It's ironic that now that she's no longer "pop", she's trying harder than ever to prove her punk attitude.

"And so there I was. I was gonna go to Harvard. It was obvious. I was gonna be a lawyer and play in the God-damned system, and that was that. I was my old man. He knew, so what else could I do? I mean, there's no future in anarchy; I mean let's face it. But when I was into it, there was never a thought of the future. I mean we were certain the world was gonna end, but when it didn't, I had to do something, so fark it. I could always be a litigator in New York and piss the shiat out of the judges.

I mean that was me: a trouble maker of the future. The guy that was one of those guys that my parents so arrogantly saved the world for, so we could fark it up. We can do a hell of a lot more damage in the system than outside of it. That was the final irony, I think. That, and well, this. And "fark you" for all of you who were thinking it: I guess when all was said and done, I was nothing more than a God-damned, trendy-ass poser."

Tries to hard!

I'd argue that Rancid is pop-punk, and I say that as somebody who likes them and shelled out the dough to see them live this year.

of course you would, everyone likes to be pretentious about something.

How is that pretentious? I went to their show,

there were small children IN THE PIT. They're family friendly pop-punk.

There werent any in the 90's. When I say your pretentious I mean one of those people that take an obvious punk band like Rancid is, or in your case was and say something stupid like they are pop punk. Thats just sounds stupid. Rancid may be much different than some of the older punk bands but to say they are pop punk is pretty dumb and kinda snobbery

69gnarkill69: Well, I was also told this is punk.

Hell, she's more punk than Cyrus.

I think the ficus in TFA was more qualified to identify punk than the moron in the original story.

I will say though, that I think Miley Cyrus is pulling off here little Fauxhawk pretty well. Everyone talked trash, but that part I liked. It looks good on her. Unlike flesh colored latex granny panties.... I'd bone her if she wouldn't talk and I could wear multiple condoms.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: Yeah, punk's not about appearance.  That's what all you media-shiathead goons have got wrong for 35 years, same as all the other dumb shiat you've got wrong.

These guys never dressed up for anyone and they were pretty awesome punks:

Punk is an attitude, but it also isn't simply not giving a fark.... Hell, the poppy element of her entire music career would have incinerated any actual true element of punk that she may have had going for her.

Punk ended in the 80s. Nu-Punk, Pop-punk, and other subgenres continued onward, but actual punk? It's dead.

And if Miley is punk, I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

As further evidenced by this article, there are few easier trolls than speciously claiming something is "punk"

2013-09-23 08:57:42 PM
Some shiat head who writes for the journalistic equivalent of a College Republican Poetry Club has proclaimed Miley Cyrus "punk as fark." The Slate guy's rebuttal was far too kind. Miley Cyrus is not punk, she's just a stupid little girl who'd be jerking guy's off in the men's room at Crabby Kim's if it weren't for her daddy being a country star.

That's the saddest part, the douche on Vice who wrote the article proclaiming her "punk as fark." was being sincere about it.

Depends on how we're defining "punk" of course, but insofar as punk is an ethos and a genre, I can happily assure you there are still lots of great bands hauling their shiat around the country in econoline vans, playing basement shows, personally selling you their CDs, and then crashing on your couch later that night.

Relatively Obscure: "Miley just does not give a fark, plain and simple."

Couldn't be more wrong.

Aaaaaand we're done here. This hits the nail on the head. She may come up with the ideas, but her management team carefully researches every little move to make sure they're maximizing their earning potential. You bet your ass that if they tell her not to do something, she'll be listening. The second this whole thing will negatively impact their bottom line, it'll go away and she'll "reinvent herself." Miley Cyrus isn't a person anymore, it's a very carefully controlled brand with a lot of paychecks on the line. Market researching your actions to make sure they appeal to the largest possible audience is about as far from punk as one can get.

/But the fact that the original source of the Slate rebuttal is a terribly written article on Vice, I think we can safely just walk on by.

2013-09-23 09:35:29 PM

notyomama: Miley Cyrus is punk only if punk actually means "attention whore with daddy issues".

That sums up the first two or three waves of the Punk movement nicely, from Johnny Rotten to Billie Joe Armstrong.

You know, it's not like I'm some modern punk, dickhead! It's obviously a 1977 original punk rock look, but I guess Johnny farkface over there is too stupid to realize it!

Now stay close 'cause I don't know everyone here. There's a lot of posers. Oh, this kid, though.  This kid, he's not a frakin' poser.  He's not a poser.  He looks like a total nerd, right?  This guy looks like a geek, but his name's Mike.  He's one of the most hard-core guys in the scene.

I remember this time, he was drunk, and he got this idea in his head that all the cars on his block would look better without windows. Finally they got him in the back of the squad car. The cops thought he was on Angel Dust ("the only way he could do it") but not so, that was just Mike. He broke those goddamn handcuffs, kicked the window out of the squad car drunk, and that was it. Never got caught, either.

Now wait a minute here. I remember a lot of skanking at a hoard of shows in the 90's. Skank and Miley is a terrible comparison for those of us that still like the brass.

/at least i can pass on to my kids there is more to music than a guitar, bass and drum set or tones pumped out of a computer.
//or whatever the tv or radio feeds them.

Green Day is the musical equivalent of Hot Topic.

LectertheChef: Green Day is the musical equivalent of Hot Topic.

I heard a Green Day interview one time that said that "Time of Your LIfe" was the most punk thing they could do at that moment, since nobody expected it from them. My punk heart grew three sizes that day, and burst inside my chest, causing massive internal hemorrhaging that later caused the heat death of all punk in the universe.

The real Punks, in the 1970s, would have loved Miley Cyrus, repeatedly, on a dirty soggy mattress. Real Punks were scary people who frequently failed to live very long. They gave you the independent label. Down on your knees and kiss their vomit spattered boots.

Enjoy, you chuckle heads.

NoMeansNo is so perennially underrated that it should almost be it's own meme. I have worn out several copies of Wrong and consider getting to see them live one of those seminal moments in my brief life in all that is rock.
