Afghanistan used to be a nice place until the Soviets and the US got into their dick waving competition over it.

I would snark about how much of a authoritarian hellhole Afghanistan has become except that the US has slid just as far Both have official state religions (Islam in Afghanistan & Secularism in the US), and thought crimes againt either are severly punishable. In Afghanistan it is more "deathy" but in the US it is more drawn out and torture-based.

Me, I'm takin' the 'A' train outta here.

A lot of great things in this world are crushed by Totalitarian movements (of all stripes).

/I still play "Don't get around much anymore" with bands...awesome song that transcends genres easily.

It was an amazing place. Very progressive, hippies and the hip liked to vacation there, 1960s Arabian Nights Mod thing going on. Pretty Afghani girls wore the latest fashions instead of goddamned tablecloths with eye holes.

Lebanon used to be a really happening place as well. fark.

Had a friend who had to leave the country once the Soviets invaded.  Went to Pakistan, tried to get into Germany but ended up in New York and then San Francisco.  Learned a lot from him about Afghanistan and Islam.  Great guy and loved to feed me for free at his restaurant.  After three girls that he doted on he finally got the son that he wanted.  He almost cried when the Taliban blew up the giant Buddha even though he was Muslim.

My CSB is showing.  Sorry!

No worries.  I actually found the story to be pretty interesting.

He also played a bunch of places all over the middle east: Baghdad, Tehran, etc and even wrote an amazing album about it.  He was an amazing ambassador for the US over there and left a great impression of a country that most feared were just capitalists and racists (who?).  And look who got the cover of Time Magazine.  Right.

Pretty much this.  Kabul was actually a relatively progressive and secular place for a while - women wearing western clothes, academia was celebrated, wealth was embraced, signs of democracy, people were more outspoken - it just slid backwards for the last 30 years, in no small part due to foreign involvement.  Duke Ellington playing in Kabul today, now THAT would be impressive.  Cuz you know, he's dead and all.

I'd rate this higher on the troll-o-meter but it's simply more baffling than anger inducing.
