Not saying I've ever done this, but it could be really amusing to toy with the "display name" string in a large enough phone system. Adjust the spelling of names to be more interesting. Rename the CEO "F*ckwad Von Dildoslurper" for a couple hours.

I've called in and won a few radio phone-in contests. So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies. Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about. But trust me.... You don't. I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about. This is how bad info gets passed around. If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do. Cuz some Farkers believe anything they hear.

It is not clear what, if any, technology was used to jump ahead in the call queue.

They got nothing.

Somebody I might know did this a few times with a Lucent Definity G3si PBX and associated autodialer.

The same person may have also changed outbound caller ID to a friends house phone and called his cell claiming the front door was wide open and the place had been ransacked.

Good times. ;)

I was going to see how much I could screw with the American Idol voting a few years ago. We had 14 PRIs coming in and maybe two or three active calls at any given time. Never actually tried, though.

It's a trap! Maybe, or a dialer. I have a couple ten thousand voice channels I could use. You are correct though. I couldn't set it up, but "we" could.

Note: C100 is owned CTV News' parent company, Bell Canada. Bell Aliant is controlled, but not owned by, Bell Canada.

What happened to that rule "contest not open to employees of the company, its, subsidiaries or its affiliates" that's supposed to discourage these shenanigans?

Of course with Bell owning so much shait (the radio station, the TV network reporting the story and the phone company!)  I guess there would be very few people qualified.

Let's not forget the government too. Pols love those campaign contributions that keep the playing field tilted in the imcumbant's favor.

I enter every single Time Out competition there is, and I've never won anything. I reckon they're a con in some way. It's the only explanation.

I was the 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th caller in a radio call-in contest once, and won tickets to a contest I didn't want to go to.

Better Call Saul

2013-09-20 09:39:36 AM
in our station cluster - when a listener calls the 800 line, the call will forward to one of four ringdown local numbers in the studio that the jock can answer.  on my station - we have a feeling there are a few listeners that know or have figured out the right ringdown number and dial it directly (bypassing the 800 queue) and getting an advantage.  we've stopped taking our winner from that number - we'll use one of the other three lines instead.

/take that prize pigs
//i should call the telco and have the numbers changed, but i have enough to do

When the National Guard migrated MS Exchange to big army, we had to go to a centeral database to update all our info. I decided my title should be "High Lord Regeant" instead of Sys Admin. It stayed that way for about a week until my colonel noticed and informed me that I was, in fact, NOT a High Lord Regeant.

Back in the landline days, some prize pigs actually had 5 or 6 separate telephone lines at home. They (and it was usually a family operation) would monitor several radio stations, and when one announced "prize goes to caller 35!" the entire family started speed dialing that station. Most radio stations I worked for kept a list of prize pigs, and per contest rules, winning anything kept those pigs out of competition for 90 days.

/And no, the DJ does not actually take 34 individual calls to get "Caller 35, you're a winner!" It's actually more like "You're Caller 5," next caller is "Caller 10," the next is  "Caller 23," etc. It's busy in the control room, and ain't nobody got time for answering the damn phone 35 times.

2013-09-20 12:45:18 PM
I used to produce a morning radio show---number one question is "why can't I ever get through when there is a contest going on?" depends on lots of things---station delay m(ours was 12), cell phone vs. landline, and prize pig losers who have nothing better to do than call in from their landline because they are unemployed. Also, I answered all of the calls for our contests so the morning crew could hassle with board op and control room issues. We always took caller seven.

our station (almost) always takes caller #10, and I do go through and answer the phones "hi - caller #1 - sorry", "hi - caller #2" and so forth.  in a four minute song, i usually have enough time to answer 10 calls, tape and edit my bit with the winner, and get their information for the prize.  the only times i don't have enough time is when the winner starts asking "WHAT DID I WIN?" in the middle of the bit and i have to edit it out or they forget their address (happens more often than you think)

i do sympathize if you have to take 35 calls though - i would most certainly take a shortcut or three

/radio's still real to me dammit

Yes, it does take a bit of time to get the winning call taped, edited for playback, get their info, etc. and have it done before the song's over. It's especially fun when you're working an oldies station where the songs are about 2:30 long. We almost never went past caller 10, though I do recall hearing one idiot DJ ask for Caller 102 -- because the station was Rock102 or something along those lines.
