I really shouldn't like Luther. If you take away Elba and Ruth Wilson you have what amounts to a fairly standard English police procedural.

So, has he been in amovie where he doesn't sacrifice himself for the white person?

So he's a DJ too, eh? Interesting.

Ed Grubermann: So, has he been in amovie where he doesn't sacrifice himself for the white person?

In Prometheus he sacrificed himself to save our entire species. Does that count?

Thor. He even tries to kill whitey, though, technically speaking, Loki is really blue-with-red-eyesy.

I will sacrifice myself from this tread.

Ghost Rider 2. I don't know what the hell Nicholas Cage qualifies as now, but he's only a white person in appearance. He may be his own species.

How funny.  I just finished re-watching The Wire for the second time.  It's just as good the second time around.

But lemme say this...

You bastards.  After reading numerous threads on this site about how awesome The Wire is and finally deciding to get my hands on it, let me just tell you you mutha f*ckas is lucky that I couldn't remember which one all y'all talked about--whetha it was Marlo or Omar for dat big moment in Season 5.  It woulda ruined the damn show if I'da known what was 'bout to happen when it actually did happen.  So now, yo, me and all a' you? We gots us a beef.  Believe.

/that probably sounds better out loud than it looks on paper
//but seriously, don't give away that moment any more
///sheeeeeeeeit

Didn't read the article...

Why is Idris Elba so mad at this Gallagher fella? Did he smash his watermelon or something?

Just read the article and saw what happened with Liam Gallahger.  Only problem is that it didn't end with Gallagher getting an uppercut to the balls.  What a dickhead.

Eh... Luther had a great first season, a sublime second season, and consistently creepy bad guys, but it played itself out by the end of the third season. Going from Stringer Bell to Luther so convincingly proves his talent, and he's ready for a new role.

Luther
The Wire

Yeah, as I was watching I was thinking, "shiat, this guy has Clint Eastwood-level screen presence."

I haven't had the time or inclination to watch much TV in recent years.. but I've enjoyed him in 2 movies so far.

I was surprised to find he's a bit younger than me.

Ok, now... don't all shoot me at once...

Idris Elba as Roland Deschain in the Dark Tower movie.

Here's an interesting fact: you know how Detective John Munch, of Homicide and  Law and Order fame, has made guest appearances on everything from The X-Files to The Wire? Well, the BBC got into the fun once by having Luther ask to have a suspect's details to be sent to a "Detective Munch, in Special Victims Unit, New York." Which possibly means he and Stringer Bell exist in the same narrative universe. Maybe they're related?

Based on recommendations here I've started watching "Luther." I've only seen the first two but I'm not impressed. Two cases where he solves them by glancing around the crime scene, says, "This isn't right," and has some insight based on only a vague hunch, and not only was he right, but it totally solves the case. Then he goes rogue and blunt forces the resolution against orders yet nobody gets angry and no disciplinary action, despite the fact he spent 7 months on suspension for letting a guy almost die.

Oh, and for some reason he is now treating a psychopath double murderer who has tried to kill him and his wife, as a friend and confidant.

I really want to like the show but the first few episodes are so formulaic and contrived and frankly unrealistic that I'm not digging it. Does it get better? I need a Breaking Bad replacement.

Yes, Idris Elba is certainly tall, ugly, and weathered, with piercing blue eyes.

It's good. Just treat it as a brainless action thriller, only this time from the BBC instead of Hollywood. Eventually you'll see some of the creepier bad guys to have ever been on TV.

If you want stuff that borders on "art", get the Red Riding series.

Idris Elba is a very charismatic individual, regardless, Luther seasons one and two were some of the worst TV detective crap ever made. Season three is passable. He/They do end the series well in season three episode four.

As TV detective fiction goes the stories are absurd, the killers absurd, the plot devices absurd, the investigations absurd, the relationships between Luther and everyone else absurd and everyone involved has to be stupid and insane to have any of it work.

What you were watching was Idris Elba porn basically. High production values focused on a very charismatic actor, money shot after money shot, but shiat story underlying it all. A train wreck your ancient lemur brain cannot look away from.

Elba is great. Pacific Rim was great.

The "WE ARE CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE" line was farking corny as shiat.

Hyperbolic mich?

It is a great show, a bit formulaic, but all tightly written and with good pacing.

I'm waiting to see how they are going to have Det. Munch appear on Law & Order:UK.

A little overblown there, but not terribly so.  Elba is great but every villain is SO over the top to be ridiculous.
