Sometimes I wonder if we're living in a movie, and Putin really is just the ultimate 80/90s badass villain. Dictator of Russia, badass martial artist, wrestles bears, hunts tigers shirtless in the Siberian winter, has his own motorcycle gang, flies planes, used to be a spy, is probably a KGB cyborg who doesn't age....

The villain always has to be cooler than the hero, after all.

I love that this news comes out less than a week after Putin rips the U.S. - in our own leading newspaper - for our "exceptionalism."

I mean, you can't get lower in international respectability than being a thuggish dictator, with political adversaries in prison and dying of mysterious radition exposure...and then you try to carry off an attitude that OUR system is somehow mediocre?

I think I read that the Pravda (paper, NOT website) didn't even have the stones to carry McCain's comeback article. If Putin's system of a timid press (and let's not forget their openly discriminatory stance against homsexuals) can't even equal our MEDIOCRE system, then where do you think Russia falls in that pecking order?

I feel like there's a joke to be made here that the only other guy qualify to do the job is Satan and he has no interest whatsoever in trying to government the shiatshake that is Russia.

Is Putin really a bad guy for Russia?

Sure, Democracy not existing sucks ass, and sure, the human rights abuses are deplorable, but are Russians having better lives under him?

I'm sure he's doing a better job of looking out for ordinary citizens than a McCain or Rmoney would have done, for certain.

This can also be asked of former dictators Saddam Hussein, Hosni Mubarak, and current dictator Bashar Assad.

Yes, it sucks that they are heavy handed pieces of shiat, but without these strongmen would the countries be in better or worse shape? Doesn't a strong central leader provide a stability that allows for tranquility while keeping radical factions at bay? Left to their own devices, the citizens of these countries would turn them into theocracies with much worse human rights than under the secular dictators.

He knows he's created such a corrupt, criminal, autocratic, fear based system that not remaining at the top of that system puts him in danger. Even if he tries to retire the others that come after him, who will be made from own mold, will likely still consider him as a threat.

Pravda the paper is the official organ of the Russian Communist Party, which is more-or-less pro-Putin, and isn't in the habit of printing anything they disagree with, as it's an explicitly ideological outfit. Neither they nor pravda.ru are really equivalents to the NYT.

That reply didn't seem to take any thought whatsoever. You really don't have any good bait tonight?

For some in Chile, Pinochet really improved their standard of living.  Many Germans, for a while at least, had better lives under Hitler than under the prior regime. He really got that economy moving. There are a lot of awful dictators that, for a time, really improved things for parts of the populace. Yes, for some in Russia they are having better lives (and it will last for a short while until competition and the depletion of their oil and gas reserves ruins their economy which is overdependent on its exports of those resources). Does that justify things like political imprisonment and assassination?

This is what I think of as a "reefing question". In sailing there's a saying that if find yourself thinking "Should I reef?"(shorten sail because the wind is getting too high), the answer is yes, you should reef. If you ask yourself "is dictator X really such a bad guy for country Y", I think the answer is, by nature of the question needing to be asked, yes.

It was just an observation, but if baiting anyone was my goal, I managed to get you to white knight for the white knight.  So there's that.

I'm inclined to think all heads of state are glorified criminals, but by calling him a dictator you're begging the question in the technical sense.

OK.  Try this :  Russia with a ex-KGB agent is far better off with their dictator for life than the US is with Bush 3.

This is the guy the right-wing pundits spent the last two weeks slobbering over.

[T]he world knows that Vladimir Putin is the one who really deserves that Nobel Peace Prize. - Kathleen Troia "K.T." McFarland, Fox News National Security Analyst

Russian President Putin Deserves Nobel Peace Prize - Michael Collins, American Free Press

[Putin] has done an amazing job of showing how to lead. - Donald Trump

There has been a stampede on the far right to kiss Putin's feet. It's sickening, it's un-American, and it's very revealing.

Serious question: Is Russia still a democracy, or is it just falling apart in front of us?

Granted, FDR had 4 terms, but was cut short with his death.
