came here to say something like this

2013-09-22 10:00:37 AM
I'd be upset too, if I turned my computer on and everything looked different.

2013-09-22 10:00:48 AM
Updated my son's iPad. He took it fine, in fact he was excited because he thought he got a new one. My wife on the other hand warned me of putting the update on her phone... It'll auto-update in a few weeks I told her, so she better get used to it.

Suddenly a lot of the complaining on the internet comes into crisp focus.

Seriously.  There's not much of a difference between that kid's reaction, and a big percentage of Farkers right after the redesign.

2013-09-22 10:26:12 AM

precia: I'd be upset too, if I turned my computer on and everything looked different.

Which is exactly what happened. I didn't react the way this kid did, but I sure as hell wanted to.

2013-09-22 10:30:31 AM
Am I a bad person because my first instinct at seeing that is to take away the iPad until the kid feels appreciative that I eve let him touch it?

2013-09-22 10:30:45 AM
Listen, my 4 year old had almost the exact same reaction when I wouldn't give her a bowl of cereal immediately after she had a bowl of ice cream. Kids, man.

2013-09-22 10:33:40 AM
The kid has a future as a technology writer.

This is a story that I bet CNN is running.

Fark sensationalism

I honestly cannot believe someone got paid to write this. 4 year olds cry about all sorts of stupid stuff.

You know you can stop auto-updates from taking place, right? Maybe don't force your wife to use a product she doesn't want

Yes, you are.

And I would encourage you to spread your evil, regardless of age, to any user who biatchs like that.

I made the mistake of upgrading my Ipad, and when I turned it on I wondered whether I had made a mistake and downloaded a special version for little girls.

As do most Apple users, which is why I strategically took the last few days off, but have to pull a 12 hour shift today so I am sure many iWhiners will be escalated to me.

2013-09-22 11:24:11 AM
Dad should have broken the iPad over his knee then said "Now you have something real to cry about!"

This. 4 year olds don't exactly take care of or appreciate nice things. They don't need an iPad.

Still, it's hilarious.

And yeah, it's fun seeing the things kids have a cow over. It's just how they learn.

Your kid already isn't cute. Posting a video of him throwing a fit makes him about a million times less adorable.

So much win, one intarwebs for you.

I do think it looks less impressive, more cartoony, than how it looked. Still, meh, not a big deal. I like the apps (Foreflight in particular) on my iPad.

I guess they wanted a WoW style interface.

It's actually a pretty good device for kids -- fine motor skill teaching aside

There are photo albums -- kids dig that

There are books (boynton's moo baa la la la is great, so is pat the bunny)

There are flash cards of food, vehicles, common objects and animals

Basically an iPad reasonably consolidates many things a parent would have if they had the money and storage room to keep

Are there issues? Sure -- a kid can become obsessed with the device just like any other thing (a favorite book, blanket, train, stuffed animal)

But the issues are minor in comparison to learning benefits

And let me just lay this down: it's also a pacifier -- yeah, I said it and meant it: anyone that doesn't understand that mom and dad sometime need 10 minutes to eat using both hands doesn't know what raising a kid is really like

I got my kid a Kindle Fire and then upgraded to a Nexus 7. Technically we "share" it, but it's more his than mine.

I'm not even close to a "yuppie"

Kansas ...Stopped reading there.

Well, that's basically what I think of flat design, though I avoid this particular case by not having an iPad.  Apparently 2013 is the year ugly went in to style.

No that's fine.  My first reaction was wanting to make a donation to Planned Parenthood.

Because it's the 21st century and technology changes and there was a time in the not so distant past that the idea of a 4 year old reading a book was ridiculous.

I was given books and was taught to read, along with lincoln logs, taught how to tie fishing knots, etc.  I had a yoyo and matchbox cars in my pocket.  A child being able to read at 5 is much more impressive than one who only shuts up with the digital teat is offered.

Every parent I know thinks their little child is a genius because they can play angry birds.  It is a digital pacifier which is going to lead us into even great rates of illiteracy and dumbed down generations.

If you have a four year old and have an iPad, Galaxy Tab, Kindle Fire, whatever -- it's going to be the four year old's pretty damn quickly.

Four year old, huh? That's the average mental age of the average Apple product patron anyway...

What, you mean because it will soon be entirely coated in slobber and that sticky stuff that you hope is applesauce, and you'll never want to touch it again?

You were given Lincoln logs as a child -- trust me: parents having been doing this forever

It may be true that an iPad is too easy to give to a kid -- and maybe Substituting another toy will help

But bullshiat if u think an iPad is inherently worse than any single toy

If you want to see a two year old that grew up with an iPad and knows all the states and all their capitals (and can, given a state, name the states around it) and can count to 1000 and do simple addition just speak up
