So the conservative citizens of Alaska will all receive their annual free government money? You betcha that's pretty boot strappy.

certainly nowhere near the record payout of $2,069 in 2008.

Wow, that's really not very much at all.  10 times that wouldn't be enough to get me considering moving up to Canada's tail.

Well since it's the same as welfare and since Republicans hate welfare maybe those checks need to stop.

The original idea was pretty small-government-friendly: with the state getting in all this money from energy production, it was better to return that money to the people than to grow the state government into a behemoth.

the trick is to buy a shack up there and put some mannequins behind the shades with some lights on a timer so people just think you live there but in reality you live in aruba year round all on that socialist communist redistributedish money.

I'm trying to think what the minimum number would be to bribe me to live in Alaska.  It's a lot more than $2000.  $50,000 might do it.

That's a lot of effort for $878 last year.

It only seems that way because you don't know the other part of the plan where you parlay that 878 dollars using the martingale system playing baccarat in an Aruban casino.

Love it there. Gonna move there in a few years. The winters where I'm heading are mild compared to the Dakotas.

2013-09-18 09:58:02 AM
I lived in Alaska for twenty years. I got tired of saying that the summers make up for the winters, because some years they didn't. Even with a stupid income tax, I'm still ahead living in Oregon.

They also have moose shelters on playgrounds and moose drills (instead of tornado drills)

I live in Montana, so I put up with a lot of the same things that Alaskans do--long, cold winters, crappy jobs, no jobs, weird, misfit people, miles to anywhere--and I don't get a check for it either. I don't begrudge them their government money at all.

/Is it worth it anyway? You bet your ass it is.

edmo: So the conservative citizens of Alaska will all receive their annual free government money? You betcha that's pretty boot strappy.

No, it's actually money that's been stolen from the hard working oil companies who have every right to all the resources underground without any regard for the people living there.

2013-09-18 10:31:06 AM
Don't Alaskans get a 2-to-1 return on the money they pay into the federal gov't when compared to spending?

Do they just think money comes out of the ground?

Well, they're not just printing it downtown. It's probably tax revenue from big mom-and-pop oil.

Not necessarily 'get', but the federal goverment spends about 2 bucks in Alaska for every dollar it gets from Alaskans.  The issue you have here is that the Federal Goverment owns more land in Alaska than the size of Texas.  Managing this land is not cheap.

When you strip out all of the 'fluff' Alaskans are pretty much on par with what they recieve.

When the states are awash in revenue, that seems to be a great way to spend it.  Conservatives or liberals shouldn't have a problem with returning some of that to the citizens.  Now if you state (or country) is deeply in debt, then you should re-think your spending and maybe tighten the belt a little bit.

I'm making well over 50k for a job that I see posted in Seattle and Portland for 32-38k, so I feel justified.

Most weeks have more IT job openings in Anchorage than Seattle proper or all of the Portland metro area

BZZT! Wrong.  Most of the taxes that are used for this state spending are generated by in-state revenues from the oil companies.

Maybe, but it depends upon the state's budget..   ND might as they have about a $3 billion state surplus this year.  If anything, you will see a reduction in the state income tax first.  Michigan has about a $10 billion dollar state deficit so they are in no position to offer any type of tax break, let alone a rebate.

Alaska's budget can handle giving the folks 'free stuff'.  They have a $2.5 Billion dollar state surplus with a population of 750K.  That is about $3500 worth of 'free stuff' per capita.
