I started smoking because I wanted to fark a very particular girl. I am pretty sure she was smoking to communicate to the boy she liked that she was old enough for him to fark.

/it's all sex at 14 and 15.

2013-09-23 06:45:09 AM
This reminds me of the "video games make kids violent" argument.

2013-09-23 06:46:00 AM
In 13-15 year old kids? You bet your ass it is a reason.

2013-09-23 06:49:04 AM
obviously

fortunately many of them don't really smoke smoke

2013-09-23 06:49:38 AM
Smoking is cool, I don't know why it is but it is. Probably early days of film pop culture.  I think there's enough pop culture imagery from the 30s to the 90s of heroes smoking to keep that going forever.

If you want people to stop smoking then ban the whole thing altogether. E-cigs aren't cool but they'll give the nicotine people crave. Don't just go around complaining that people are smoking because it's cool to smoke. You'll only make smoking cooler by making it something rebellious again.

Having had smoking adverts banned here for over a decade I forgot what it was like to see them. When I went to Monte Carlo they had huge billboards for cigarettes, it was interesting to see. Didn't make me want to smoke though.

2013-09-23 06:50:26 AM
I know a couple guys who picked it up just so they had a reason to hit on the girls who have to go outside and smoke alone.

2013-09-23 06:55:46 AM
I smoke because I like the taste of tobacco and I enjoy a good nicotine buzz. Coincidentally, those are also the reasons why I don't smoke cigarettes.

thecpt: I know a couple guys who picked it up just so they had a reason to hit on the girls who have to go outside and smoke alone.

But then you're dating a girl who smokes. Maybe if the girl likes you she'll quit smoking to hang out inside.

/and yes, that's what your mom said...

2013-09-23 06:58:05 AM
I started smoking because it was an easy way to double my buzz at the bar, and all I had to do was wait 15 mins to be back on the level.

I really only smoke when I drink though, I'm not habitual... So.. Yeah...

2013-09-23 06:59:30 AM
Boredom for me..

/tobacco free for a month
/ still a smoker

2013-09-23 07:01:50 AM
I started smoking because it let me go outside for 10 minutes and try to forget I worked at McDs.
I continued smoking because it made me feel good.
I quit because,
Well I don't remember why I quit but I'm sure it was a good reason.

Also, think about it. You're putting fire in your mouth and making it your biatch. You don't keep puffing, that fire is gone, man. Plus, you're breathing in poison and instead of dying (immediately, anyway), you're getting high on it!

What could be cooler than that? I mean yeah, pictures of people with holes in their throats. Gross. But teenagers could give a fark what happens in 30 years.

That worked so well with drugs, sodomy, and bacon.

I think I started when I was 16, pretty sure at that age anything you do is superficial.

Quit for about seven months now. Have the occasional one but haven't bought a pack in seven months.

FTFA:
Lead character Don Draper is a chain smoker and regularly fires up one of his 'Luckies', but in recent episodes he started to develop a guilty conscience about marketing the cigarettes.
One episode featured Don, played by Hollywood heart-throb Jon Hamm, paying for an ad in the New York Times with an open letter entitled 'Why I'm quitting tobacco' after they lost their million dollar contract with them.

What a pushover.

Yep. Thought that it was cool and that it would help with weight loss. Smoked about 15 years. Quit almost 15 years ago. Hardest thing I ever did.

same here, except I gave up at 35 after 20 years, 3 years off them, the cravings have all but stopped

I was fat nerd at 15, I grew an inch taller and moved half way around the world by 16, I started smoking because I wanted to be cool.

Things like that make sense at 16.

And surprise surprise, e-cigarettes unburdened by any regulations or restrictions are promoting themselves as cool and sexy too.

But it IS cool to a kid. I smoked for 22 years, have been a non-smoker for 20 years. I started exactly because it WAS cool to m at 12. I agree with someone who posted above, the only way to stop it is to ban it. However, we can't continue to tell people what they can and can't do and call ourselves a free country. Heck, we are nearing Police State status as it is.

Perhaps I should say, for the record, that I'm not in favour of such an idea, as I am in favour of making pubs and public places free to choose smoking wherever they want, flights smoking, and legalise all other drugs. I'm pretty pro-smoking for an ex-smoker, I just meant that these people who want to stop smoking never seem to come close to addressing the real issues, instead skirting around them.

Plain packaging would finally stop tobacco companies getting round the ban on tobacco advertising by marketing their products through expensively designed wrapping

Yeah that's why people start smoking -  expensively designed wrapping. I started huffing paint because Sherwin-Williams has such seductively cool can artwork.

So you probably bum them off people? I hate that.

I purposely bought a pack of the cheapest, shiatiest cigs so when someone asks for one, they're getting one.

"Yes you can have a smoke, but not one of my Marlboros...you can have this GPC instead".

You know, this may be true but we're not killng ourselves any more than persons who help it along by driving large vehicles (excess air pollution) or such things as coal-fired power plants etc, etc. so what the fark is the difference?

Only some of them. Some of them are small and make you stupid. Not that they are necessarily bad :)

That was the precise reason both of my friends started smoking when we were 14. I told them they were stupid, but they always shot back with "I can stop whenever I want to". Almost 20 years later, both of them are chain smokers that I stopped talking to ages ago. My mom is a smoker and she would have killed us if we started smoking. It wasn't an idle threat because all three of us are cigarette, drug and alcohol-free.

You really must not want to experience all life throws at you. Cigarette free is a good thing, but how can you not want to at least try out various altered conscious states?

and what are you achieving by being alcohol-free, exactly?
