And I'm sure the opposite has happened as well...

Something smells fishy about this.

The family contacted its doctor, who confirmed that the bleeding could be consistent with a period

I think it may be time to consider getting a new doctor.

They did a "full body inspection" of the girl

I don't understand the use of quotes there, help me out.

My girlfriend and I were playing golf a few days ago and she got hit by an errant ball between the 1st and 2nd hole.

"Well that doesn't leave a heck of a lot of room for a band-aid," said the doctor.

I dunno what's worse, the story or her parents unaware their house is being shot the fark up.

Every girl is different, but going from never having cramps to even mild cramps is a shock.

I'm going with "targeted" since the parents didn't call 911 when their car and house were shot up.

Not my home, but I was working at a 24 hour full service restaurant. I was on the graveyard shift. One night there were three of us, me, one server, and one customer, hanging out at the counter talking. At one point during that time the front window was sprayed with gunfire, behind the customer and in front of the server and I. We all stopped talking for a moment, took a look at the holes in the front window and went back to our conversation. It was some time later that the server said something like, "where else, except redacted, would something like that get so little attention?"

When I had my first, it didn't even click that I was having it. No particularly memorable cramps, and I mistook the telltale spots for skid marks or something.

May this little girl's actual first period be as mundane as mine was. Poor kid.

Yeah, when menstruating, the blood stems from your arse area.

I'm no expert on these things (after all, I'm a guy) but I'm pretty sure bleeding from the buttocks is  not consistent with menstruation.  And 10 seems a bit young for that to be the go-to diagnosis.  Seems like it would be a single-digit percentile there.

Maybe there was confusion about her fanny being the arse or the minge?

Unless I actually heard the gunshots, I think it'd take me a distressingly long time to figure out I was dealing with gunfire. At the range or in the field during hunting season I expect to hear gunfire. In town, standard evening, hanging out ... not so much. Context, baby.

okey wait... so the bullet hole was small enough to miss? But there was enough blood to make the family think that she was on a period. So then where was the blood coming from if not that hole? Because if blood was pouring out of a hole you can trace it. i call BS on that.

Yeah, 10 is a bit young, but not unbelievably young.
And I know families' notions of bodily privacy differ, but I would find it odd if a girl's sudden nighttime bleeding from the panties area warranted immediate detailed inspection from parental units.

Girls of a certain age are often squeamish about their down-there, and not all girl scout troops subject their members to the feminist floor mirror lesson. Public schools don't cover it either, AFAIK.

Ya know, if they missed the admittedly "very small" entry wound, and they didn't mention an exit wound, maybe the bullet lodged somewhere in her lady parts, causing internal bleeding that exited in the most gravitationally available port, the vagina. That'd be the only way I think they could mistake it for a period.

2013-09-21 03:28:50 AM
If I had an almost teenage daughter that woke up in discomfort and was bleeding down there I would instinctively think she was starting menstruation.
On the other hand, if I heard <BOOM> "Oww! daddy daddy!" and went in and she was bleeding my first thought would not be menstruation.

This.

 They seem to have immediately called 911 as soon as they realized it was more serious. And they took the time to keep checking into it despite the first doctor's advice.

 Look, parents aren't omnipotent. Seems like they did the best they could and did end up getting the right answer on the same day as the incident. (Which for our medical system, is pretty farking impressive.)

/my cramps hurt like hell.
//even the first round
///so much blood, everytime. ugh.

Pretty much this.  This isn't a "parents of the year" case at all.   The first call to the doctor means the family (mom?) thought something was unusual.  If you really think it's her period, you don't call the doc.  So they obviously had concerns.    Perhaps they didn't adequately communicate those concerns to the first doctor ... but it's just as easy to believe that they were emphatic about it, and the doctor dismissed them anyway.

/I don't get cramps
//The first few days aren't heavy or bright-red either, more brown spotting
///But I do realise not all women are the same, so if I had a 10yr old daughter with painful, heavy, red bleeding ... who was saying it was her period, I'd probably assume she was right.

My people used to make the menstruating gals move outside the camp when they had their periods. Apparently, it worked pretty well until the white people killed us all.
