so, is offend the same thing as upset? Because I think there is a difference. I think this will upset some people, for sure, but that is because their eyes will be opened to something that is hard for them to fathom.

offend? Maybe there is a small portion of crazy aryan brotherhood KKK people that will be offended but they are a very small minority.

That's a good point.  Slavery was awful, but it was also a long, long, time ago.  It wasn't us, our parents, our grandparents, or even our great-grantparents who were around for it.

Feeling some shame about what we've done since, such as segregation and the continued marginalization of the black community that's led to generational poverty, higher risks of becoming the victims of crimes, and lower chances of financial and educational success, well, that's still pretty valid.

There's a sizeable percentage of people in the South who maintain that the Confederacy seceded for reason of State's rights, even though the secession statements from many of those Confederate states explicitly stated that their reason is to preserve the institution of slavery.

Those people are scary historical revisionists. Worse - there's a lot of them in the government as Congressmen or Senators or Congressional aides (remember Rand Paul's aide, the Southern Avenger)?

This movie will offend those guys.

Hee, hee, hee. I think I'll buy a couple of its DVDs, mail them to some conservative friends, like one who currently leads a group of Civil War re-enactors of a Confederate unit. He's not fond of African-Americans, and he's not even originally from the South.

I certainly hope so. Maybe, just maybe, it'll open their eyes too.

Over in Winchester, TN, a Confederate cemetary holds the graves of known and unknown soldiers from those awful Civil War days. I'm not too keen about them flying the Stars & Bars over it, but it is what it is.

However, I'm really not pleased the Tennessee Sons of Confederate Veterans put up a big memorial stone saying the soldiers died trying to stop "Northern agression." Really hate revisioning history. They died fighting to keep and expand slavery, whether they knew it or not.

For it to open their eyes, they'd actually have to go out and watch it. Never going to happen. God forbid some bit of information conflicts with their preconceived ideas. No, it'd be far easier to simply lob attacks at it from afar having never seen it at all.

Grew up in Louisiana and half of the people I know seem to believe that not only was slavery not such a horrible thing but that it was actually good for society.  And I am talking about what may seem like normal people to most at first; they pretend not to be racist because it is the right thing to do but get a little alcohol in them at one of their normal lack of diversity gatherings and you find out their true nature.

Now some of you may say that the previous statement may seem a little dramatic but I was holding back on the reality that is life in the south.People in my own family talk about the south rising again and making life right and proper; and what they would like to do with people of African ancestry at is best is send them back to Africa. These are people who are Doctors, lawyers, teachers etc.

But I was told by reputable people on the internet that slavery wasn't as bad as it's made out to be, the South only kept slaves because they themselves were economic slaves to an oppressive North, and that given the chance, a lot of slaves chose to fight in defense of their Southern benefactors because the alternative was a godless, industrial fascism.

Sure, but it does seem an important commentary on our society that many Americans become offended when ANY negative part of American history is openly discussed as if the bad stuff should just be ignored. And if you think it's only a "small minority" then you're fooling yourself.

I guarantee you that at some point on Fox News, this film will be described with the following phrases:

It's from the "blame America first" crowd.
It's "liberal propaganda."
It doesn't "tell the whole story" of the South.

I concur that there are a lot of people in this country that cannot think of this nation in any type of negative way.  American exceptionalism runs deep.  I guess they do not study the histories of the Axis countries during WWII.

Actually, in the grand scheme of things, 150 years is not that long ago.  And the aftermath of slavery, i.e. the pre-civil rights days was definitely not that long ago

A white lawyer eventually got the guy off. White legislators ended slavery and over 2 million mostly white people died in order to uphold the law. White people put together and passed the Civil Rights Act. White people send billions of dollars in aid to non-white countries every year.

If anything, this movie will serve to reinforce my opinions that white people are generally pretty awesome.

Don't forget that white people went to the moon, invented the internet (thanks, Al Gore!), and killed a bunch of Indians. We're not just awesome, we're SUPER-awesome!

They are ignoring all the nice slave owners who gave their property some quality food, warm beds, education, beds with wet spots, meager food rubbed on and eaten off their bodies, sex education, warm beds smothering their talkative mouths, long and cylindrical food penetrating their bodies, no time with meddling teachers, psychiatric care/trauma, beds with cozy ropes and food that rotted in the guest room after Minnie the Moocher died from internal bleeding.

It was quite nice.

It reminds me of that movie "The Patriot".  The black people on Mel Gibson's plantation weren't slaves they were employees! Yeah, that's the ticket!  I guess the moviemakers couldn't dare have their hero be a slaveowner even though it was completely ridiculous.
