We're running out of helium?

Short version:  Yes.

Slightly longer version: the current price is relatively low because the US government is deliberately selling off its huge reserve. Helium is produced as a by-product of natural gas extraction, and if the concentration is too low for it to be profitable the helium is just vented into the atmosphere. Once it's dispersed in the atmosphere the concentration is too low for recovery to be practical.

You guys must be a riot at kid's birthday parties.
