Old bigotry had way more colorful words. Lots of punch. I remember a childhood moment where I caused quite the stir among my relatives when my German kraut great-uncle let fly with some choice ones regarding a former boss of his and I innocently asked "Uncle John, what's a sheeny?"

Of course he didn't know it was an offensive term....why, that's every racist's first line of defense.  If that one doesn't work, they move to the 2nd tier of bullshiat, which is, "I can't be racist, I have a ___________ friend/co-worker/family member/neighbor!"  The 3rd tier is pure deflection; "You're the real racist for saying I'm racist!  Only a racist would know that was a racist term."  The 4th and rarely reached tier is acceptance; "Yes, I said something offensive.  I'm sorry for being an ignorant clown in the year 2013."

Let's see which tier he lands on next.

My grandmother was born in 1918, and it was not uncommon for her to refer the black people who lived in her town as "coons" or "pickaninnies."  Used to drive my mother absolutely spare.  What's interesting is that my grandmother wasn't raised in the South; she lived in a small town south of Chicago.  She [my grandmother] never understood why it bothered my mother so much, and finally one day my mom snapped and told her she sounded like a drunken Klansman and to knock it off.  It was funny watching my 80 year old grandmother fishing for a response to that.

It's almost possible you wouldn't know "jigaboo" was a racist term, because when was the last time anyone ever used it in racist conversation--except the fact that he used it AS a racist slur means that, ipso facto, he knew it was a racist term. The only way "I didn't realize X was a racist term" could possibly fly would be if someone used the word in a non-racist context and was subsequently corrected.

So by using "jigaboo" to a black person as an insult, it means that Officer Douchebag knew it was a) an insult and b) an insult to be used exclusively to blacks so therefore c) it was racist. If he'd used it to a Chinese woman, he might have been able to slide, but not by much. Now the next question is what kind of antique hobos is this nutjob running around with that they still use "jigaboo" in their racist discourse. Do they hang out at speakeasies with flappers while sipping bathtub gin?

I find it silly that we still to this day let words carry this much weight and taboo to them. So, you can call someone every negative term in the book, as long as it doesn't have any racial connotations? But wait, everyone knows that there is still a rating system of "taboo" racist terminology. Anything referring to African Americans is automatically super super serially taboo, followed by Hispanics, Asians, etc. Racist white terminology is so low grade taboo that depending on the situation, most of the time it is allowed - even in court to be an acceptable adjective. Then you look at TV of what "acceptable" terms there exist and it is even more laughable. The officer was drunk and yelling at some black guys for apparently blowing smoke in his face allegedly. As long as his behavior is not reflected in his ability to perform his job in an unbiased manner, I don't really care. I also do not blame the PD for firing him because his words reflect poorly on the PD. The notion however, that "some" racist terms are acceptable or more acceptable than others and there is a weight and rating system is stupid however.

Only time I've ever heard the term Jigaboo was in a song by an old racist musician Johnny Rebel. Pretty hateful music and drives home the racist tone of Klan sympathizers. He pretty much denies being racist, which is amusing. I wonder if the officer in the article really sees himself as racist.

The music duo, Prussian Blue on the other hand, was a sad tale of kids being twisted by adult values, thankfully those two girls were able to out grow the reach of their racist surroundings and are quite the liberal pot smokers now.

I was in a slightly edited version back in the 80's, and there is some good music in there, plus a few scenes/lines that are comedy gold.  There's also a lot of weird drugged-out shiat.  Some of it is the same material.  I'll agree with the assessment of the movie, though; good cast, but a complete rewrite of the script and a bit too mcuh of the studio thinking they were being hip and clever.

We cut the song the earlier poster referred to because this was small-town Maine in the 80s- none of the half-dozen or so black kids were into theater and we were not going to assign that song to any of us white-bread types for obvious reasons.  We also cut "Sodomy" because we had a thirteen-year-old in the cast (one of our strongest singers, too; that girl had serious pipes) and her father said it was either the song or her.  Needless to say, both songs were sung very loudly after most of the audience was gone closing night.

We also learned about the limitations of the heating properties of stage lights vs. -40 temperatures plus wind chill when you have a rickety metal loading door at the back of your stage, but that's another story.

Heh....we saw "Hair" when I was in college and loved "Sodomy" (shut up, you) but couldn't figure out what "pederasty" was. Even in 1981 it was such an archaic term we weren't quite certain what that meant. So we looked it up in the dictionary and found that it was..."sodomy". That was when we learned that even dictionaries were sanitized for your consumption.

Why do you want to insult anybody?  And, especially, why do you want to insult someone on the basis of the racial group you perceive him/her to be a part of?

For the same reason he hopes there's a race war.

Coco LaFemme: Of course he didn't know it was an offensive term....why, that's every racist's first line of defense.

How about "I'm sorry that you were offended by what I said."

You must be from Mars to believe there isn't a race war going on. Not everyone is involved, but people are still ignorant and lack a genuine education to realize otherwise. KKK? Still exists, Aryan Brotherhood? Still exists, Black Panthers? Still exist.
Who do black panthers hate? anyone not african, who do KKK hate? anyone not white.

If that isn't true are both of those organizations at their record numbers for recruiting since 2001? But if we are educated enough to see racism is alive and well, why are we still putting up with the Aryan brotherhood and other nazis?

Gyrfalcon: katfairy: We cut the song the earlier poster referred to because this was small-town Maine in the 80s- none of the half-dozen or so black kids were into theater and we were not going to assign that song to any of us white-bread types for obvious reasons. We also cut "Sodomy" because we had a thirteen-year-old in the cast (one of our strongest singers, too; that girl had serious pipes) and her father said it was either the song or her. Jiggaboo or jigabo is from a Bantu verb tshikabo, meaning meek or servile.  Usually used among lighter-skinned African-Americans to refer to ones of very dark complexion.  Var.  jiggabo, jigarooni, jijjiboo, zigabo, jig, jigg, jiggy, jigga, jigger.

However there is some cross over.  In the mid-18th Century, jig and jigger were mining terms.

Jig - A pulley wheel in the haulage system, usually at top of an incline.
Jigger - The person, usually a lad, who operated the jig.

the money is in the banana stand: I find it silly that we still to this day let words carry this much weight and taboo to them.

Some words are more offensive in their intent, whether or not they have any racial context.

Some words are racially charged due to our unique history, especially slavery and jim crow and all that surrounded that.

To suggest that some words/terms should not be more offensive than others is naivete on a supreme level.

I didn't grow up in an overly racist town (sadly there are a lot of racists in my state still) and didn't have too many racist people around me.  The worst thing i remember is the kids on the bus calling one boy "burrito" ... and quite honestly, at the time, I didn't realize they were doing it because he was Hispanic... i really was that naive.

You clearly still are that naive if you honestly cannot see why spear-chucker was/is an insult used to denigrate persons of African decent.

Nonetheless to clarify; it is insulting as it refers to how when Europeans (as typified by the major colonial powers) encountered the natives of various parts of Africa they were able to relatively easily subjugate those populations through the use of superior technology whilst said Africans were only armed with spears and other primitive weapons.  Having given up use of the spear and the like as primary weapons several centuries earlier it was seen as proof of European superiority, much as today's iPod user would scoff at someone using a cassette tape Walkman.

JerkyMeat: That's exactly why I use the term "spear chucker" under those kinds of circumstances.  Gotta keep it under the radar.

I swear I Lol when I saw the term jigaboo. I haven't heard that derogatory word in at least two decades. And I don't remember the last time I heard yours :) Could be I found it funny that a racist redneck (and drunk) cop got fired for using it.

If I were to be on a Non-PC version of "Family Feud", I would not have won the $20k.

zzrhardy: a particular individual: zzrhardy: I used the word "nubianrdly" to describe a problem in one of our tech meetings and about half the peoples heads turned sideways with a "?".

After the meeting I looked it up - it is a much older word than the N bomb and has Norse origins so is unrelated. Kinda dropped it from my vocab regardless.

Nubian, please.

It looks like the fark word filter doesn't like words of Norse origins....

Yes, it's pretty hnøggrly with what it permits.

I always wondered if it was a corruption of the name of an African people or a local place name from which some of them had originally been taken. I have a dim recollection of older people describing local black people by putative origin, i.e. "That'un's pure Gullah, he ain't Geechee at all", which led me to speculate that perhaps "jigaboo" was similar, since it sounded more like a location than an insult.

Dancing Lindy Hop you get to hear all kinds of old music. Look up a song called 'Clap Your Hands on the After Beat'. I lost it the first time I heard it.

Sure, that sounds legit.

^^ Also fails to understand how any "creepy-ass cracker" could not know that "jigaboo" is offensive ^^

You sound tired.

I am.

Tired of double-standards, hypocrisy and politically-correct candy-assed bullshiat that benefits no one.

Well, Gullah is likely a corruption of Gola, and there are enough similarities between the language spoken by the Kissi and Geechee that it's at least a possibility that Geechee is how it ended up pronounced here over time. For all I know there's a Djigabu Bay.

Add me to the list of people who can't recall hearing the term.

The funny thing is that if I read the word without context, I would have guessed that it was a term of endearment. Words that end with -boo elicit that response from me.

I'm too sheltered to get a lot of references and obviously not much of a Seinfeld fan either since it wasn't the Bania guy who converted for the Jew joke pass. It was the dentist played by Malcolm's dad.

Maybe. The word "jigaboo" just seems so random.  It's not descriptive, doesn't sound obviously insulting. It's like you stuck three random syllables together. Thus my confusion about it as a yoot, until I thought about how many Cherokee words had entered the local vocabulary as place names after a lot of distortion to get them to fit English pronunciation.
