ends up as a question on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me rather than Charlie Rose.

Actually, need to correct myself here.  Drew Sharp isn't linked yet, I guess, since the Pinkman tape never got out (the Nazi boyz took it).  I was thinking maybe Marie saw the video before they stole it and was relaying all the info to the DEA and the press, but it looks like that never happened.

I love this show, I watched every episode from season 1 starting in June to get ready for the finale. And I've watched every episode 3-4 times a week. Hell, I'm watching last nights episode for the third time right now.

If you're not into it, I can see how these threads would piss you off.

It's great acting. Fascinating story lines. And characters that you equally love and hate.

1) No it wouldn't.
2) That didn't happen in Breaking Bad.

I think you meant Hank's bathroom.

2013-09-24 12:20:20 AM

DamnYankees: Kanemano: DamnYankees: What do you think would trigger the national coverage? Hank's death? Or just the knowledge that a chemistry teacher became a drug lord?

Chemistry teacher becomes drug lord even with brother in law DEA head who is missing presumed dead or possible partner? (especially if the DVD gets found and leaked somewhere, by say the Nazi's)

ongbok: simply the fact that a chemistry teacher, who was a co founder of a major tech company, became a major drug lord. That is enough to get a mention on cable news shows. Then throw in the fact that he is also suspected of killing two DEA agents will really peak interest.

I guess I just disagree. This seems more like a story that would be made into a movie, and then afterwards you'd be blown away to find out it was actually a true story and you can't believe you didn't hear about it when it happened.

Yeah, they'd get some big names to star in it too.  Denzel or maybe Lawrence Fishburne, Tobey Maguire, hell maybe Gary Oldman just because.  It'd be like American Gangster, but Southwest.

Gus Fring would've been national news, and daily news for months on end on conservative outlets. Gus is a gay, socialist, academic elite who fled Chile when our American-backed, heroic man of action, Pinochet, took control of the country in order to let capitalism and freedom ring. And this. Most of these moments would have eaten up at least a few seconds on the national news wire, especially Gus and the ties to Madrigal and the suicide in the bathroom. That would have eaten at least a few days on your money news reports as markets reacted to the news.

And there would have been a nation wide man hunt for Walt, especially as an Amber alert was issued. That would have gotten at least a passing mention by someone like Brian Williams. And as details emerged about him being a lowly Chemistry teacher, the drug lord details emerging it would have gotten more mention on your shows like Inside Report.

Then as time passed and everything came out, yeah I could easily see the board at at Grey Matter requesting that Elliot and Gretchen do 'damage control' to maintain stock prices that likely would have taken small hit from the news of Walt's attachment.

Which upon hearing them do this and dismiss him on top of the total loss of his family sends him into a blind Heisenberg rage and was the impetus for him to return to town loaded up both Bond stealth like with the ricin and Rambo style with the M60.

....there will be blood, ohh yes there will

I thought he left Chile beforehand, but I may not be correct in my dates. If he was part of the Pinochet crew, then he's news for an altogether different reason, because the Chilean courts (or the Hague) would probably like to have a long talk with him.

It probably would get a national byline that might get the publics interest for a max of a week and be forgotten a week later.  It would only be known long term because Blitzer would have had a breaking news piece where creditable sources maintain  that he police have found a working nuclear device in the garage.  The case would be known as the case that actually got CNN to shiatcan Blitzer.

It would definitely be a Dateline special that my mother would watch.

Walter sold his Grey Matter ownership very early on (to pay rent or something, I forget) so his connection to that firm would most likely be glossed over as interesting trivia.

I wonder what the "unforeseen consequences" were. Like, did a lack of LSD on the market lead to a shift to much more dangerous drugs, bath salts, etc.

Mexican/Chilean drug violence erupting in a bombing at an American nursing home? You bet your ass that would be national news. Especially how Gus was such a stand up member of the community first. Founders of fast food chains are minor celebrities in our society already.

The Grey Matter thing was described best by another farker in another thread. "It would be as though Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and the Unabomber. That story would glue some fingers to remotes.
