Man, Putin would have to pose with two cute puppies to cancel out the bad press from killing Greenpeace activists.

studebaker hoch: "The safety of our activists remains our top priority and we are working hard to establish what is facing them," said Ben Ayliffe, head of Greenpeace International's Arctic oil campaign.  "They have done nothing to warrant this level of aggression and have been entirely peaceful throughout," he said.

You can tell that to Putin.  He may only take your ship.

Bad press? He'd be a farking hero.

Dear Putin,

Chain them to the rails and sink the ship

Sincerely

The rest of the world.

Every stinking time I think I have completely written off Putin as a vicious, authoritarian thug, he goes and does something that makes me want to cheer loudly. The only thing that could make this better is if he turns their ship into a whaler with state of the art harpoon guns, and sells it to Japan, just to rub their faces in it.

He would have to eat a whole box of puppies to cancel out the good press.

Isn't their ship called the Rainbow Warrior? I can see why Russia would have a problem with that. (Not that there's anything wrong with it).

So 30 Greenpeace members were taken into custody.  23 Greenpeace members will stand trial for assorted crimes.  15 Greenpeace members will be sentenced to lengthy prison terms.  5 Greenpeace members will be paroled and returned to Greenpeace as a show of mercy.  Putin: "Where are the others? What others?  Those are the only ones we have and now you have them. If any have been lost, it isn't our fault."

Putin has probably already killed half of them, with his bare hands.

They have more than one ship.

Perhaps not anymore.

cgraves67: They might get their crew members back if they lawyer up before heavy winter hits the Siberian gulags, but Russia will probably scuttle their ship on a coral reef populated entirely with endangered species.

Pretty much this.

I'm sure Greenpeace knows it too. Perhaps that's why they're asking for the crew and ship -ask for more than you expect, so the other guy can cut things and you still win.

And let's be clear, the return of the crew would be a win. The return of the ship would be a miracle.

alice_600: Headso: I agree with some of the above posters, if these people are using civil disobedience and interfering with oil exploration as a protest they should be killed.

Hell I'm surprised we're even hearing about it.

Putin wants to gloat a bit.

"Greenpeace thought they could scare us. They're now role-playing something from a Solzhenitsyn novel. We will free them in February.

Of 2038."

I'm sure their ships are eco friendly. Probably burn through more fuel in one trip than Ill use in my life.

If theF french can get away with it with only 2 years in jail and a resignation of a minister, then Putin should be fine.

Who, at Greenpeace, thought this was a good idea?

"Let's board a Russian oil rig to raise their awareness!". Ok, I'll be right behind you. In Utah, or as far from the ocean as I can possibly get.

Maybe they can raise the awareness of the North Koreans next.
