Was she able to redeem the cap for a prize at least?

2013-09-19 02:57:15 PM
The caps are part of a promotion run by the company, displaying a random English word, followed by a random French word.  "Retard" in French means late or delayed.

Non-story.

Oh my god that's awesome.

Yes, but somebody was OFFENDED. This means SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. The grist mill of hurt feelings must be fed. Preferably with cash and fired workers.

So many millions of dollars do the customers think their butthurt makes them entitled to? I didn't see it in the article.

My Mustang is pinging on regular gas so I have to developmentally-challenge my ignition timing.

Coca-Cola: "We would like to apologize to Mrs. Loates and all the other retards who were offended by this bottle cap."

2013-09-19 03:02:28 PM
That's a really stupid mistake for a company of that size, but reading the explanation, that's all it is... a mistake. No harm was intended, and they apologized. Hopefully they give these people a years supply of vitamin water or whatever, but basically it's a non-story.

Pfft, stupid Coke. Everyone knows the politically correct term is r-tard. You drop the e, and everything's cool.

A nonstory, to be sure. But still, it seems like an awfully odd promotion to me. What's the promotional value of a pair of words with no apparent context?

2013-09-19 03:03:21 PM
"We were both pretty shocked," she said.

Really? Because I would have had a good chuckle about it.
Now have a coke and a smile and shut the fark up.

News stories of them calling Canadians retards. That's sure to sell a few cases.

"I work with retards"
'Isn't that a little politically incorrect?'
"To hell with that.  No ones going to tell me who I can and can't work with right?"

2013-09-19 03:10:41 PM
Well yea, French is an obvious insult to people, so off with Coca-Colas heads!

/Wake me up when she gets Alberta Tar Sands cancer from drinking, supposedly treated, river water.

2013-09-19 03:12:16 PM
I'm surprised.  You'd think someone that willingly drinks Vitamin Water would be used to being called retarded by now.

If only Coca Cola had been less  nubianrdly with their selection of words...

Well.  She is drinking Vitamin Water.

It means the same in English.

Yes. Let's pay through the nose instead of drinking the stuff for free and eating some fruit or retards. Lot of vitamins in retards.

NOPE

The process of matching the English and French words is supposed to be completely random, according to Denny, and the chances of those two words being paired together was slim.

I'm not sure I understand this line of reasoning.   Like... "My Retard" or "Go Retard" or "Hello Retard" would have been better?   I have to agree with some, it seems like a pointless promotion, but if you are going to go with it, don't just say "lets link it up to an english and french dictionary and display whatever randomly comes out".

I don't know that it is a "non story" though... the story is that even (or maybe especially in) large multi-national corporations, a rogue office or subsidiary can come up with some stupid idea, run with it, and put egg on your entire companies face.

"The R-word is just something we don't say in my family," said Loates. "My dad is quite upset and is on a rampage."

Well, "rampage" starts with R.

"I am astonished that a major corporation could allow someone to tarnish their brand," he said. "Not everyone in Canada speaks French - like my daughter, Blake."

Is Blake the retarded one?  That might explain why she doesn't know French.

2013-09-19 04:52:47 PM
What kind of retard doesn't understand that words can have more than one meaning?

2013-09-19 05:08:09 PM
I like how they don't dispute the allegation. They don't say "Hey, now! I'm not a damned retard!" like they would if it weren't true. They just point out that pointing out that they're retarded is offensive.

Bonus points if you can correctly identify the number of retard(s) in that picture.

None. I guess it's just something they decided to do with the under-cap printer between contests, because they don't even openly promote it.  It's like an Easter egg to get you to go to their webpage.
why are there words under the cap of my glacéau vitaminwater®? what does it mean?nice catch! we love a little word play and all the brilliant combinations different words have to offer so we placed randomly selected words (top in english and the bottom word in french - different words, not a translation!) under each cap. check out our labels for a little inspiration and let us know what kind of fun you come up with!

2013-09-19 05:31:14 PM
Coca-Cola's only mistake was not acting to prevent something like this by implementing safeguards against certain combinations of words on the same cap, as sooner or later someone will take offense and make a big stink.

2013-09-19 05:46:17 PM
Is she angry that Coca-Cola didn't use the more formal "vous" form?

Yeah, I've already seen this making the rounds on Facebook. I'm not even going to waste the time to type out what the story REALLY is. They can go on being offended. It's what they live for.
