But did it help him buy a house, and is said house terrific?

2013-09-19 02:45:25 PM
All it took was seeing a preview to know there would be no whelming for me.

2013-09-19 03:04:39 PM
I imagine the pitch meeting for that movie must have been "It's Men in Black, but with dead people!" At least that's what I got from the trailers.

I didn't laugh at any of the jokes in RIPD, but I did laugh at some scene with Bridges, Parker and Reynolds where it looked like Bridges was the only one trying. The other two had zero facial expressions. Reynolds constantly looks like he doesn't realize the camera is rolling and he has this constant nervous blank stare as he silently tries to hype himself up to deliver his lines.

After watching him in The Conteder, Jeff Bridges can do no wrong in my book

That and it used the same "hip" music Microsoft was using to help promote their latest bomb, Surface.

As were the five people not related to any of the cast or crew who saw it, Mr. Bridges.

So underwhelmed he took the role and cashed the check.

B.L.Z. Bub: So underwhelmed he took the role and cashed the check.

What ends up on the screen, especially in CG effects heavy movies, is sometimes hard the gauge from a script.  The script and potentially storyboards could be light years different from ultimately ends up on the screen.

I'm not saying he wasn't just cashing in, but generally actors get paid to act.  The the editors, producers, directors, and studio execs dictate what actually comes out on screen.

Underwhelmed? That's my review of the film alongside "Dreck."

He said basically the same thing about Lebowski. If RIPD turns into a cult classic on DVD, look for Mr. Bridges to appear at RIPD conventions.

/did not see this stinker.

More people should revisit Fat Cityparticularly for Susan Tyrell's over the top portrayal of the boozy hard-luck floozie.  It's like a feel-bad Rocky and one of my favorite box office flops.

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

2013-09-19 03:38:30 PM
I've always said that bad movies are more a product of bad directing and editing than they are bad acting. This is a perfect example of that, the actors thought it would be a good movie then when they see it all strung together it's crap.

2013-09-19 03:38:39 PM
And I was underwhelmed by his performance. It's a surprise that they had any scenery left to shoot the film, after he got finished chewing all of it.

wow I had not seen the numbers for this one 68 m grossed worldwide 130m production.

I always wonder where the hell the production budget gets spent, just a budget breakdown by actor, writer, director, licensing costs, advertising, fx etc)/

Jon Stewart said the other night how much he lies to guests promoting a crappy product, he was kidding but he was "kidding on the square", I need to go back and watch his interview with Bridges while promoting RIPD to see if it was obvious at the time.

When I saw a commercial for this movie, I was completely certain that someone though up the title, though it was clever, and managed to get a studio to greenlight it solely based on that title. I continue to believe this, too.

It is the epitome of a high concept elevator pitch. I saw it and "MIB meets Ghostbusters" is the exact description I'd use.

Actually I consider it overwhelming Dreck.

Saw it with the wife when we mis-timed getting into Pacific Rim Imax 3D.

We went back and caught the late show of Pacific Rim.  Had to get the taste of RIPD out of our mouths.

Yep, me and some very stoned buddies watched that crapfestival the other day, and, even through the legally drug-induced haze, it was still terrible.

Ryan Reynolds can't act.

And Jeff Bridges' character was just over-the-top silly.

Why Mary Louise Parker even signed-on for a role this small was mystifying as well.

And the script.....

Wow.

I don't think it's good form to talk shiat about a movie you starred in. Other people worked on the film and need future jobs too. You don't have to cheer-lead for it but just get stoned, cash your residuals for all the  Lebowski t-shirts sold at Hot Topic and STFU.

Yes, because never mind how good a movie is, just make sure you stupid proles pay money in the theaters to watch because jobs and stuff.

I like it when actors and actress call their own films crap.  It's not done often enough.  Way too often they are promoting the films like crazy, like good little corporate whores.

2013-09-19 08:32:18 PM
I liked it. Sure, it was totally a starsky and hutch meets ghostbusters meets dead like me, but it was funny.
I really liked the effects in the beginning part of the film as well, right after the other guy dies.

If the movie is shiat, there's nothing wrong with saying it's shiat. You are right that other people need future jobs too, but they worked on shiat. And if it really sucked, maybe they shouldn't be working on future projects.

And I'm pretty sure admitting it was shiat is a better move than trying to act all indignant and defend the movie to people who obviously think the opposite. Or you could always argue that you were the lighting guy and the lighting was actually great for the movie, even if the script and performances sucked.
