Ah, happy memories -- of being five years old, swinging on the swingset in the backyard, and singing the "Batman" theme.  Happy Birthday, Mr. West!

Gawd!  What a cool and weird life!  I wonder how many young Family Guy fans even know that Adam West played Batman?  I enjoy Family Guy as much as the next farker but the Mayor Adam West bits are still funny even after the 111th viewing.  The whole Adam West at the fair sketch still makes me chuckle thinking about it.  He weighs next to nothing as he's 89% helium.  WTF?   Why would you even let a Family Guy writer write that and then agree to say that line?

I kind of wonder how Seth McFarlane(?) approached Adam West and Patrick Stewart about having recurring roles in Family Guy and American Dad and why did they agree?  Stewarts such a talented actor and the lines he delivers as CIA director Avery Bullock are the best.  The fight scene between Stewart and the koala is just...out there man?

Patrick Stewart probably still makes bank from all the Star Trek re-runs but I can't imagine West making that much money so maybe that's why he agreed to do Family Guy as himself.  Seeing the actor who played Flash Gordon make a cameo appearence in the movie Ted put me into hysterics. I loved Flash Gordon as a kid even though it's one of the cheesiest and worst movies ever but gawd it's great!

I would imagine American Dad requires a lot less effort than projects Patrick Stewart is usually involved with - it's probably like a working vacation for him. Plus he remains fresh in the public's eye (and a steady paycheck from a major network show helps bridge the gaps between royalty checks and X-Men movie appearances.)

I thought Adam West  & Max Gail as gay lovers was great on "The Drew Carey" show.

I've always said that Adam West would have made a great Batman even if he'd played the role straight:

Before Batman, he was mostly known for playing villains, as he did on an episode of THE BIG VALLEY, where
he played a US Cavalry officer with a penchant for brutalizing prostitues and branding them with his
cigar.  I remember it vividly:  I was very young and saw Batman on screen, and was very soon horrified to see
what he was doing to those poor women.

Happy birthday to him in any case.

(Doing this from memory, all the way back from '89, to the tune of "Wild Wild West" by the Escape Club:)

The Penguin and his ten goons are plotting in a back room
Pow! Crash! Boom! Bam! In leaps the Batman
Makin' life safe again for all the Gotham citizens
He's so biatchin', he's so brave, it's back to the Batcave

He's got cool and savoir faire
In his cape and cowl and his grey underwear
Who is the hero that we like best
Gotta be the Batman, gotta be Adam West
Adam West

I always cheer, I always squeal, when he cries out: "To the Batmobile!"
Commissioner's on the Batphone talkin' to the duo
Joker has escaped again, there's much to learn
Gotta rev it up, rev it up, emergency Bat turn

Each bad guy he always gets
How does he stay dry, he never sweats
Which antiperspirant does he like best
Gotta ask the Batman, gotta ask Adam West
Adam West

You can have your Mr. Spock, you can have your Superman
You can have your Ronald Reagan, you can be an Elvis fan
Sure they're heroic, sure they astound
But they can't hold a candle to the Battest guy around

You see him at conventions and shopping malls
Meeting all his fans, he's sure got.... guts
I comb the TV Guide for Batman's best
Tuning in to Batman, tuning in to Adam West
Adam West, Adam West, Adam West

I'll get myself a Batsuit, then I'll be lookin' real cute
I'll somersault all over town, I'll find Catwoman, we'll get down
I'll build my arms, I'll pad my chest so I can look like Adam West
He'll be the hero of the nation for a zillion generations

He's got cool and savoir faire
In his cape and cowl and his grey underwear
Who is the hero that we like best
Gotta be the Batman, gotta be Adam West
Adam West, Adam West, Adam West

He's wrestled giant clams, he's been almost barbecued
But he always gets away just when you thought he was screwed
He's beaten up the Joker, the Riddler and the others
But now his greatest foes are the folks at Warner Brothers

"Will their big budget blockbuster be a Bat bomb?
Will Batfans care that Batman is also Mr. Mom?
Tune in tomorrow to learn the rest!"
Cos I'll be watchin' Batman, Batman starring Adam West
Adam West, Adam West, Adam West
"Naturally you didn't know I was wearing my special super thermal-B long underwear."

Honestly, it would surprise me if adam west didn't sign on just for a laugh. You have to think a man that played the most corny version of batman in the 60s has a sense of humor about acting weird. Or, he could just be slightly senile.

Met him a few years back when he was signing autographs, promoting Batman reruns on TV Land. He's utterly clued in to his place in the pop culture firmament, and tickled to be there.

85? That's a damn good 85!

I just think West is pretty cool and has had an interesting life!  For a guy from the baby boom generation he does seem to understand the zeitgeist(?) of Gen X/Y humor.  If I get to be 85 years old I hope I look as good and still have a sense of humor like West!

Last year Adam West had a star dedication on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Ralph Garmin & Seth MacFarlane were there to give introductions.

It was Ralph that pushed really hard to get the star for Adam using the morning show on KROQ as a platform, but for all the ego and dickishness that MacFarlane exudes in just about every interview and on-screen appearance, none of it was present.  Both had some really kind and genuine words to say about the guy, and how he was such an inspiration to them both.  Standing a few feet away, you could really see that they meant it.

When I was a kid (like many boys my age), Batman West was a hero.  I met him a few times as a kid at auto and boat shows over the years, and a couple of times at Comicon, and he always seemed like a stand up guy.

One day a couple of years ago I responded to a bizarre post he made about a crockpot recipe on Facebook, and was shocked to get a personal reply from him.  Since then, I've been quietly exchanging recipes and e-mails with the guy.  He has a great personality, and he's really a genuine article.  He sent me a note to tell me about the dedication, and asked to meet me if I could make it.  It may have been 35 years later, but let me tell you that receiving a personal request from your childhood hero to meet you at any age is just about the coolest thing in the world.

Sometimes people can cut through the veil of celebrity and coax out the real people inside, and Adam seems to be able to do that with a lot of people.

Happy birthday, Mr. West - you'll always be the greatest Batman

The original was in '88.  Wally Wingert's parody came out the following year.

I met Adam West in 1994 at a signing. A class act all the way.
