I passed up on the chance to to buy AOL in the late 80s, right after Steve Case took over, because I felt there was no future in dialing-up to bulletin board systems.

In the long run I was correct in that assessment. But I missed making a fortune in the process.

If it were easy to know what would make money and what would fail, no one would ever "get rich" off a serendipitous investment.  Those who benefited would just "stay" rich.
