NASA artificially colors all the photographs. Black and white cameras give better resolution per pound, so they only equip those. They have an algorithm where they guesstimate the color fairly accurately by the shade of grey.

They use color frequently in modern times, and i think it's probably the same weight to do digital black and white as it is digital color. But yes, many of the earlier ones were that way for that reason.

When they screw with the colors of newer color pictures they still call it 'color correction', but all they often do is use a red filter over everything.
