Why?  Is a building going to suddenly jump out in front of them and they won't have the reaction time to miss it?

The 54-year-old man, who is believed to be a pilot with Pakistan International Airlines, was arrested on Wednesday night.

The national airline of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It's a safe bet that a majority of the pilots are, but there are probably a few non-Muslim pilots.

Don't kid yourself.  There are plenty of Muslims who take the prohibition on drinking as seriously as Catholics do the prohibition on contraception.

All I'm saying is that, unless there's an article that actually claims he's a Muslim, it's not fair to assume so.

Um yeah, about that.  Not all musilms believe that the prohibition is against all forms or alcohol, but only against some.  And for those people mead is not prohibited by the quran.

Or Jews with the prohibition on mixing meat and dairy. Or Christians with the mixing of fabrics.

In a perfect world, we'd follow all the rules of our religion. Of course, in a perfect world, religion wouldn't dictate everything we do.

2013-09-19 02:35:25 PM
Yeah, because Muslims aren't ever as hypocritical as other religions.

Just like jews never eat non-kosher meat or don't keep the sabbath, Catholics never rape altar boys, Christians never do the exact opposite of what Jesus Christ preached, etc.

Alcohol culture in Muslim countries is pretty awesome, from what my friends say. They have speakeasies in Islamic nations in a similar way we did during the 1920's. They hide booze in the walls, they hide it under the counter, in supply closets, and the fact they could get busted and get their skulls cracked by the government at any moment makes drinking with their friends even more fun. Not to mention they have moonshine perfected to an art.

It's not that far-fetched in a country where 98% of the population is Muslim. It's certainly less far-fetched than to assume that he's not a Muslim because he drinks...

97% of Pakistanis are Muslims. I think I'm going to take those odds.

Subby here.
Yes, you're right that the article doesn't explicitly state that it was a muslim pilot, but as he flies for the national airline of Pakistan (97% muslim, as has been pointed out), I figured it was a fair bet. Plus, if I didn't make that assumption, the headline wouldn't have worked ;)

On a side note, that PIA flight into Leeds-Bradford is about the biggest plane to land there. I have flown in on other airlines just after it has arrived from Islamabad, and the airport can barely cope with the volume of passengers and money. Smart move getting that direct flight set up, IMHO.

When I was in Iraq, we started out in a heavily Christian neighborhood. The locals knew we couldn't drink, and they thought it was flat-out hilarious to offer us booze.

It wasn't hard to turn down, though. When it's 115 outside, the thought of neat Ballentine's scotch does nothing for me.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: " At about 10pm police were called to Leeds Bradford International Airport where they arrested an airline pilot on suspicion of carrying out an activity ancillary to an aviation function while impaired by drink.

hey--i'm a pilot and i would love to know what is an activity ancillary to an aviation function is----the only thing i can come up with is doing something with the flight attendant.

any ideas?????
