The Patron Citronage is kinda nice for orange liqueur or whatever, but I find triple sec to be just fine, so long as you get one of the higher alcohol ones.  I got a bottle of triple sec that was only 15% ABV once.    ICAN'T STAND low ABV triple sec, it's FARtoo sweet.

I like GOOD sangria.

Like any other drink or dish, there's a few ways to make it right, and an infinite number of ways to make it not so good, or, in a really bad joint, something like KoolAid and booze.

Last time I got really, really drunk, it was on sangria and vodak gummy bears.

Sangria =  bad wine you would normally drink on it's ownwith lots of sugar added =  bad headache,  will stick to good wine thanks

I like chilled white wine...but if you're planning to drink it for an entire afternoon and into the night, you start to wish it carried about the same punch as a decent beer. But I hate cutting it with sweet or fruity shiat.

Recently, I discovered mixing chardonnay and Trader Joe's sparkling water w/ just a twist of orange flavor. 50/50 mix. You end up with 6 or 6.5% alcohol content, great taste, cool and refreshing temperature, quick and easy to do, and with none of the fruity sweetness of sangria.

Try it.

Sangria is pretty much just MD 20/20 poured in a glass with a scoop of fruit salad.

The thing about sangria - and this is from someone who's only recently developed a taste for wine - is that there's a difference between sangria and wine with fruit in it.

I have a friend who has become the designated sangria maker at our group parties, and she's become devastatingly good at it. Devastating to the liver, anyway. I'm not sure if she uses brandy, but she'll mix a couple different wines with the usual complement of fruits. The last couple parties, she's brought along a jug of white and a jug of red. It'll be gone in ninety minutes.

When I was up in Montreal a few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I were indulging in sangria (neither of us are particularly notable drinkers), and had delicious sangria at a chain Italian place called Mikes. It was sweet, tasty, and I could still walk home after two glasses. I actually had to wonder afterwards if it was actually sangria, or just slightly-alcoholic fruit juice.

Sangria is the past.

Singria is the present.

I really did love Sangria back around when I was in college, in the mid-1970's.  I always ordered it on dates because it was a reliable panty remover. But I grew up and realized it was really paint remover.

I can't have it in the house, it goes too *hic* quickly.

I love a good sangria. There's a tapas place near me that has $1 sangrias on Mondays. That is a dangerous night, but so worth it.

Real sangria? Sure. The stuff they make at restaurants by watering down with with 7-Up? Not so much.

Maybe someone who is more knowledged with booze can chime in on this. When I visited Spain I had tapas and sangria in a bar. The sangria I was served there was nothing at all like the sangria here in the states. Here it's very sweet. In that bar in Spain it was... a little bitter? I don't quite remember but it was a lot different than what people call sangria here. It was stronger and still good, but much different tasting.

I used to have a friend who didn't drink much.

Wait, no, there's more to that sentence. ...and once when we were out at a restaurant she ordered "Whatever you have that tastes the most like grape Kool-Aid." They brought her a strawberry margarita with a sangria swirl. She was plastered after about half of it, so the rest of us tried to finish it off. Holy shiat, was it vile--and exactly like a super alcoholic grape Kool-Aid. Between ten of us we couldn't finish the other half.

There is nothing better on a hot day than a pitcher full of Sangria, loaded with all sorts of fruit, and served very chilled. It is the only kind of red wine that I really like.

Yes, I know. I will never make a wine snob. I don't like hoppy beer either.

No.  No, you aren't.  Those things (aw, hell, I just remembered the watermelon/strawberry ones *drool*) were DAMN tasty.

/You had to pour them into an empty "Big Gulp" cup to keep from catching sh** at the football game though...

My favorite was to drain em to the middle of the label and then refill with vodak, anyone who gave me shiat about drinking girly drinks was challenged to finish the bottle =)

Bob_Laublaw: Gonz: Canton: I've never tried sangria, and I'm curious. What level migraine would I be tempting? (As a baseline, one glass of Riesling is a slight risk...)

Not knowing you personally, I'd suggest caution. There are a lot of variables at play, including the types of fruit used, and whether there's added sugar and/or brandy.

Yup, and if a light white is putting you into headache territory, it's likely best to avoid it. Unless you're masochistic, then have three or four mugs.

Not a masochist. A light white, or a bottle of hard cider, is an acceptable risk. (Imitrex is my insurance. Note to self: Get that prescription refilled.) But... yeah. Caution is the name of the game. Tasty is good, but pain is not.

Thus, I remain sober.

Been thinking about making some Sangria.

Best recipe I've ever tried:

2 bottles Rioja
2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice
1/2 cup triple sec
1/2 cup brandy

Combine in pitcher and add cubed a orange, lemon, and apple, (or whatever you want really). Toss in the fridge for a few hours.

Pour into glass over ice, scoop a couple fruit cubes in to the glass and add a spritz of seltzer to taste.

Port or Sangria are the only 2 wines I can stomach. Well, Old Duke too, but that was back in the mid/late 70s and I don't know if it's even made anymore.

Give it a go if you find some.  It becoming more common and, while it started in Germany (hence the spelling), "ice wine" is now being made by American vineyards.
