Live in Meriden for over 50 years. Live down the street from Les' now.

I grew up there too.  Other side of town though.  Actually, lots of places in town at one time or another.  My mom is still there.  We're roughly the same age, probably know a lot of the same people.

You're missing out on prose like this: "If roads could talk, they would yell to drivers of these cars to never leave the house without a paper bag over their heads."

That's what they wrote about the Subaru Impreza. It is also a good sample of the quality of the rest of the slideshow.

I don't think the Subaru is ugly, just bland and generic. It looks like any Japanese car from five years ago.

I liked a lot of those cars. You're ripping on a Smart car? They look kinda cool. And that little Fiat, also cool. The Veloster is also cool. If I was in the proper demographic for those I'd gladly own them.

And if you're going to rip on the Honda design then you need to rip on the Acura stuff, they look like boats for god's sake.

2013-09-19 11:12:06 PM
F*ck you, Boston Globe! I love my Veloster. It's just enough car for me not to kill myself in, and others. Well, for now.

It's a perfect car for the price.

No idea what it's like inside, but the outside does look very cool.
No argument about the impreza. I love my sti, but I bought it because it's stupid fast and turns like a damned centrifuge, not because of the dubious styling.
The Smart? It ain't good looking but I can see the appeal.
Prius? Ok. That's f*ckin ugly. Just nothing likeable about the new version at all.
And the Honda CR-Z? Shenanigans! That's a great looking car, probably the most distinctive honda in 10 years.
Kia Soul? *shudder* No. Do not want.

Kia Soul

Careful, man, those gerbils will farking cut you.

2013-09-20 01:06:11 AM
They're absolutely right about the Prius though. I am surrounded by them on a daily basis... or more accurately zip past them on a daily basis, and they are universally butt-ugly. They look like a Pine Derby car made by a kid who really didn't care.

2013-09-20 01:21:22 AM
My wife has a white Soul. It is affectionately named "Toaster." It's handy enough, but I really don't like driving it.

Sometimes I think Honda believes that the Prius might not sell as well if it were no longer so distinctive and fairly ugly. But holy hell, the original is a work of art compared to the plus-size version they sell now.

Obviously the list fails by omission of the Nissan Juke.

Just so happens that I own one of the cars on this list. (Or an earlier model year's version.)

And of every car I have ever owned, it receives the most compliments and enthusiastic questions from people who wanted to know more about it.

I have a feeling this article informercial by  Crissinda Ponder of Bankrate.com will go down as one of the 10 crappiest articles infomercials of 2013.

And the Boston Globe will go down as one of the shiattiest newspapers of all time for running idiotic dreck like this, provided free of charge by companies who spent five minutes figuring out how to linkwhore and get their name and URL printed online.

2013-09-20 01:53:38 AM
The CR-Z wouldn't look so bad if they let the guys who designed the front end also design the back end. The back of a CR-Z looks like the same farktards who designed the back end of the Prelude had at it.

Wrong about the Veloster.
Wrong about the 500.
Wrong about the how to infuse humor into your "top 10" list, blogtard.

Side note: I've never understood the appeal of the Smart. If for no other reason than if you're going to give up safety, power, comfort and carrying space, the very least you should expect in return is mileage better than 34c/38h (which is the advertised MPG, so you know it's not really that good). You can get much more versatile, better looking, bigger cars with the same or better mileage for roughly the same price. Why would anyone buy a Smart unless their biggest worry was crowded street parking?

I agree, I like it too.  In fact, none of those are cars I'd say were ugly, though some are maybe a bit overstyled or quirky.

The Nissan Juke, now that's an ugly car.  The new Lexus lineup also has weird insect faces.

The 'easy to park' city car thing is the biggest appeal IMO.  FWIW, they're pretty roomy inside for the two occupants they allow.  Since the Fiat 500 came out though, which is also very easy to park, has a back seat, gets better mileage, and has more power, I'm not sure why anyone would go with the Smart though.

I was thinking the same about most of those cars, with the exception of the two boxy ones, which looked like Japanese domestic cars instead of their usual exports.

2013-09-20 02:09:49 AM
I pretty much disagree with the entire list.  Basically it boils down to "different = ugly".  I love the Cube.  It's like The Flintstones come to life.  I like the CR-Z.  The Smart is what it is.  I'm not offended by the C-Max.  The Fiat's cute.  The Veloster looks exotic from the back and "meh" from every other angle.  But not ugly.  Nothing wrong with the Lincoln or Impreza.  The Soul's kinda funny looking.  Okay, the Prius model they picked is pretty fugly.

I guess they had to stretch to find things to call ugly now that the Aztek is gone.

The crack about driving an eco-friendly car meaning that you give up style is emblematic of why we can't have nice things in this country.

Say what you like about the Smart ForTwo Coupe.....so I'll say what I like.

I saw one the other day.  It definitely looks different enough to attract attention.

It had the logo of a local brewery on its doors.  Those bastards may not have a red bike, but they do like to show off being green.

I bet it's very easy to park.

And really, 99% of the time I'm just hauling my own ass around with maybe some groceries or beer and maybe 1 passenger.  It can definitely do the job.

With a couple of exceptions (like the Kia Soul) most of those were no uglier than anything else I see on the roads these days.  Why isn't the Escalade on that list.  That is a farking ugly vehicle.

If you want a beautiful car you'll have to go back at least 35 years and probably more.

The thing that kills me is i>why doesn't the Smart get 45 or 50 MPG? I had an '88 Honda Civic that got better mileage than those things, FFS.
