Airlpane ride sharing? Sounds like a good idea, but how long would that go until the commercial airline industry startrd crying about it?

/Don't travel much
//when I do it's usually not more than a couple hours by car.
///I really could use a vacation though

You know, I'm as ecologically minded as the next guy.  I bike, I walk, I take the subway.

But if you're going to get preachy about carbon emissions in the middle of an article like this, you're an ass.

from the article -

As someone interested in greener travel, I have to note that the aviation industry in general is responsible for considerable air pollution and carbon emissions. Whether Amanda's prolific ride-sharing with hobbyist pilots is greener than commercial travel is probably something that an egghead could debate for hours. On the one hand, she'shiatching a ride with folks who are probably flying anyway. On the other, she's responsible for her share of the emissions in each flight she takes.

If the plane was going to fly anyway, no she isn't, and what exactly would you like her to do?  buy carbon credits?

The author of this article is a dumbass and the article had dick-all to do with hitching lifts on airplanes and everything to do with an excuse to print that paragraph.

It sounds good in theory and for the most part the GA community is a pretty good bunch of people and very interested in safety but they also have their less than responsible pilots out there who may not have the sharpest skills or follow the rules as closely as others. There is a reason why there are gaps between GA, a commercial rating and ATP. As you transport other folks, your skills and adherence to safety likewise have to go up.

Ask any GA pilot about horror stories of encounters with other GA pilots and you will surely get an earful. I had a buddy who just landed against the wind at a small strip connected to fly in neighborhood and was still on the active runway when some bozo comes in directly over his head going with the wind, barely lands as he was running out of runway and pulls into a slot on the tarmac, steps out with a beer still in his hand. He couldn't believe it. Tried to catch him but he was gone by the time by buddy taxied over. Reported him and used the incident at the Aero Club's next safety meeting of how NOT to fly.

Hopefully this gal has her radar tuned to weed out the minority of idiot pilots out there. Hitching a ride in car vs. hitching a ride in a plane requires a more sophisticated assessment of your would be benefactor's skills and safety potential.

In my experience LSA Pilots are the worst.  I was on approach at a small uncontrolled airfield with no UNICOM, following all the rules, called CTAF, and some idiot in a LSA buzzed right over my left wing and landed in front of me.

Agreed. But I figure, she stuck it in there so she could sell the article to Mother Nature after the travel blogs rejected it. It reads like an insincere afterthought.

I've been trying to do this between towns on the Appalachian Trail (most recently between Williamstown, MA and Bennington, VT) but the airports there were too small to have anybody looking to fly when I was passing through.

FTA: "Given the countless amateur pilots around the country, why not establish an organized ridesharing scheme for folks who need to get from A to B and would like to experience a different kind of flying?"

You mean like this?:   http://www.flyshare.com/FlyshareIndex.asp
Of course, the pilot has to be going that way to begin with or it's in effect acting as a Pilot-for-Hire.
