"(Putin) is not enhancing Russia's global reputation. He is destroying it. He has made her a friend to tyrants and an enemy to the oppressed, and untrusted by nations that seek to build a safer, more peaceful and prosperous world," wrote the senior senator from Arizona, who is also a leading Republican voice on military affairs.

Is it just me, or is McCain a really bad writer for a U.S. Senator?

He also wasn't a very good pilot in the navy...

John McCain is a senile old fool.  I have written him a letter requesting his resignation and informing him of my intent to vote against him in any upcoming election.

Not quite. 25 years in my past, but it takes the ending because it is the object of the transitive verb. It is being shouted at. And I believe the ending is the peculiar version of the genitive case, which would normally be "a"

But as I say, it was part of a Soviet Studies dgeree when there was still a Soviet Union.

2013-09-19 10:53:40 AM
I was wrong.

Looked it up. Object of a transitive verb is accusitive case and the ending is "a"

I stand corrected.

Yeah you're right it's accusative and not prepositional.

But it's a neuter noun so it's o not a.

That's great. You should now follow it up with an angry letter to the New York Times.

Grammar Communists?  well. uh...

Anyway.  FTFA:  "(Putin) is not enhancing Russia's global reputation. He is destroying it. He has made her a friend to tyrants and an enemy to the oppressed, and untrusted by nations that seek to build a safer, more peaceful and prosperous world," wrote the senior senator from Arizona, who is also a leading Republican voice on military affairs.

One could argue we don't really have a lot of credibility here after things like Iraq.  But, then again, it's just what powerful nations do.  Try to bend other, smaller nations to their will and form blocs that will help consolidate that power.

A Plea for Caution From Russia
What Putin Has to Say to Americans About Syria

That is a well-written piece, and I agree with a lot of what he wrote.

He's still an oppressive tyrant, though.

People still think dumping this whole lose/lose mess in Putin's lap is a bad idea. Let everyone hate Russia for a change.

Yeah, when you're yelling at a cloud it's на облако. На облаке would mean the old man is yelling on a cloud.
("People named Romanes they go, the house?"). Case endings can really screw up the meaning.

What's funniest about all this is that obviously McCain thinks:

1) That the newspaper Pravda is still relevant (hasn't been for at least 20 years) and
2) That pravda.ru is related to the newspaper (it's not, as TFA states).

So McCain or one of his flunkies thinks that he's answering in the Russian equivalent of the NY Times, but he's really answering in the equivalent of Daily Kos or Huffington Post...

Had to look this one up:

Что есть, то было, будет ввек.
И прежде кровь лилась рекою,
И прежде плакал человек...

Yeah, McCain's choice of Pravda.ru shows very clearly just how out of touch he is.

Then again, maybe they were the only Russian news outlet that would take him.

Or maybe this message isn't really meant for the Russians but for the Americans, and McCain is counting on Americans being just as behind-the-times as he is.
