That's not going to happen any time soon.

Twitter lit up Tuesday night after Manspeaker rebutted attacks from opponents who claimed that the ordinance goes against the Founding Fathers, who they said wanted a Christian nation. Manspeaker told the group that the "Bible is not our Constitution" and that the Founding Fathers were largely deists.

Mind = Blown

So this is the Kansas that fought a bloody war to become a free state, years before the Civil War started.

We will all be better off when people stop caring what others sexual orientation is.

As far as the WBC goes, I find it very interesting and hilarious that the city of Topeka is publicly apologizing for them to other communities. I was was sooooooo hoping they would picket the Newtown funerals. It would have been all over for them.

I am convinced at this point that people truly enjoy them, or at least enjoy endlessly discussing them.
So please continue to glamorize these boring and stupid people!

The ordinance was sponsored by City Councilman Chad Manspeaker (D), whose district includes Westboro.

Newest entry in the "Manliest Names Ever" list?

I wouldn't be surprised if some "concerned citizen" or some "family advocacy" group files a court case with the Court of Appeals or the State Supreme Court and claims the ordinance is unconstitutional for some reason or another.  And then the Court says it's unconstitutional.

2013-09-19 09:18:05 AM
Manspeaker said it was important for the city to send the message that Topeka was "an inclusive community and a community that cares." He stressed that while he did not propose the ordinance based solely on Westboro Baptist Church's presence in Topeka, he did want to send a message to the world that the church does not define the city.

Because when I think "inclusive community", the first city that comes to mind is Topeka.

Funny, I thought it sounded like what some b-grade Hollywood scriptwriter, thinking himself witty, would pick for the character that advocates for pro-gay legislation.

I don't think South Park qualifies as obscure, in any sense of the word.

My thought was a gay porn star.

In all seriousness though, good on him. Especially for that "Bible is not in the Constitution" bit.

Good for the City Council!  As a Christian, these WBC freaks offend me.  They know nothing about the Bible or even the basic tenants of human kindness at all!  People really need to learn how to:

1. Mind their own business.
2. Be kinder and help one another.
3. Stop trying to tear your fellow man/woman apart.
4. Live and let live.  Freedom and equality is for all, or it is for no one.

I'd say every male is a manspeaker.  All it takes is for a person of your chosen sexual preference to, "blow into the microphone," and the man it's attached to will make some noise!

Noticeably F.A.T.: That wouldn't be a good thing.

Aside from unifying people in hatred of them. What does the WBC do to benefit society?

They harass the grieving, they promote fanatical intolerance, and create reams of paperwork that clog up courts. While we are a society of tolerance, we are not a society of acceptance.

We do not have to accept assholes like the WBC in our society. We already have 8 Billion assholes on the planet. Who's going to miss a single bloodline that does nothing but cause problems.

/If I saw someone gun down the WBC, I would for some strange reason be unable to identify the shooter.
//Because I care that little about such a crime being solved.
///Someone would have to be arrested and charged for such a crime though, and it would suck to be them.

They do provide a valuable benefit to society. They show how silly homophobia in general is. The backlash against them may be one reason why attitudes have changed so drastically so quickly, with the majority now in favor of same-sex marriage, for the first time ever.

It's quite possible that they're doing this on purpose, that that was their goal all along, to make themselves hated for that very reason. Phelps is a life-long Democrat.

I began to suspect this when his daughter was being interviewed on some TV news show, and a hacker from Anonymous called in and said that he could deface their website while she was on the phone with him. She said that she was sure her site's security was good enough to block such easy hacking. He did it. And then she smiled. She tried not to, but she did. You could tell she was trying to suppress it, and could not.

Why? The usual claim that they're only in it for the lawsuits wouldn't hold up here, since she would be on nationally broadcast video record of having challenged the hacker to deface their site, so a vandalism lawsuit would likely get tossed, and being an attorney in a family of attorneys, she'd know that.

So what else could be the explanation for her trying and failing to suppress smiling at the hacker's success?

I think WBC knows that eventually Phelps is going to come out of the closet so they're trying to make things tougher on him as payback for being a general monster even beyond the self-hating homo-rage.

/He'll be like 110, but still. Little victories.

As fun as that idea would be (and who knows about the kids, as you note), it's going to be hard to explain away Addicted To Hate as some sort of loki-troll.

Also, A bi-sexual Catholic?

LOL

Actually that is quite fitting, he can have sex with men, ask for forgiveness, repeat.
