Yeah  bet he had a special moment while watching that.

Yeah, well, let me know when she blows up a car onstage.

I didn't get the outrage about her performance; MTV has featured raunchier acts/numbers than that over the years, so people getting the vapors over her non-existent ass twerking made me laugh.  What I agreed with the dissenters about is that she's a no-talent clown pretending to be down with the 'hood, and that's really, really annoying.  I get that she wants to run as far away from Hannah Montana as she possibly can, but she needs to realize that it made her rich, so she's never really going to get that far.  It's always going to be right behind her, shouting "Hey y'all!", just when she'd rather it shut the hell up.

As for her dad.....what do you expect a father to say?  "Oh sure, she was acting like a total skank up there.  She embarrassed me to death, and now I don't want her at my Thanksgiving table, possibly giving everyone there the Herp."  Of course he's going to defend that shiat publicly, to do otherwise would be disastrous.

I didn't watch it when it was aired because I'm an adult and I don't even know where to find Mtv on the box but I wound up seeing most of it because for a week there it was pretty hard to avoid.

It looked to me like a teenager doing an impression of what she thought was supposed to be sexy and was just trying too hard. But I didn't see anything offensive about it. I'm told the show had a TV-14 rating in the US so parents screaming about their precious children should have paid attention and monitored what their snowflakes watched instead of crying about it later.

She's not an artist, she's a commercial product.

This.  The Hollywood studio system bosses of yore were amateurs compared to today's publicists, promoters, and major labels.

If she would have grown up poor and her act was like this from the beginning people would not be saying what they are saying about a former Disney actor.
Americans do not like their Princesses acting like they have any sexuality going on or to actually act like human beings.

A month later, you're still talking about it.  That's a win.  Your only winning move is not to play.

We're still talking about this? It wasn't that she tried to be sexy--at least not to me. She was just so. damn. awkward. about it. Nobody made fun of Britney Spears and her snake.

Jesus, lady, would it have killed you to do some research at a couple of strip clubs first?

I think he meant "performance artist"

Coco LaFemme: What I agreed with the dissenters about is that she's a no-talent clown pretending to be down with the 'hood, and that's really, really annoying.

I don't think she's no-talent, but that performance was no-talent. Aside from being hysterically racist, it was flatly awful. My theory is that it was choreographed by people who not-so-secretly hate her. Terrible costuming, terrible dancing, inept blending with Beetlejuice, et al, and just completely bad. A complete failure of judgment, planning, artistry, staging, you name it. It was incompetent and embarrassing, is what it is.

The sexual elements were nothing but old hat, lamely recycled from Aguilera recycling it from Madonna. And you get tired of hearing hype about 'twerking' when it's not significantly different from every other butt-shaking 'dance' move of the last fifty years. Slapping a new name on it does not suddenly make it new or daring.

If you want to witness a worthwhile Miley performance, rent Bolt. She's perfectly fine in that. She even sings a reasonable musical number.

Lots of counter-critics have whined about Miley's right to display sexuality, which (A) has nothing to do with why it was a terrible performance and (B) has little to do with complaints about the performance. I think for every person who actually complained about Miley wearing short shorts there were three white knights defending her. Most complaints I saw were substantive, not prudish.

There may or may not be no such thing as bad publicity, but it would have taken very little effort for her managers to have produced a performance that would have generated a larger amount of better publicity. People ought to be fired for embarrassing failures like these.

Still, in any larger scheme of things -- which is to say almost any scheme of things -- it doesn't matter in the slightest. The racism is worth commenting on, but the rest of it only matters from a showbiz point of view, and, really, who cares?

This....  He really can't say or do much at this point.  She's an adult and has been more successful financially thus far than he was.

I have no problem with her twerking her ass all over the place.  One is young once after all.  Its the tongue wagging that bugs me.  Oral hygiene's important, people.  No one wants to see that nasty white-coated thing flopping around.

Not sure why Chris Hemsworth broke up with Miley. She seems to like to use her tongue a lot and likes to rub against a guy's crotch.

I'm thinking that ol Billy Ray has had a few "Special Moments" with Miley which is what set her on the path of acting like a whore.

Billy Ray's probably just happy she's in the news again.

To echo what several others have said, it wasn't that her performance was "sexualized", it is was that it was sexualized so BADLY. Her performance was awkward at best, and yet delivered with such confidence that it was intentional. There must have been who knows how many rehearsals beforehand where the various muckety mucks previewed what was going on the air and nobody said "ew, honey, just no." On the contrary, they said "oh yeah, this is what America wants to see."

Well fark you, muckety mucks. America would like its sexualized performances to actually be sexy, not this trainwreck of shiat that happens when you confuse awkward spectacle for eenjoyable outrageousness.

I love that.

Last I was talking to my mom on the phone about how COPS is back on FOX Saturday nights and I told her how I couldn't sleep one night and turned on the t.v. at about 3:00 and there was an old late 80s/early 90s episode on.  I told her I can't believe we (Gen Xers) wore stone-washed denim back and how we had big hair and all the guys had mullets.  I reminded her what a mullet was where it's short in front and sides and long in the back, like business up front and party in the back.  She remembered and started laughing so hard.

+1 for Subby

Miley's biggest error was thinking that was she did was "shocking".

Awkward? Yes. But shocking? NOPE.

After Madonna humped the floor in a wedding dress and moaned in orgasmic glee while singing "Like A Virgin" on the VMAs nearly 30 years ago, nothing short of recreating scenes from Caligula could be considered "shocking".

Her new video shows her licking hammers, straddling iron balls while naked and smashing through walls, so I guess Liam suspected that Miley was cheating on him with his brother Chris and his Avengers co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.

It would've been hilarious if, at the end, she pulled out a picture of Pope Benedict* and ripped it in half.

I think that Miley is Billy Ray's punishment for Achey Breaky Heart.  We had to suffer through that gawdawful song on every radio every five minutes, he has to deal with his daughter trying to make his geriatric heart blow up and kill this man.

Agreed. Headline was good. The amount of farks I don't give about the actual story are precisely zero.

Maybe slightly higher than that. Half a fark?

My prime takeaways from watching MC's twerky lapdance with go-go Beetlejuice were "Awkward" and "Trying waaaay too hard".

That said the reaction shots of Taylor Swift and the Smith family to the frantic fail on display on stage were some lulzy stuff and kept the entire thing from being a total waste of bandwidth.
