Greatest ruse ever perpetrated by the republican party is to convinced the white, lower working class, that they are the "ones paying all the taxes" and that they should therefore support tax cuts for the top 1%.  Even though those tax cuts have absolutely nothing to do with them.

Actually it does.  Every time taxes are cut for the wealthy or corporations, the remaining taxpayers must pick up the slack.  Someone has to pay the bills for trillion dollar wars which achieve nothing but regional chaos!

Only 8.4%? That actually seems kind of low.

So what percentage of Americans actually are lower class? Is it a "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" thing? Because with the income disparity, I would bet that around 40% of USA citizens are low-class income people.

sure haven't: So what percentage of Americans actually are lower class? Is it a "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" thing? Because with the income disparity, I would bet that around 40% of USA citizens are low-class income people.

Income-wise it's an arbitrary definition. 20% of the country is in the lowest 20% of income. If you define low class income as being in the lowest 20 percentile, then there you go.

If we're talking class like in a Russell "Rudy, you like school in summer.........nooooo class", then I'd say about 85% of Americans are low class. Myself included.

I think it's Fitzgerald who said that the key to understanding America is that every American is a temporarily embarrassed millionaire.

I know quite a few people barely scrapping by, living off food stamps in trailer parks who consider themselves middle class.

It seems from the article that we've invented a new class, a class below even the working class. I'm sure Marx would be dismayed at the ways the peasantry find to divide themselves.

that's ok

the wealthiest 2% are richer than they've ever been and continue to get richer.   at everyone else's expense, of course.

Incontinent_dog_and_monkey_rodeo: I think it's Fitzgerald who said that the key to understanding America is that every American is a temporarily embarrassed millionaire.

It's an inaccurate quote of John Steinbeck, taken out of context.  Anyone who read his famous works shouldn't need to be told he's not a fan of unrestricted free market, but he actually used the term "embarrassed millionaires" to describe hypocritical communists who basically demonstrated against capitalism due to self-image issues than any knowledge of the system's failings.

What Americans suffer from isn't shame but a race-driven sense of entitlement.  Poor blacks think the country's against them so they should milk the system for all it's worth; poor whites think they would be wealthy if not for poor blacks milking the system for all it's worth.  Rich whites and poor whites don't relate to each other's problems or incomes; they find common ground on race and that's how the rich get the poor to eat each other.  The term that comes to mind isn't "embarrassed millionaires" but "divide and conquer".

In other words. 8.4% stopped farting & twanging their banjos long enough to look around their double-wide surroundings and declare `Sheee-it, I'z ain't royalty!'?
That is quite the epiphany.

Since, IIRC the poverty level is 15 %.... I'd say that number was off. And/or people are stupid.

Which is why the bottom 3 quintiles are paying the lowest share of taxes in 50 years... wait wut?

Just saw the recent report of median income being $51,200. My wife and I *just* cracked 60% of that number last year. We're going to make less this year.
