I decided to read Dune again. Got to part 3 around 2am, so that was last night's lack of sleep.

I can't get my brain to shut off at night.  Seriously, if it's not some random song stuck in my head, repeating itself over and over, I'm thinking random thoughts.  I haven't had a good night's sleep in I don't know how long.  The only time I seem to sleep is on the couch with the tv on, for about 3-4 hours.  I can't seem to stay asleep longer than that.  I've tried wine, weed, and sleeping pills.   I don't like the pills and I've built a tolerance up to the weed and wine.   *sigh*   I thought it was caused by stress but I don't feel stressed out anymore.

Nothing. I'm 58, and I've managed to develop a pragmatic attitude. My Dad used to say, "No sense worrying about anything. It ain't gonna turn out right anyway." In his opinion, maintaining an awareness that you can only affect so much, and there are some things are simply beyond your control, can bring a semblance of inner calm. Also, the world, century by century, does improve. We move 5 squares forward and 3 or 4 backwards, but inexorably, we move forward. More people are healthy, more people are fed, etc. We have problems, but I think we will solve them as required.

When I have something planned for early the next day I worry about not getting enough sleep. That worry keeps me awake and I don't get enough sleep.

If I have nothing in particular planned I can get up at 5 AM, no problem.

Try MJ edibles. They are more of a relaxing body high and the buzz lasts much longer. Same problem with tolerance building up. But they might give you a good nights sleep once in a while. After eating them for 3-4 days in a row I take a day or two off.

Tried vodka? Melatonin works pretty well. It's not a narcotic, more of a supplement. That works. But mostly vodka.

I hope that doesn't cause a maudlin buzz when they mature. I'll test it for you, if this is also a concern of yours. ;)

Pain. And a doctor who is too farking stingy to give proper relief for it. So I save up 2 days worth and take it at one time, and get proper sleep that way. Otherwise, it's 2-3 hours at a shot.

/been doing it for years
/doc knows about it, is OK with it, but won't up the dose

The realization that my life as I know it is as unstable as a house of cards, that one misstep could result in financial disaster, thus ruining the lives of everyone I hold dear, just as they are beginning to comprehend their possibilities, only to have them taken away right before the moment they come to fruition

The thought that all the transgressions in  my past will damn me to eternal perdition.

That my death will be celebrated instead of mourned, and my children will feel nothing but relief at casting off the yoke of my oppression.

That raccoons are getting into the garbage again

Nothing.  Any minor signs of insomnia get dosed with 3mg melatonin.  I'm out in less than 15 minutes

Same here. I'm usually good once I fall asleep, but the getting to sleep is the hard part.

It must be a fairly common issue- besides the three of us, The Oatmeal has it too (scroll down):

Started a relationship in CA before moving out to PA for a 6-8 month project ... so naturally the anticipation when I get to see her comes up, I feel like a goofy kid waiting for some fun holiday to swing by.  Funny how monthly visits 3-7 days in length seem so short.

I've had trouble sleeping my whole life. I'm convinced that I'm, for a lack of a better term, nocturnal. I can be dead tired all day long, barely able to keep my eyes open, but right about 8-9 pm every evening, bam! Wide awake, and I'll stay that way till 3 - 4 am at least. If I try to go to bed earlier than that I'll simply wake up around midnight - 1 am, if I nap during the day it just makes it worse. Been like this as long as I can remember.

Work. The sooner I got to bed, the sooner tomorrow seems to come.
