Shoegaze is great. I listen to it when I don't have the energy for post-punk.

2013-09-20 04:10:02 PM
It even beat out dubstep, interesting

2013-09-20 04:14:19 PM
Dubstep is under rated. I'm a 45 year old grandpa who grew up on acdc and megadeth and i love the stuff. gotta have subwoofers or it sounds stupid.

2013-09-20 04:16:17 PM
worst genre is house
just kidding it's emocore, but house is pretty farking horrible
and nu-metal is a fake genre that was invented to put bands you don't like in by metal elitists

2013-09-20 04:17:18 PM
J-Pop and K-Pop subby?  Are you really grasping at straws that badly?

Should've gone with "Any David Hasselhoff music" instead. XD

2013-09-20 04:18:12 PM
NWOBHM belongs nowhere near that list, subtard.

2013-09-20 04:19:28 PM
I'm a 42 yr old grandpa, and I think dubstep is annoying, with or without subs. To each their own. I listen to music others sneer at.....

But I do dig shoegaze and math rock and sludgecore.

I'm always on the prowl for more shoegaze. What bands?

I STRONGLY dispute the listing of one of those genres.

Specifically, Alt-Country. Sun Volt is fantastic!

I can't believe people put this much energy into worrying about what other people like.

/nu-metal was fun when I was a teenager. That is it's target demographic after all.
//listen to dubstep all day every day.

2013-09-20 04:24:00 PM
I try to go back and listen to Staind and Limp Bizkit sometimes, but jesus christ I always realize how terrible those lyrics were and how ridiculous I was for taking them seriously as a teenager. For some reason though, some Korn and Deftones tunes still hold up well for me. I enjoy the music and most of their lyrics don't bother me as much.

2013-09-20 04:25:59 PM
If I may play Devil's Advocate here, I will argue a few points: Nu-Metal was a damn good starting point for a teen in the late 90's=early '00's to work into real better, metal. It's at least deserves more legitimacy as genuine rock than eye-shadowed, blush-wearing hair bands.  Also, if TFA is gonna complain about "sexism", I'm pretty sure that applies to a lot of more respected genres, and almost all of rap.

/yes, the more rap flavored ones sucked

There is no farking way you can put System of a Down in the nu-metal camp. No farking way. System was just really, really good hard rock.

Who is the band in the last photo? I want to say Mudvayne...I vaguely remember that appearance from the VMAs or something.

2013-09-20 04:27:03 PM
I hate musical OCD where everything has to be categorized to an annoying extent. I have three genres of music: music that I love, music that I find inoffensive, and music I actively hate. There's just too much good stuff out there to get caught up in genres. What really matters if it is well done. Hell, I'm even a sucker for a well written and produced pop song.

Either Subby thinks only American music should be popular in Japan and Korea, or he thinks they were invented for Americans and never quite caught on. I can't be sure of what kind of stupid we're dealing with.

2013-09-20 04:29:58 PM
Wait there are other types of music outside both Country and Western.

Korn was pretty cool, but the entire rest of the Nu-Metal thing can go straight to hell.

as bad as Nu-Metal was, that article was pretty bad. I can summarize it much better: Music for douchebags who simultaneously revel in their douchebaggery and whine about being called out for their douchebaggery.

I guess I'm old because I have no idea what any of those genres are.

I dunno if Linken Park is Nu Netal. Their first album was pretty good.

2013-09-20 04:42:55 PM
I tried to take that article seriously til the author gave credited to the Strokes for rescuing guitar rock.

A couple of those bands were ok, some just plain sucked, it's like any other genre of music...

2013-09-20 04:43:56 PM
also, Crunkcore is the worst genre.

you're welcome.

the whole Garage Rock thing from the early 00s seemed like a conscious attempt at recreating the Alternative boom from a decade prior, but with Nu Metal standing in for Hair Metal.

SOAD is the worst, with their atonal carnival barker of a frontman. That guy is unlistenable.

It's Deftones' inclusion that pissed me off. Their run from White Pony 'til now has them in strong contention for best rock band of the millennium so far.

It is Mudvayne, and the idiot who wrote that crap-tastic article should be ashamed of himself for including their photo. Labels aside, they have some solid musicianship and talent in that group (especially on earlier albums. Ryan Martinie (bassist) is absolutely incredible:

Fall of Troy is EXCELLENT. Dillinger Escape Plan goes from "awesome" (Milk Lizard, which isn't very Math Rock-y) to "WTF am I listening to" (Destro's Secret, which really is just stacked noise).

2013-09-20 04:48:21 PM
Alt-country is better than subbies favorite genre.

2013-09-20 04:48:49 PM
Pretty sure what ever the hell you call Keith Urban style Country is the worst genre ever. Wuss Country? Feminized Country?

2013-09-20 04:49:22 PM
The writer of that article sounds like he lost his g/f at an Ozzfest. Not sure why people seem to feel the need to worry about what other people listen to.

/also people who complain about rap and rock have never listened to Rage Against the Machine
//also must not listen to a lot of stupid hip-hop lyrics in most hip-hop ever since 2000

LD50 is a fantastic album (might be one of my desert island CDs), and it always makes me die a little inside to know that each successive album has fewer and fewer good songs.

2013-09-20 04:50:04 PM
I also predict that Shoegaze will replace Indie as the catch-all term for underground music.

2013-09-20 04:51:21 PM
There are plenty of terrible bands in nu metal. Hell, nu metal in itself is sort of a misnomer, a conglomeration of differing opinions on where to put certain bands and sounds. Emo and screamo bands, are they nu metal? If a band has a half-rap sound on one song, are they nu metal?

That being said, that article was horrible. I find it a larf that the comments section is just ripping the quality of the article and the magazine that hosts it. Though she correctly notes Reznor assigned cookie monster singing to nu metal (he did), the context of it is all wrong. True cookie monster singing is really expressed in black and death metal sounds, noted for the three singing archetypes of growl, scream, and clean.

Likening the genre of nu metal to misogyny is another distortion, since quite a number of nu metal bands sport female band members, many more than bands of other metal sub-genres.  You think nu metal is any more misogynistic than its grandfather Heavy Metal? I'd be hard pressed to find any feminist messages coming out of that genre.

The concept of "pan metal", metal not being married to one genre and borrowing from all sorts of musical styles is probably the best that nu metal had to offer. There are a myriad of bad bands in there, and quite a few good bands. Face it. Van Halen was a relatively heavy band, but Korn is a heavier sound. Does Korn "win" then? Is there any winning when you like a particular band or sound over another? It's easy to take cheap shots and cherry pick the bad in a group and use that anecdotal evidence to describe the whole. But it's probably better to say "I don't like that; it's not for me" than to be a pretentious douchebag by calling others out for the same crime.

But it's your article. You write what you want to preach to the choir, I guess.

I couldn't get past the part about Deftones and System of a Down being Nu Metal. How young is this writer?

I don't either, though a lot of people seem to equate any Indie band that utilizes an effect pedal as Shoegaze.

No, don't you get it? This is the internet. Everything has to be either a) The most awesome and revolutionary thing since The Big Bang or complete, uttter crap that doesn't deserve to be wiped. Otherwise, nobody pays attention to your pre-adolescent musings.
