FTA:"There's no way Obamacare is going to be defunded," O'Reilly said. "It's not gonna happen. So why bother alienating independent americans by embracing a futile exercise?"

Because this is a politically motivated initiative created by a bunch of billionaires to cleanse corporations of any responsibly to provide decent wages, safe work conditions, to allow the dumping of toxic waste into the environment, to avoid all taxation or provide health care for their employees.

The Koch brothers have literally spent 100's of millions of dollars to buy the politicians who are pushing for the repeat of or defunding of national healthcare.

If businesses were willing to go to such extremes to avoid paying for insurance we would have nationalized healthcare (which would put them on an equal footing with most their international competition)

No, this  way they don't have to pay for insurance or the taxes that pay for single-payer healthcare.

The push to defund the national health care law has created a rift between Republicans in Congress. The House voted 230-189 Friday morning to defund Obamacare

Wow. That's a lot of "fanatics." There's 233 Republicans in the House, which means...hmmm...

Whether Republicans succeed in their effort to defund Obamacare or not, the effort is worthwhile because it shows voters once again just exactly who is responsible for the coming trainwreck that is Obamacare.  It shows again that Democrats, in their fanatical support for Obamacare, are solely to blame for it.

While that's how it got started, the continuation seems more from this particular bit of Spencerian Social Darwinism having been adopted by people prone to quasi-religious fanaticism. Even if the Kochs had a "Road to Damascus" moment and started throwing their money entirely to supporting it, they wouldn't be able to derail the GOP insanity until at least after the 2014 midterms, and more likely not before the 2016 presidential election is over.
Even by then, they might only be able to fission the GOP.

Bill O' is at least coherent enough to realize that 2012 was a pretty big mandate on America. Tanking the economy again just to show how much they hate the blah president will pretty much ensure the Republicans lose the house in 2016 as well as the presidency, even with gerrymandered districts.

"It's not gonna happen. So why bother alienating independent americans by embracing a futile exercise?"

Because, as my Republican family members have assured me, Americans just haven't gotten a chance to hear what American conservatives think. Literally all media that isn't Fox News/talk radio/right wing blogs are tightly controlled liberal propaganda which is why people generally believe that freedom and prosperity are evil and only dream of living a life of poverty.

Republicans need to send a message, and if they keep repeating the same message louder and louder over and over again Americans can't ignore it for much longer. Once they finally get to hear Republicans tell them we need to cut government, the Dems will never win the presidency again.

Besides, think of how much freer you'd be if you had no healthcare. It's an argument that can't lose.

O'Reilly is apparently confident that there can't be a teahadist backlash against him.  That raises two possibilities, I think, 1) he's about as arrogantly clueless as the people he's criticizing, or 2) he's maybe not so clueless and has good reason to believe that the self-destructive "always further to the right" teabagger thing is about to dry up and blow away.

"LED bulbs are a rapidly emerging substitute for incandescents. These can last up to 25 years and are at least 75 percent more efficient than current incandescent bulbs. And while these bulbs cost more at the moment than CFLs and high-efficiency incandescents (approximately $10 to $30 per bulb), their price is expected to drop quickly as technology improves and the supply and use of the bulbs increase."

I saw LED bulbs at Costco last weekend and they were $6 a piece and a 3-pack for, I think, $15.

Actually, many Americans want Single-Payer, a Public Option---So "But not from the government" is actually fud.

And considering what GOP candidates have said and legislated about Rape, Abortion rights, and vaginal ultrasounds, it's hard to "Disprove" that "Myth" you have going there.

And people will take Obama's plan over "Vote for us and we will tell you our healthcare plan later" nonsense.

So, three strikes and you are out in one post? The quality of GOP shills over this issue is lacking. I think even the GOP is giving up on this whole futile effort to defund the Affordable Healthcare Act now.

That makes negative sense.  The mandatory insurance requirement is to get that demographic INTO the system.  Getting them into the system will make the insurance company more money, not less.  People who pay but do not get services in return are known as "a big fat profit".  And, as pointed out, they weren't going to buy in until they desperately needed healthcare, so the payOUT is still the same, but now the insurance company gets 1-5-10-20 years of big fat profit.

O'Reilly is a condescending arse, but he's not an idiot. He knows when a battle is pointless and when to distance himself from it. He's then able to leverage that distance to try to portray himself as a centrist to the people who haven't figured out what he's about.

Most of the pundits on the right are just playing fiddle to an easy audience that wants to hear a familiar tune. But O'Reilly is the most dangerous of the bunch because he really believes that the tunes he's playing are not just what everyone  wants to hear, but that anyone who doesn't like them is a moral failure.

I think they know that healthy young people will opt to pay the yearly fine (at a fraction of what coverage would cost).

My most recent letter from my insurer went to great lengths to point out that should I drop my coverage, I'd have to pay a fine.  Translation: "Please dont leave us!"

We'll get single payer eventually.  There's no way this model can hold up for long... and then there'll be just one place to turn.

In addition to wide-spread ignorance about Obamacare (thanks for keeping us infromed, FOX!), about 10-20% of those who oppose Obamacare think it is not liberal enough.

This desperate attempt to sink Obamacare by any means necessary (fear tactics, outright lies, holding the debt ceiling hostage) is because the opponents know that when people start looking into the options, they're going to like it.

Now, sure, but after the first of the year, why?

After the first a person can wait until something happens before buying into any plan.

Until then, pay the yearly fee out of any tax refund or add it to the tax liability at tax time.

With a little caution and some luck, a person could go nearly a lifetime without ever needing insurance (particularily if they dont mind paying out of pocket for the occasional minor medical costs).

That's not how insurance works.

And minor medical costs can run into hundreds or thousands of dollars just for a few tests, never mind trips to the emergency room.

Well, except for the fact that the insurance companies are required to spend 85% of revenues on care.  That leaves precious little for profit, or executive bonuses, or "business trips" to "team building exercises" in Hawaii.  And that's why they're throwing money at the Republicans and the media to try to kill this thing.

2013-09-22 01:53:09 PM

TomD9938: After the first a person can wait until something happens before buying into any plan.

Nope.  Doesn't work that way.  Like most health insurance, there is an open enrollment period.  If you avoid getting health insurance, you can't simply sign up for it when you get sick.  You'll have to wait until the next open enrollment period before getting insurance.  After the initial open enrollment period which starts October 1st and ends March 31, 2014, the next open enrollment period is October 15th and ends December 7th.  Insurance coverage then begins January 1st of the following year.  So, unless you can time getting sick on December 7th, enroll the same day, and have something that can wait to be treated until January 1st, you're screwed.

This is how we know that the Republicans have lost the battle.  They resort to lying and taking things out of context.  They are unable to make a rational argument against the health care law so they resort to this repeated propaganda.  Baucus explicitly says that the lack of advertisement about the law and the fact that many people don't know what the law entails (largely because of GOP sponsored propaganda...see Kentucky State Fair as an example) will lead to problems when open enrollment begins on October 1st as people won't know what to do.  Coupled with red state governors actively limiting public knowledge about the health care plan, he's correct.  There will be a lot of low information individuals out there.  This is one reason why the initial open enrollment period is an extended period of time.  And, of course, Pelosi's comment rings true today as much as it rang true when she said it, "We have to pass the bill in order for you to see what's in it away from the fog of controversy."  For the GOP, the fog is still very thick, and Skinnyhead's comment further emphasizes that the GOP is unable to see through the fog.

You really don't understand how insurance works do you?

If your house is on fire, then sure, an insurance company will be happy to sell you a policy.  Since the only thing it'll cover is the already burned ashes you'll probably get a very reasonable price.

Similarly, you can wait until you're in the ER with a heart attack to buy health insurance.  It just won't cover the ambulance ride, the emergency surgery, the initial hospital stay, or anything else until your paperwork gets through someone's system and your coverage actually starts.

You should really shoot those sooner.  Those black marks on your skin are stealing your precious bodily fluids and living on the welfare of your body without contributing anything.  Those cells just don't have jobs.  Hell, Ive heard that they can grow huge.  Like if you get one on your leg it can become the size of a c antelope!  You should really stand your ground against them.

Not that I have anything against them.  I got several on me myself.  But they're just generally worthless.

Doc Lee: And, of course, Pelosi's comment rings true today as much as it rang true when she said it, "We have to pass the bill in order for you to see what's in it away from the fog of controversy." For the GOP, the fog is still very thick, and Skinnyhead's comment further emphasizes that the GOP is unable to see through the fog.

Skinnyhead can't see through the fog because it's actually a giant cloud of smoke being blown out his own ass.

Karac: TomD9938: After the first a person can wait until something happens before buying into any plan.

Plus with health insurance you need to wait till the open enrollment period which could be almost 10 months away. For even a "minor" medical issue, you could be in full cardiac arrest from just the ER bill.

Sorry to threadjack here guys, since I know this question has no bearing what so ever on the story.
But, my clock that stopped working twelve years ago, just gave me the correct time.   Any ideas how that happened?

Christ man, there have been over 40 votes to kill Obamacare.    We get it.  no one is going to accuse the GOP of being willing to do anything about the amount of money we spend on Healthcare.  They are safe.

Also, the have forever recused themselves of all and any praise for when people like it.

Well, them, the Heritage Foundation, Newt Gingrich and the insurance lobby.

But yeah, it's all the libby libs' fault.

Don't forget Romney who believed the Massachusetts plan should have been implemented nationally.

I wonder what changed his mind on that...

Or hell, just with a couple thousand bucks of charges just for the tests to even see if you have a serious issue.  Lab work is scarily expensive if you're not insured.

So.

Apparently I've lived long enough to see Bill O go from being the resident lunatic, the shrill, lying, partisan hack on FOX who embodied the worst of all the GOP's propagandists to now being their elder statesman and unofficial voice of reason.

The only one bright enough to see the writing on the wall vis a vis the GOP's continued attempts to defund ACA.

Yeah, me.

As a side note there's no way he went on air with this without Aile's okay. So that means the GOP establishment types, the old school money men are officially at war with the money men backing the teatards.

I find I'm okay with this.

O'Reilly believes what he says and is just a general slightly over the top conservative.

He's even said on The Daily Show that he thinks there are a lot of people that are just in it for the money and will say whatever they are paid to. Which I believe he was actually referring to some Fox News people.

He has said the IRS thing is dead and no proof, also now that this is also stupid.

That's why as crazy as it sounds, Bill is the voice of reason on Fox News.

Dude put out a rather sane 'these are your rights' book for kids, too. He's pretty solid sometimes.

But when a talking head is your voice of reason, you've got issues.

Well said.  I just have to wonder if, and at what point, the Tea Partiers will realize they are being used.  Are they simply not smart enough? Or perhaps too jaded to ever figure it out?

Yeah, he didn't say it was about the ACA itself, dumbass. He said it was because of concerns over whether the open-enrollment marketplaces will be ready for the projected October 1 rollout, and HHS secretary Sebelius pointed out that they are being delayed because of....lack of funding caused by Republican intransigence in Congress.

You need to read the articles you link to, and not just mine for nifty headlines.

The plan to "defund Obamacare" is not a Tea Party ploy. It is Heritage Foundation, the group that first came up with Obamacare.

Here, let me quote from the Heritage document itself:

"Defunding Obamacare means attaching a legislative rider to a "must pass" bill (debt limit, annual spending bill, etc.) that prohibits any funds from being spent on any activities to implement or enforce Obamacare."

"Won't adding a provision to defund Obamacare to a "must pass" appropriations bill lead to a government shutdown? Obviously, this will set up a major political confrontation with President Obama."

This is not Tea Party fringe nonsense, this is a full-blown attempt by main-stream Republicans to destroy the functioning of the federal government. There is nothing responsible in their politics.

Republicans aren't afraid of Obamacare failing, they're afraid of it succeeding. If they really did think it would be a colossal failure, they could wait, blame the democrats, and popularly repeal the bill.... but they know that isnt at all how it's going to go.... they're scared crapless that a bill they deigned to name after a prominent Democrat will end up being the most popular bill of the last 30 years.

Funk Brothers: Americans want better health coverage, but not from the government and they would rather the company they work for pay it for them. The majority of Americans didn't vote for Obama because of Obamacare, they voted cause the other candidates were terrible and the myth that women would be forced back into the kitchen and in dark alleys.

I would rather get the money that my employer spends on my health insurance in my paycheck, and then go out and purchase a policy on my own.  That way my employer couldn't put arbitrary limits on my health coverage based on their religious beliefs.
