If she doesn't get a good sports bra she'll get a concussion.

And the dumbing down of the marathon continues.

Oprah started it.
Then it became a bucket list thing for people.
Not to mention the 26.2 stickers......

Last weekend's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me had a guest talking about his scene with Pamela Anderson on Baywatch. They were supposed to kiss. He tried to explain why he was glad they didn't while still keeping the show family-friendly.

They should never have allowed women to run marathons.

I am still amazed at how many people can fit inside one kitchen...

Running a marathon use to be a big deal.
It was an accomplishment.

Now people walk at jog one in 5-6 hours and call themselves marathoners.

I always laugh at the 26.2 stickers.
Long distance hikers routinely walk nearly that distance day after day with 20 to 30 pounds on their backs across rugged mountain terrain.

I always like seeing snobby athletes complaining about more people enjoying their pet activity. Oh no, other people are having fun outside and getting fitter!

There are people who run one marathon, put the sticker on their car, call themselves marathoners and never run again.
Then they go back to their sedentary lifestyle having checked the marathon item off their list of things to do.
No lifestyle change.

I have run half marathons in 1:07 back in the day, but have never done the full because I know the time and training it takes to actually "run" one.
Not just finish. Fark that. Plus that distance would probably beat me to shiate.

That's not as bad as other celebrities doing things in slow motion.

Fair enough. I haven't run since shin splints in high school cross-country pushed me towards swimming, which I found out I enjoy much more as a workout. I just think it's funny that people get upset about people jogging a marathon, when many Americans can't make three flights of stairs. Slowbies don't take anything away from your running times. We should encourage any and all forms of exercise, instead of working to exclude people.

I am failing to see why would be upset with people who "finish" a marathon.

What truly outraged me was when they permitted the poor to participate.  Sports are a gentleman's pastime, and if a workingman can set-aside the time to train and run in a foot race, he surely is being a slackard at his employment.  Allowing hussies with soda washed hair to race is surely a recipe for moral turpitude, as well as a grave risk to their health, as athletic exhaustion will often cause uterine dislodgement.

Hikers doing 25+ are pretty darn rare and rarely do it "across rugged mountain terrain".

But the big difference is "walking" vs. running.  Clipping along at 4 mph for 8 hours is pretty easy along a path, racing 26.2 in less than 4 is a lot more work.

I am still so confused how you can look at someone running a marathon and turn it into a negative.  I am negative and cynical but shiat.

I agree, especially because it's for Haitian relief.  Not only will it raise awareness, it will also raise much needed cash.  I assumed it would be going to PETA...  It would be great if she won.

/ 4,5 and 6 hr marathoners really need to spend more time training...

Because a lot of people do not properly prepare for the marathon.

Some people view the "just finish" goal as "participation ribbons for everyone" thinking.  I don't think they are that wrong.

I have wheeled a few. Generally finish in about an hour and 30 minutes.

Oh, you haven't seen the levels of vitriol in the Runner's World forums. You can become the victim of a virtual lynch there if you dare to suggest that completing a marathon in 5:30 is not a huge accomplishment.

"Real runners" can finish a marathon in [INSERT PERSONAL MARATHON TIME]. Everyone else is just a jogger that is tarnishing my accomplishment.

I'm not a great marathoner my PR is 3:13:20 - but if you have ever ran any marathons, you quickly realize a lot of people are out there who clearly shouldn't be attempting 26.2 - and yes I can CSB you about the times I have seen grown men and women literally shiatting themselves only 5 miles into the race.

Stick around to the 4hour+ mark and you see trainwreck after trainwreck. The sub 3hr folks have got their shiat together and they aren't clogging shiat up, hobbling en masse across the finish line, etc.
