I never understood people who get this drunk.

Doesnt it stop being fun once the world starts spinning?

self medicating isn't about catching a buzz and having fun. its about killing the pain [mental or physical] and some people need to get to the passed out stage.

It's not uncommon for lifelong heavy drinkers to reach that limit and still be functional.

Also, drinking can be competitive.  You're drinking fast because you're thirsty (drunk logic) and you don't want to be the "weakling who can't hold his liquor."

Eh. Not impressed. Call me when she hits .480 and can still walk and have intelligible speech.

I hate this whole esteem thing where standards are lowered so everyone can be a winner.  In my day drunk was a solid 0.10 and five times the limit was 0.50 the same as non-alcoholic beer a real challenge.  No to let every one win the dropped the standards.

In my past life that was me. It was all about killing the pain of life. I am much better now.

Tolerance.  A seasoned alcoholic can drink an amount that would kill a first time drinker and still (somewhat) walk away.

As stated above, your mistake is thinking it's about fun.

I'm no alcoholic (though I know a few) but there's been a few times in my life where the goal of drinking was to get to a place of oblivion as fast as possible.  When you get there, the spinning room is just a side effect not the main attraction.

People tend to forget that whatever problem or situation made them drink, it'll still be there when they sober up.

My brother in law's ex wife made him take her to the hospital for chest pains. They smelled some alcohol on her breath and included a bac in her blood tests. She was .33 and didn't even appear the slightest bit drunk. The quack told them that she must be a heavy drinker as a normal person would likely be unconscious or at least not functional.

turns out she was downing 2 fifths of vodak per day and had quite the tolerance. he divorced her (not for the alcoholism) and she is now clean and sober for a few years.

I had an ex-roommate who maintained a very BAC, afternoons & nightly.  He also lived in a state of blackout most of the time and wasn't a fun guy as a result. ("What the hell happened to my car? You were with me, right?")
He'd picked up most of his pain in childhood and Vietnam. Pretty sure he's dead now.

Am I wrong in reading that, for her, the legal limit is one fifth?
